The courses are based on doctrine and also contain numerous tactics, techniques, and procedures that will assist staff officers in understanding and mastering their individual skills and their role in the collective process. The product is a computer-based, stand-alone, training support package to assist individual officers and noncommissioned officers in infantry brigades in learning to perform their duties as Battle Captains. The product consists of a compact disk that presents a self-paced course of instruction on the roles and responsibilities of the Battle Captain. Lessons learned from observing and evaluating unit training exercises at the combat training centers (CTCs) serve as the basis for some content. The course also contains numerous tactics, techniques, and procedures and job aids that will assist Battle Captains in understanding and mastering their individual skills and their role in the collective process. This program continues ARI's efforts to provide computer-based instruction to military personnel through the CTCs and the Force XXI Training Program. The U.S. Army Infantry School and the Joint Readiness Training Center will assist in evaluation of ways to implement this training. The Battle Captain training materials have application beyond Infantry.--P. i.

Recommendations on manual measures address the timing and scope of assessment and respondent workload. Book excerpt: Fifty-two leaders in the Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course (BNCOC) at Fort Benning, Georgia, participated in an assessment of two desk-top computer simulations used to train tactical decision making. Thirteen leaders trained with the Soldier Visualization Station (SVS) simulation, while 39 others trained with Simulation Field Exercise, or SimFX. Pre-simulation exercise measures included military and simulation experience, decision-making style, and tactical situation judgment. A questionnaire administered to leaders following simulation exercises documented their sense of personal involvement during mission execution and their perceptions of the training value of the simulations. Leaders in both groups were assessed individually for their ability to recognize and implement sound tactical decisions while serving as a squad leader of a light Infantry squad during patrol and defense missions in an urban environment. Results suggest that, in general, the use of desk-top simulations have potential value for training the tactical decisions leaders make during exercises that require greater expenditures of resources. However, the methods used to train with simulations impacted leaders' tactical decision making, their perceptions of the training value of simulations, and their ideas about what they learned from the experience.

Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of current and developing digital information systems on battalion commanders' ability to make decisions during combat operations. The All Source Analysis System (ASAS) and Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) represent current and developing digital information systems available to battalion commanders for the purpose of the study. As a precursor to the analysis, the study presents and describes naturalistic and normative decision making models. The study analyzes the objective capabilities of these systems to establish the type of information they provide. Then the study analyzes the battalion commander's information requirements for decision making. Information requirements are then re-examined in the context of the environment of combat to establish the degree of certainty information possess in combat. Having established that combat is a chaotic environment the study concludes that digital information systems do not reduce the amount of uncertainty that battalion commanders perceive when making decisions in combat. Further, the study indicates that battalion commanders use naturalistic decision models to make decisions during combat.
