Book excerpt: Having demonstrated the potential for aggressive activity in outer space, the author analysed available data on space weapons, concluding that the most potent and reliable devices are capable of fundamentally polluting the space environment. These findings challenge the notion of any powerful nation State being able to win a war in outer space. Every State would suffer, with the most space-reliant being worst affected. Significant reductions to the potential for space warfare might be beyond the political and strategic capacities of major States. International law is a fragile deterrent. New and different approaches are necessary. Some are identified.

Book excerpt: Astrology ascribes meaning to planetary events and assumes that the energy that moves the universe has a kind of inherent intelligence. The astrologer maintains that there is a natural resonance between the evolving motion of the universe, and the development of the human soul. For the first time, Adrian Duncan shows how to empower clients and create transformation by harnessing horoscopes. Duncan has created an innovative manual that masterfully guides astrological practitioners and interpreters through every aspect of working with clients. Going beyond astrology simply as a diagnostic tool, Astrology: Transformation & Empowerment shows how to harness perception and sensory states to create positive change in one interpretive session! Part 1 -"Setting the Scene," explains how to read the client before reading their chart. Body language, mind reading, and the elements are touched upon. Part 2 - "The Major Players," depicts specific planetary combinations and what they entail in regard to emotional responses, relationships, and the future. Part 3 - "Transformation Methods," teaches ways to expand awareness of the problem at hand, reframe the reading, expand sensory skills, and discover new communications systems. Throughout, Duncan shares profiles and vignettes of clients that demonstrate his techniques.

As humanity stands at the crossroads between a continued descent into dark materialism and the spiritual path back to the light, a great cosmic event is about to force this elemental choice. This astonishing illustrated astrological analysis shows that the present alignment of Uranus and Pluto with the Earth has set in motion a powerful Planet-Wave that will peak in 2012, heralding a period in which we face a unique opportunity to forge our destinies. Drawing a compelling analogy with quantum physics, this theory sets out the ways in which we can ride the wave by looking back into history at similar moments from the past.

Book excerpt: Made in Nusantara serves as a comprehensive introduction to the history, sociology, ethnography, and musicology of historical and contemporary popular music in maritime Southeast Asia. Each essay covers major figures, styles, and social contexts of genres of a popular nature in the Nusantara region including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and the Philippines. Through a critical investigation of specific genres and their spaces of performance, production, and consumption, the volume is organised into four thematic areas: 1) issues in Nusantara popular music; 2) history; 3) artists and genres; and 4) national vs. local industries. Written by scholars working in the region, Made in Nusantara brings local perspectives to the history and analysis of popular music and critically considers conceptualisations developed in the West, rendering it an intriguing read for students and scholars of popular and global music.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays is driven by the question of how we know what we know, and in particular how we can be certain about something even when we know it is an illusion. The contention of the book is that this age-old question has acquired a new urgency as certain trends in science, technology and ideas have taken the discussion of consciousness out of the philosophy department and deposited it in the world at large. As a consequence, a body of literature from many fields has produced its own sets of concerns and methods under the rubric of Consciousness Studies. Each contribution in this collection deals with issues and questions that lots of people have been thinking about for many years in many different contexts, things such as the nature of film, cinema, world, mind and so on. Those of us fascinated by these diverse yet related issues may have often felt we were working in a disciplinary no-man's-land. Now suddenly, it seems with Consciousness Studies we have a coherent intellectual home - albeit one that is self-consciously eclectic. The essays included in Screen Consciousness: Cinema, Mind and World are from a range of disciplines -- art, philosophy, film theory, anthropology and technology studies -- each represented by significant international figures, and each concerned with how their field is being transformed by the new discipline of Consciousness Studies. Together they attempt to reconcile the oncoming rush of new data from science and technology about how we know what we know, with the insights gained from the long view of history, philosophy and art. Each of the contributions seeks to interpose Consciousness Studies between film and mind, where for cultural theorists psychoanalysis had traditionally stood. This is more than simply updating Film Studies or nodding in the direction of cognitive film theory. Film, with all its sentient, sensuous and social qualities, is a common reference point between all these forces, and Consciousness Studies provides the intellectual impetus for this book to revisit familiar problems with fresh insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the internet and handheld or wearable media systems that plunge the user into 360o video, augmented—or virtual reality—technology is changing how stories are told and created. In this book, John V. Pavlik argues that a new form of mediated communication has emerged: experiential news. Experiential media delivers not just news stories but also news experiences, in which the consumer engages news as a participant or virtual eyewitness in immersive, multisensory, and interactive narratives. Pavlik describes and analyzes new tools and approaches that allow journalists to tell stories that go beyond text and image. He delves into developing forms such as virtual reality, haptic technologies, interactive documentaries, and drone media, presenting the principles of how to design and frame a story using these techniques. Pavlik warns that although experiential news can heighten user engagement and increase understanding, it may also fuel the transformation of fake news into artificial realities, and he discusses the standards of ethics and accuracy needed to build public trust in journalism in the age of virtual reality. Journalism in the Age of Virtual Reality offers important lessons for practitioners seeking to produce quality experiential news and those interested in the ethical considerations that experiential media raise for journalism and the public.

