Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Euro-African Co-operation by : E.C. Djamson

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. E. C. Djamson, a distinguished Ghanaian Lawyer and Diplomat, has put political scientists and students of international law into his debt. His work is an important contribution to the literature of Afro-European co operation. He examines the history of relations between the European Economic Community and the Associated African States; he provides a thorough analysis of the international institutions and of the wider political, economic and legal problems involved in Afro-European co-operation. The author is concerned with the manner in which African sovereign states are now able to enter into relations with Europe on a basis of legal equality. He emphasizes the principles involved in the law of nations; this should comprise, not merely "civilized" law in traditional parlance, but also Mrican customary law. As Dr. Djamson puts it, "the international community can no longer afford to ignore the principles of law peculiar to the so-called Third World . . . after all the 'general principles of law recognized by civilized nations' are not at variance with the basic ideas of law andjustice as understood by the newcomers to the international scene. " At the same time, both the new states and the old, established powers must accept those obligations that derive from their being signatories to international agreement. Adherence to the principle of pacta sunt obser vanda does not violate sovereignty, but of itself gives evidence of a country's maturity and ability to co-exist with other sovereign entities. Dr.

Download or read book Arbitration and Mediation in the ACP-EU Relations written by Association for International Arbitration and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2008 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of a conference that provided an analysis of the initiatives seeking to integrate small and medium economies of the ACP (African, Caribbean, and Pacific group of nations) with the powerful forces of the greater markets, such as the European Union. Least developed nations tend to represent a vulnerable side in trade relations with greater economies, thus increasing a need to encourage the use of responsible trade practices and creating integration in a manner supporting the most vulnerable while guaranteeing the investments. Arbitration and mediation mechanisms play a decisive roll, providing an alternative to the imparity of justice administration in the different regions.

Book Synopsis Developments in EU External Relations Law by : Marise Cremona
Download or read book Developments in EU External Relations Law written by Marise Cremona and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External relations is currently among the most dynamic areas of EU law, its institutional structures profoundly affected by the Lisbon Treaty. This volume gathers leading analysts to assess core recent developments in the field, taking stock of the current law and potential developments in major policy areas. The volume opens with an assessment of a central concept at the heart of EU external relations, underpinning its international identity. Christophe Hillion analyses the legal principles which ensure coherence between different strands of the EU's external activity, and the contribution of law to the consistency of the EU's international presence. Frank Hoffmeister turns the focus outwards to the interaction between the EU and the international legal order - the legal basis for the EU's activity in shaping international law and the EU's contribution to 'state practice'. These opening chapters develop a picture of the EU's active international participation as well as the characteristic structural complexity of its external relations, and against this background the remainder of the book examines key policy areas of EU external action. Lorand Bartels analyses the relationship between trade policy and development; Markus Krajewski discusses trade in services and the link between external and internal policy issues; and Nathalie Tocci assesses the EU's contribution to conflict resolution, an important focus of the Common Foreign and Security Policy. The complex policy picture that emerges from the different goals, values and instruments across these areas is examined in the book's final chapter which focuses on the European Neighbourhood Policy, frequently proclaimed as a strategic priority for the EU. Together, the essays present a clear picture of the complex development of EU external relations, of the struggle for coherence in the increasingly active, visible and self-conscious role played by the EU as a participant in the international legal order.

Book Synopsis The Moral Economy of EU Association with Africa by : Mark Langan
Download or read book The Moral Economy of EU Association with Africa written by Mark Langan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa’s association with the European Union has long been hailed as a progressive model of North-South relations. European officials, in particular, have represented the Africa-EU ‘partnership’ as a pro-poor enterprise in which trade interests are married to development prerogatives. Applying a moral economy perspective, this book examines the tangible impact of Africa-Europe trade and development co-operation on citizens in developing countries. In so doing, it challenges liberal accounts of Europe’s normative power to enable benevolent change in the Global South and illuminates how EU discourse acts to legitimise unequal trade ties that have regressive consequences for ‘the poor’. Drawing upon the author’s own fieldwork, it assesses the difference between norms and the actual impact of EU concessions in relation to: budget support; aid for trade; private sector development (PSD); decent work. It concludes by considering the value of a moral economy approach in the assessment of free trade structures more widely. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of Africanist IPE, European studies, and more broadly international political economy, international development, and international relations.
