Data was drawn from the Gender & HIV Study, a longitudinal study of college students. Students completed surveys at three occasions during their first and second years of college. At Time 1 (N = 434), participants' ages ranged from 17.5 to 19.8 years (M = 18.5; SD = 0.4; 52% female). Thirty two percent identified as African American, 29% as Latino American, and 39% as European American. Study 1 examined associations between condom-related beliefs and condom use and whether relationship power and commitment moderated these associations. As predicted, most condom-related beliefs were associated with condom use. Contrary to predictions, neither power nor commitment moderated these associations. Study 2 compared emerging adults' own reasons to have sex against their perceptions of peers' motives. As predicted, students considered sexual motives that reflect specific circumstances (e.g., emotional investment with partner) in their own decision-making. In contrast, participants perceived same-sex peers' decisions to be mostly based on partner trait motives (e.g., physical appearance). Findings suggest that emerging adults perceive others' decisions as more superficial than their own. Implications for future work in emerging adults' sexuality are discussed within each paper.

Book excerpt: Emerging adulthood (ages 18-29) is theorized to be a distinct developmental period in the life course that embodies many unique experiences, including within the realms of sex and sexuality. Sexual activity among emerging adults is well documented; however, limited attention has been given to the association between developmental perceptions and endorsed motivations for sex. This study examined how perceptions of emerging adulthood status are associated with college students' (N = 1,109) endorsed motivations for sex (i.e., enhancement, intimacy, and coping), after controlling for demographic and known correlates of motivations for sex. Identity exploration, experimentation/possibilities, and negativity/instability were positively associated with enhancement motivations for sex, whereas only identity exploration was positively associated with intimacy motivations for sex. Lastly, negativity/instability was positively associated with coping motivations for sex, and self-focus and feeling "in-between" were negatively associated with coping motivations for sex. Implications for research and sexuality education for emerging adult populations are discussed.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a growing problem nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2009), there are approximately 19 million new STIs each year, and almost half are among young people ages 15 to 24. Untreated STIs are estimated to cause at least 24,000 women to become infertile each year (CDC). Students with low self-esteem, consumed more alcohol, had more sexual partners, and had more HIV risk-taking behaviors than other students (Gullette & Lyons, 2006). What is not clear from the literature is how psychological variables affect risk behaviors in a nationally representative sample. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between self-esteem, alcohol use, and sexual risk behaviors. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) database, which is a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of adolescents. The Add Health cohort has been followed into young adulthood with four in-home interviews, most recently in 2008, when the samples were aged 24-32, just emerging into adulthood and more likely to have opportunities for drinking and sexual behaviors. Wave III data for females was used (N = 2629). Analysis: Pearson bi-variate and Spearman Rank correlations were conducted for variables of interest. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between the sexual risk behaviors, alcohol use and self-esteem. A p-value less than .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Education was not related to binge drinking or self-esteem. Higher levels of self-esteem were related to higher levels of binge drinking. Sexual risk behaviors were related to self-esteem. Unlike previous studies, binge drinking was not related to sexual risk behaviors. Implications: These results will aid in the development and implementation of gender-specific interventions aimed at impacting sexual risk behavior among women.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to explore sexual-focused possible selves and strategies in a sample of undergraduate students at a large southeastern university. Sexual possible selves (SPS) address individualized expectations and fears regarding sex, along with the associated behavioral strategies used to attain or avoid these expected or feared selves. To date, there are no studies that examine the SPS of emerging adults. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the content of first year students' SPS and behavioral strategies, and by considering whether SPS vary by sex, romantic relationship (RR) status, and indicators of socioeconomic status. SPS questionnaires were collected from 282 first year students at the University of Tennessee. A content analysis of the participants' responses indicated significance of goals related to abstinence, interpersonal relationships, physical/sexual health, experimentation, reputation, risky behaviors, and rape/assault. Results further revealed that remaining abstinent was a salient focus of expected SPS, as was expected interpersonal relationship strategies, and feared physical/health SPS and strategies. Additionally, chi-square tests indicated significant associations between SPS and the participants' sex, RR status, and RR type for the categories related to abstinence, physical/sexual health, interpersonal relationships, experimentation, reputation, and rape/assault. Findings from this study have implications for understanding sex and relationship differences among emerging adults, as well as implications for sexual education programs and possible selves-based interventions prior to entering college.

Book excerpt: With 50-80% of college students reporting having hooked up, the college hookup culture is an irnpactful component of many young adults' exual and personal development. The current study compares students who are sexually active within committed relationships with those who engage primarily in the hookup culture on factors of sexual satisfaction and self-esteem. Previous research indicates that without a satisfying romantic relationship, sexual encounters may be less sexually satisfying, and as such the current study hypothesized that students engaging in the hookup culture would be less sexually satisfied than those in committed relationships. The literature demonstrates mixed findings on uncommitted sexual activity and well-being, but the current study hypothesized that students in committed relationships would have higher self-esteem than students who engage in the hookup culture. Results from the current study indicate that students who are primarily sexually active within committed relationships are significantly more sexually satisfied than those who primarily hook up. No significant difference in self-esteem was found between relationship types. Other significant and insignificant findings, limitations, implications, and arguments for further research from the current study are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship between self- esteem and high-risk sexual behaviors. This project aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in this relationship in Black females and non-Black females. Exploring self-esteem and high-risk sexual behaviors could enhance sexual health programs. A pilot survey was developed to measure high-risk behaviors, self-esteem and intentions of practicing safe sex. The survey was distributed via email to all female undergraduate students attending James Madison University during the Spring 2015 semester. SPSS was used to analyze the data collected. The participants of the study (n=268) were given scores based on their responses in the categories of risk behaviors, self-esteem and intentions. It was found that Black females have significantly higher self- esteem than their non-Black counterparts using the t-test (p=0.018). Findings of this study also suggested high-risk behavior and self-esteem have no correlation (p=0.051). High-risk behaviors and intentions to practice safe sex also had no correlation (p=- 0.014). Neither of these correlations were statistically significant and both were found using Pearson’s correlation. Of the 268 participants, only 21 were Black. In the future, a larger scale study where all races were equally represented may lead to more generalizable and significant results. Future studies on this topic should also examine the origin of high or low self-esteem.

Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior in undergraduate college students, with special reference to self-esteem and attitudes toward contraceptive efficacy. Because unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent among young adults, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship among factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior. This quantitative, correlational, and descriptive study used a questionnaire and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale to measure levels of the respondent's demographics, sexual health beliefs, knowledge, behaviors, self-esteem and contraceptive efficacy with a nonprobability sample of 76 undergraduate students at California State University, Sacramento. Overall findings showed that higher contraceptive efficacy contributes to safer sexual behaviors, but did not find correlations between self-esteem and sexual behavior. While some aspects of contraceptive efficacy were not strongly related to self-esteem, there is significance to evidence the fact that higher levels of self-esteem can assist in empowering people to stop sex, even at the risk of upsetting their partner, in favor of protecting their own health. The level of fulfillment in respondent's social life was found to correlate to contraceptive efficacy scores in this study. Additionally, higher levels of perceived sexual health knowledge of the respondents is correlated to higher levels of contraceptive efficacy. Recommendations include the need for targeted interventions to increase awareness, knowledge, and efficacy of sexual behavior among young college students; particularly to assist at-risk populations in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