Book excerpt: Humankind has grappled for millennia with the fundamental questions of the origin and end of the universe--it was a focus of ancient religions and myths and of the inquiries of Aristotle, Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton. Today we are at the brink of discoveries that should soon reveal the deepest secrets of the universe. Alpha and Omega is a dispatch from the front lines of the cosmological revolution that is being waged at observatories and laboratories around the world-in Europe, in America, and even in Antarctica--where scientists are actually peering into both the cradle of the universe and its grave. Scientists--including galaxy hunters and microwave eavesdroppers, gravity theorists and atom smashers, all of whom are on the trail of dark matter, dark energy, and the growing inhabitants of the particle zoo-now know how the universe will end and are on the brink of understanding its beginning. Their findings will be among the greatest triumphs of science, even towering above the deciphering of the human genome. This is the book you need to help understand the frequent front-page headlines heralding dramatic cosmological discoveries. It makes cutting-edge science both crystal clear and wonderfully exciting.

This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE During the last fifty years of Men-Tsee-Khang since its establishment, a number of different debates were held related to medicine and astroscience and of course, a lot of new knowledge, new experience and new approach are gained in the process of the debates. In 2013, holding the International Conference on Body, Mind and Life was the first time of its kind in the history of Men-Tsee-Khang. Thus, we called the conference as the First Conference on Body Mind and Life. The conference is directly or indirectly connected to improve the general altruistic manners and mental healthcare services and also related to social stability and environmental security. Thus, we can say that this is the starting point for future healthcare works. In this conference, we invited various experts from different perspectives such as Bon scholar from the field of ancient Tibetan indigenous Astro-science of Bon Tradition on identification of body, mind and life, experts from Tibetan Buddhist perspective, healthcare professionals from Tibetan medical and astro-science, psychologists from modern science and has engaged in dialogue and exchanging views in the conference for three days. While we overview the convivial conference through its events with an evaluation, due to the different cultural background and different intellectual understanding of the subject by the respective experts, there was not yet a unified identification of body, mind and life in general and the mind in particular. However, there were some general agreements in the conference; 1) that the wellness of the body is dependent on the well being of mental health, 2) that there is a deep relationship between the body and mind, 3) that there is a need to put importance on the mental health in the present world, that the psychological explanation is the most extensive and profound in Tibetan Buddhism and 4) finally it was unanimously concluded that the cultural exchange on issues like the way of the counseling on the discovery of favourable and unfavourable conditions for better mental health, practices and realization in the individual as well as social daily life are of great significance. Above all, all the conference participants had a great audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and presented the purpose and program of the conference to His Holiness, wherein His Holiness blessed us with an insightful advice on importance of the cultural exchange and research studies. Likewise, those presentations, panel discussions and question & answer for the three day conference were manually transcribed, translated and edited and made available in both Tibetan and English by publishing in books. I earnestly look forward that these works would extensively benefit the readers in gaining more insight from these different cultures in general and better understanding of the identification, causes, conditions and interrelationship of the body, mind and life, the causes and conditions of their disorder and their remedies in particular. Book excerpt: There are thousands of highly practical and often entertaining astrology books freely available to consumers who have become familiar with the basic parameters of astrology. The authors of these books, and most other astrologers, analyze only the "ten planets"--the sun and the nine planets of our solar