Book excerpt: Though environmental managers are increasingly turning to dam removal and alteration to mitigate the economic and environmental costs associated with their maintenance and operation, little is known about the potential environmental impacts of these management decisions as data is often not collected prior to and following implementation of changes. A biological assessment of a reach downstream of a prospective micro-hydroelectric project site was conducted in order to generate baseline data for the development of an adaptive management plan to assess the effects of small-scale hydro power projects on stream conditions. Biotic integrity of the reach downstream of the Annandale Dam (Annandale-On-Hudson, NY) and three other distinct riparian habitats along the Saw Kill were evaluated using six family-level metric indices, non-multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and indicator family analysis. Results indicated that the riparian habitats of the Saw Kill are characterized by little to no biological degradation. Multimetric index scores of the Annandale Dam were comparable to those of other good quality riparian habitats along the Saw Kill, suggesting that the presence of the dam does not substantially impair the water quality of downstream areas. Future biological assessments should focus on accounting for the effect of seasonal variation on macroinvertebrate community composition.

Book excerpt: This open access book surveys the frontier of scientific river research and provides examples to guide management towards a sustainable future of riverine ecosystems. Principal structures and functions of the biogeosphere of rivers are explained; key threats are identified, and effective solutions for restoration and mitigation are provided. Rivers are among the most threatened ecosystems of the world. They increasingly suffer from pollution, water abstraction, river channelisation and damming. Fundamental knowledge of ecosystem structure and function is necessary to understand how human acitivities interfere with natural processes and which interventions are feasible to rectify this. Modern water legislation strives for sustainable water resource management and protection of important habitats and species. However, decision makers would benefit from more profound understanding of ecosystem degradation processes and of innovative methodologies and tools for efficient mitigation and restoration. The book provides best-practice examples of sustainable river management from on-site studies, European-wide analyses and case studies from other parts of the world. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of aquatic ecology, river system functioning, conservation and restoration, to postgraduate students, to institutions involved in water management, and to water related industries.

Book excerpt: Globally, there are continuing pressures on coastal and marine environments from reclamation, dredging, oil spills, and industrial and sewage effluents. This book investigates the potential use of macrobenthos in ecological impact assessment and monitoring programmes associated with Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA). Macrobenthos inhabiting subtidal areas off the coastline of Bahrain were investigated to characterize the impacts of human activities on these assemblages, and evaluate their use in ecological impact assessment. Likewise, macrobenthos inhabiting a mudflat hosting a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the North East of England were investigated to assess the likely environmental impacts of a proposed maintenance dredging project that could potentially interfere with the conservation benefits of the SSSI. This book concluded that macrobenthic assemblages are useful tool to characterize and predict likely environmental impacts of proposed projects within the EIA framework. This book should be useful to professionals in fields of ecological and environmental studies, coastal and marine monitoring and conservation.

Book excerpt: In this study, we applied the SOM for ecological assessment using benthic macroinvertebrates in aquatic ecosystem. First, Chapter I, SOM was utilized to extract information from complex data of environmental variables and benthic macroinvertebrate communities residing in different micro-habitats. Although the sampling was carried out in a limited area, the patterns of environmental variables revealed spatial heterogeneity. The clustering of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the trained SOM was efficient in showing temporal variation and evaluating water quality according to the conditions of different micro-habitats. Consequently, local spatial heterogeneity is important in revealing dynamics of community abundance and biotic indices, especially regarding restoration processes in polluted streams. Chapter II, the samples were grouped into three main clusters corresponding to distinc EPTC assemblages in the tributary streams of the Garonne River catchment, southern France. Lower richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates were observed in the areas affected by agricultural land use, being associated with high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Nitrate (NO3) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Tolerant EPTC species were identified as controlling parameters for the changes in the assemblages collected at the agricultural-impacted sites...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition (1994) there have been rapid developments in the application of hydrology, geomorphology and ecology to stream management. In particular, growth has occurred in the areas of stream rehabilitation and the evaluation of environmental flow needs. The concept of stream health has been adopted as a way of assessing stream resources and setting management goals. Stream Hydrology: An Introduction for Ecologists Second Edition documents recent research and practice in these areas. Chapters provide information on sampling, field techniques, stream analysis, the hydrodynamics of moving water, channel form, sediment transport and commonly used statistical methods such as flow duration and flood frequency analysis. Methods are presented from engineering hydrology, fluvial geomorphology and hydraulics with examples of their biological implications. This book demonstrates how these fields are linked and utilised in modern, scientific river management. * Emphasis on applications, from collecting and analysing field measurements to using data and tools in stream management. * Updated to include new sections on environmental flows, rehabilitation, measuring stream health and stream classification. * Critical reviews of the successes and failures of implementation. * Revised and updated windows-based AQUAPAK software. This book is essential reading for 2nd/3rd year undergraduates and postgraduates of hydrology, stream ecology and fisheries science in Departments of Physical Geography, Biology, Environmental Science, Landscape Ecology, Environmental Engineering and Limnology. It would be valuable reading for professionals working in stream ecology, fisheries science and habitat management, environmental consultants and engineers.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on benthic macroinvertebrate and fish community structure are widely recognised as being very useful in cumulative assessment and issues of ecosystem health and integrity. Measurements of aquatic community structure have been made periodically within the northern Alberta river basins over the past 30 years, but these data have not been standardised or co-ordinated, nor analysed to determine their appropriateness or to assess the general state of the aquatic ecosystem. This report describes efforts to assess the nature and quality of long-term data sets measuring benthic invertebrate and fish community structure and effluent loading within the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave river drainages. Information was collated and standardised to assess the utility of applying current biomonitoring techniques to these data, and recommendations were made on the most appropriate approaches to use in a long-term cumulative effects monitoring plan.
