Book Synopsis Pollution of the North Sea by : Wim Salomons
Download or read book Pollution of the North Sea written by Wim Salomons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This preface is being written at a time of exceptional public interest in the North Sea, following media head lines on toxic algal blooms, the mass mortality of common seals, and concern over pollution levels. These headlines may suggest that pollution of the North Sea is a recent event. This is not the case. Although no data are available (methods simply did not exist), it is safe to assume that emission (both into air and water) of heavy metals already started to increase in the 19th cen tury. The growth of cities and introduction of sewer sys tems led to the discharge of raw sewage and sewage sludge. The introduction of man-made (xenobiotic) organ ic chemicals and their subsequent emission into the North Sea commenced before the second world war. The shallower and coastal areas of the North Sea receive the highest concentrations of these pollutants. Not unexpectedly, these areas - some Norwegian fjords, the Dutch coast, the German Bight - show signs of ecosystem deterioration and eutrophication. A certain percentage of the pollutants does not remain in the North Sea but is "exported" to the Atlantic. The North Sea therefore con tributes to the global input of pollutants to the world's oceans. The major part of the pollutants accumulate in the North Sea and are incorporated in the bottom sediments. Although they are "out of sight", they should not be "out of mind".

Book Synopsis Interactions at the Soil Colloid by : G.H. Bolt
Download or read book Interactions at the Soil Colloid written by G.H. Bolt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 20 years ago the emphasis in soil chemistry research switched from studies of problems related to scarcities of plant nutrients to those arising from soil pollutants. The new problems have come about because of the excessive uses of fertilizers, the inputs from farm and industrial wastes, the widespread applications of anthropogenie xenobiotic chemicals, and the deterioration of soil structure resulting from certain modern agriculture practises. The International Society of Soil Science (ISSS) recognized these problems and challenges. A provisional Working Group was set up in 1978 to focus attention on soil colloids with a view to understanding better the interactions wh ich take place at their surfaces. It was recognized that these interactions are fundamental to problems of soil fertility, as weIl as to those of soil pollution. After the group had received the official support of ISSS at its 12th International Congress in New Delhi in 1982 it set as its priority the assembling and evaluation of information, relevant to the soil and environmental sciences, concerning the composition and structure of soil colloids. Prior to that aseries of Position Papers were published in the Bulletin of the International Society of Soil Science (Vol. 61, 1981) outlining the state of knowledge about the composition and properties of soil colloids.

Book Synopsis Contaminated Sediments by : Ulrich Förstner
Download or read book Contaminated Sediments written by Ulrich Förstner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems, and they may also affect groundwater quality and agricultural products when disposed on land. Four aspects are covered reflecting the development of knowledge in particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: - the identification, surveillance, monitoring and control of sources and distribution of pollutants, - the evaluation of solid/solution relations of contaminants in surface waters, - the study of in-situ processes and mechanisms of pollutant transfer in various compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, - the assessment of the environmental impact of particle-bound contaminants, i.e. the development of sediment quality criteria. A final chapter focusses on practical aspects concerning contaminated sediments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Publication Index and Retrieval System' is designed to facilitate dissemination of the information contained in the more than 200 reports resulting from the Dredged Material Research Program (DMRP) and to foster operational applications of their findings and conclusions. Information referenced in this document is applicable to project environmental assessments, detailed design, construction, and operation and maintenance as well as evaluation under requirements of regulatory functions programs. Chapter 1 contains abstracts of the DMRP Synthesis Reports, which present summaries of findings for each of the major DMRP objectives with emphasis on the significance and application of the information. Chapters 2-9 contain abstracts for each of the detailed reports; the abstracts are identified under the major DMRP objectives. Chapter 10 contains the abstracts of the reports on the field tests and demonstration projects concerned with the effects of dredged material disposal in open water and the use of dredged material for habitat creation. The abstracts are also indexed as follows: subject, geographic location, agency/organization, and author. (Author).
Book Synopsis Handbook of Dredging Engineering by : John B. Herbich

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritative, up-to-date guide to dredging theory and practice. From selecting the right equipment, to evaluating environmental impact, to bidding on a project, Handbook of Dredging Engineering, Second Edition, is the last word on modern hydraulic dredging. Edited by John B. Herbich, with contributions by well-know experts in the field, the Handbook examines basic fluid mechanics; dredge pumps; dredging equipment; sediment; pipeline transport of solids; dredging methods; disposal and placement of dredged material; numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material placed in open water; environmental effects of dredging activities; instrumentation and automation; and project planning. This vital new edition covers major advances made over the last seven years. Three chapters are new to this edition: numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material...subaqueous capping of contaminated sediment...and removal of contaminated sediments by dredging, with illustrative case studies.