system. Author William Noah asserts that this simple method is insufficient because the energy of mankind is not solely captured in the planets. Noah's all-inclusive work serves as a tutorial and reference for the world of asteroids and planets. Of the thousands of asteroids in the universe, Noah has selected twenty key asteroids that are the most relevant to the events, experiences, encounters, and future possibilities of the astrology-interested public. Noah's comprehensive work includes: Charts with meaning and symbolism of zodiac signs and houses Lists of planetary symbolism and meaning Alignment of chart interpretation with the complementary astro-mythic energy characterization of triangular Grand Trine formations depicting the meaning and permanent effect for life momentum Natal charts for every president of the United States Natal charts for popular American celebrities The "Astrology of America" goes beyond analysis of the planets to prepare horoscopes by introducing preselected asteroids into the astrological mix. Noah believes his use of these asteroids, along with planetary placement, builds a framework that identifies the surest way to reach success and meaning in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into a captivating exploration of astrology within the context of the simulated multiverse hypothesis. Merging the ancient wisdom of astrology with the speculative concept of simulated realities, we embark on a thought-provoking journey to investigate the potential interplay between celestial patterns and the fabric of a simulated universe. By examining astrology as a symbolic language that seeks to decode cosmic influences, we explore the intriguing possibility of how these celestial patterns could manifest within a simulated multiverse. Drawing from astrological principles, such as planetary alignments, zodiac signs, and aspects, we delve into the hypothesis that simulated realities could incorporate programmed astrological phenomena to shape the experiences and trajectories of its simulated inhabitants. Through a nuanced analysis, this book explores the implications of astrology within a simulated multiverse framework. We investigate the hypothetical mechanisms through which celestial archetypes and energies could be simulated, considering how they might be influenced by the underlying algorithms or governing principles of the simulated reality. Furthermore, we explore the potential role of astrology within a simulated multiverse in providing a sense of meaning, purpose, and guidance to its inhabitants. By considering the possibility of programmed synchronicities and alignments, we delve into how astrology could serve as a navigational tool, aiding simulated beings in understanding their unique roles and life paths within the simulated multiverse. While acknowledging the speculative nature of both astrology and the simulated multiverse, this book aims to provoke interdisciplinary discussions and encourage further exploration into the intersection of these intriguing realms. By bridging the esoteric wisdom of astrology with the mind-bending possibilities of simulated realities, we aspire to shed new light on the potential connections between cosmic patterns and the multifaceted nature of existence within a simulated multiverse. This book presents an engaging exploration of astrology within the context of the simulated multiverse hypothesis. By contemplating the potential interactions between celestial influences and a programmed reality, we invite readers to ponder the intricate tapestry that might unfold when astrology meets the simulated multiverse, urging further inquiry into the nature of both these captivating domains.

Book excerpt: Life is a room of tables where we sit and form families, groups and societies that feed materially and spiritually on what is served at them based on the menu that the various groups have ordered ( voted for) from the political and intellectual managers and leaders. I can sit at any table I want, I am free, but at most tables the spiritual food is gone and what is presented is the psychological and emotional reckoning of pride that has denied God and His love. But right next to the brothers and sisters with anxiety and depression who do not yet know what is coming because their superiors promise not to abandon them if they obey and pay their tribute, there are tables of people who are receiving excellent and very substantial food, in abundance and with no end in sight. It is food that does not become stale, that strengthens the soul and gives life; it is the food of true abundance, the spiritual food that points to the only truth, God.
