Book excerpt: Science Fiction has always drawn some of our most creative writers to its form. Back in the early decades of the twentieth century events conspired to propel the whole genre forward from the earlier works of Jules Verne and other luminaries. New media technologies were coming to the fore with radio and television to add to new industrial processes and ideas. Hollywood's golden years were creating 'escapist fare' as the world battled with war and depression where the impossible seemed possible. On the streets pulp magazines were becoming the dominant form of mass market reading. The real world had shrunk and other worlds were sought. Writers were able to fuse ideas with technical 'know how' and create fabulous inventions of other worlds and other times. These inspired other writers to re-imagine almost everything in the search for new situations and environments. A Golden Age was upon us. These are their stories ...

This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analog Science Fiction and Fact is an American science fiction magazine. As of 2015, it is the longest running continuously published magazine of that genre, the June 2015 issue being number 1,000. Initially published in 1930 in the United States as Astounding Stories as a pulp magazine, it has undergone several name changes, primarily to Astounding Science-Fiction in 1938, and Analog Science Fact & Fiction in 1960. In November 1992, its logo changed to use the term "Fiction and Fact" rather than "Fact & Fiction." It is in the library of the International Space Station. Spanning three incarnations since 1930, this is perhaps the most influential magazine in the history of the genre. It remains a fixture of the genre today. As Astounding Science-Fiction, a new direction for both the magazine and the genre under editor John W. Campbell was established. His editorship influenced the careers of Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, and also introduced the Dianetics theories of L. Ron Hubbard in May 1950. Analog frequently publishes new authors, including then-newcomers such as Orson Scott Card and Joe Haldeman in the 1970s, Barry B. Longyear, Harry Turtledove, Timothy Zahn, Greg Bear, and Joseph H. Delaney in the 1980s, and Paul Levinson, Michael A. Burstein, and Rajnar Vajra in the 1990s. One of the major publications of what fans and historians call the Golden Age of Science Fiction and afterward, it has published much-reprinted work by such major SF authors as E. E. Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, Harlan Ellison, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, A. E. van Vogt, Lester del Rey, H. P. Lovecraft and many others.

This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing- ASTOUNDING STORIES What are "astounding" stories? Well, if you lived in Europe in 1490, and someone told you the earth was round and moved around the sun-that would have been an "astounding" story. Or if you lived in 1840, and were told that someday men a thousand miles apart would be able to talk to each other through a little wire-or without any wire at all-that would have been another. Or if, in 1900, they predicted ocean-crossing airplanes and submarines, world-girdling Zeppelins, sixty-story buildings, radio, metal that can be made to resist gravity and float in the air-these would have been other "astounding" stories. To-day, time has gone by, and all these things are commonplace. That is the only real difference between the astounding and the commonplace-Time. To-morrow, more astounding things are going to happen. Your children-or their children-are going to take a trip to the moon. They will be able to render themselves invisible-a problem that has already been partly solved. They will be able to disintegrate their bodies in New York and reintegrate them in China-and in a matter of seconds. Astounding? Indeed, yes. Impossible? Well-television would have been impossible, almost unthinkable, ten years ago. Now you will see the kind of magazine that it is our pleasure to offer you beginning with this, the first number of ASTOUNDING STORIES. It is a magazine whose stories will anticipate the super-scientific achievements of To-morrow-whose stories will not only be strictly accurate in their science but will be vividly, dramatically and thrillingly told. Already we have secured stories by some of the finest writers of fantasy in the world-men such as Ray Cummings, Murray Leinster, Captain S. P. Meek, Harl Vincent, R. F. Starzl and Victor Rousseau. So-order your next month's copy of ASTOUNDING STORIES in advance!-The Editor.

Book excerpt: Arthur C. Clarke acquired his first science fiction magazine - a copy of Astounding Stories - in 1930, when he was 13. Immediately he became an avid reader and collector: and, soon enough, a would-be-writer. The rest is history. Now, in Astounding Days, he looks back over those impressed by him, discussing their scientific howlers, and their remarkable proportion of predictive bulls-eyes - and writing of his early life and career. Written with relaxed good humour, Astounding Days is full of fascinating comment and anecdote.

Runner-up for the Hugo Best Related Book Award (2003) The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction is a lively account of the role of women and feminism in the development of American science fiction during its formative years, the mid-20th century. Beginning in 1926, with the publication of the first issue of Amazing Stories, Justine Larbalestier examines science fiction's engagement with questions of femininity, masculinity, sex and sexuality. She traces the debates over the place of women and feminism in science fiction as it emerged in stories, letters and articles in science fiction magazines and fanzines. The book culminates in the story of James Tiptree, Jr. and the eponymous Award. Tiptree was a successful science fiction writer of the 1970s who was later discovered to be a woman. Tiptree's easy acceptance by the male-dominated publishing arena of the time proved that there was no necessary difference in the way men and women wrote, but that there was a real difference in the way they were read.
