Existing flammability tests for subsonic aircraft report inception of visible flame while SST's require tests reporting excessive temperature, or pressure rise as the evidence of flammability. The large number of environment variables affecting flammability prevent certain extrapolation of a fluid's hazard rating from a test procedure to actual conditions of use. Flammability is thought to be more a condition of environment than a material property.

This concern has led to the development of two fire resistant hydraulic fluids that can be directly substituted into aircraft hydraulic systems that were designed to use MIL-H-5606, i.e., MIL-H-83282 [2] and MIL-H-87257 [3], and a nonflammable hydraulic fluid, MTL-H-53119 [4], that can be used only in hydraulic systems that were designed for that fluid or in subsystems originally designed for MIL-H-5606, MIL-H-83282 or MIL-H-87257, for which re-design of the components and retrofit of the system with compatible seals, if required, would be cost effective. Another fire resistant hydraulic fluid was developed for use in commercial aircraft hydraulic systems, a phosphate ester based hydraulic fluid described by Society of Automotive Engineers document AS1241, Fire Resistant Phosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluid for Aircraft The fire resistant properties of these fire resistant and nonflammable hydraulic fluids are discussed and the flammability test methods are presented.

Book excerpt: The modification of the physical and chemical properties of various fluids developed for use as hydraulic fluids has necessitated the development or modification of tests required to evaluate the performance criteria of these fluids. The Federal Government utilized certain Federal Test Methods and ASTM flammability test procedures in fluid specification requirements to determine the relative flammability of fluids currently being developed for use as hydraulic fluids. These tests include the flash and fire points, autoignition temperature, flame propagation, high-pressure spray, and hot manifold ignition test procedures. Unfortunately, as fluid composition and applications change, new or modified tests must be developed to provide accurate assessments of the fluids' performance. This report presents the results produced by a systematic study of mist-flammability parameters that will lead to development of a standard mist-flammability test for hydraulic fluid specification purposes.
