This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Bahir Dar University (Department of Governance and Development Studies), language: English, abstract: The government of Ethiopia introduced the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Proclamation No. 299/2002 in 2002. The overall objective of this study is to critically assess the EIA proclamation (Proc. No. 299/2002) of Ethiopia. So as to critically assess the level of public participation, the adequacy and effectiveness of legally established laws in the EIA process, this study employed qualitative data analysis. This study revealed that the role of public participation in the entire EIA stages is weak. The study also identified that both the legal and institutional frameworks have remained inadequate to ensure full effectiveness of the EIA system. Moreover, this study describes the existence of weak coordination among or between federal, regional, zonal and other sectoral units. Hence, this study recommends that its effective implementation necessarily requires the involvement of the public and the issuance of more specific subsidiary instruments.

This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study will be of interest to EA practitioners in public administration; development and consultant organizations; training and educational and research institutes; and international and bilateral aid agencies. Project level EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) and, to a lesser extent, SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) for planning and other strategic level actions have been, or are being, introduced in the great majority of countries in transition (CIT). As yet, however, most of the countries have only limited experience in formulating "state of the art" EIA regulations and applying them satisfactorily. Furthermore, such experiences in CITs that do exist are not yet sufficiently well documented and widely disseminated. This report should be of considerable value in helping strengthen EA regulation and practice in the region."--BOOK JACKET.

Follow-up involves the implementation of measures taken to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts of a project and monitoring to determine their effectiveness. This paper reports on a study of the follow-up of EIA-recommended mitigation measures in the Koga irrigation and watershed management project. The study found that the monitoring of impacts and the implementation of mitigation measures are currently very poor. Public participation in the project is also very limited. Hence, unless improvements are made it is likely the sustainability of the project may be severely compromised.
