Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide examines permanent structural techniques, or Best Management Practices (BMPs), which can be used for retrofitting the stormwater management systems in existing developed areas. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are explained to help engineering professionals select the BMP (or series of BMPs) best suited for removing pollutants from stormwater runoff at a particular location. The design factors considered include land availability, type of pollutant to be removed, groundwater levels, soil types, BMP costs, maintenance costs, and desired pollutant removal efficiency. The BMPs evaluated are ponds, alum treatment systems, constructed wetlands, sand filters, baffle boxes, inlet devices, vegetated swales, buffer strips, and infiltration/exfiltration trenches. A BMP Selection Guide, in an easy-to-use matrix format, aids in the decision-making process for BMP selections. Five design factors and five pollutant types (total suspended solids, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, heavy metals, and floating trash) are evaluated for each BMP in the matrix. BMPs presented in this guide were chosen based upon common availability, ease of maintenance, and an established track record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infiltration approach to stormwater management involves the design, construction, and operation of engineered systems that infiltrate stormwater runoff into soils. These systems, referred to as "infiltration best management practices (BMPs)," are intended to reduce the volume of stormwater runoff and associated pollutants that discharge to stormwater systems and receive waters via surface runoff. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 922: Stormwater Infiltration in the Highway Environment: Guidance Manual supports evaluation, selection, siting, design, and construction of infiltration BMPs in the highway environment. It is also intended to identify limitations on the use of infiltration and determine the need for alternative non-infiltration-based stormwater management approaches.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway infrastructure represents a substantial portion of the total impervious areas that generate runoff water. Because of long winters in congested areas that require frequent applications of de-icing materials, much of the runoff has the potential for affecting downstream water quality. However, storm water management techniques themselves have the potential for compromising the integrity of adjacent highways when they result in significant increases of water content in the soil beneath the roadway. Because of impacts and the costs associated with construction and maintenance, any storm water management system needs to be assessed before any decisions are made regarding new highway development or redevelopment. The authors consider Best Management Practices (BMPs) as they relate to the most commonly used storm water management approaches including dry ponds, wet ponds, infiltration trenches, infiltration basins, constructed wetlands, grassed swales, bioretention cells, sand filters and porous pavements. They provide a framework for considering cost of practices, negative impact on infrastructure, results from a BMP-related survey of highway design and maintenance professionals and cost-estimation formulas for each of the most commonly used storm water management approaches in urban Minnesota.

Book excerpt: Optimizing Stormwater Treatment Practices: A Handbook of Assessment and Maintenance provides the information necessary for developing and operating an effective maintenance program for stormwater treatment. The book offers instructions on how to measure the level of performance of stormwater treatment practices directly and bases proposed maintenance schedules on actual performance and historical maintenance efforts and costs. The inspection methods, which are proven in the field and have been implemented successfully, are necessary as regulatory agencies are demanding evaluations of the performance of stormwater treatment practices. The authors have developed a three-tiered approach that offers readers a standard protocol for how to determine the effectiveness of stormwater treatment practices currently in place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain the detailed information necessary to develop design guidelines for the stormwater best management practices (BMPs) included in the Virginia Department of Transportation's Stormwater Management Manual, a field program was initiated in 1991 for testing the pollutant removal efficiency of selected BMPs. This report summarizes Phase II of this endeavor. A dry detention pond that drained a small, highly impervious area and a vegetated swale that received runoff from an urban highway were examined. Manual and automatic sampling techniques were used to monitor stormwater flowing into and out of the two facilities. Pollutant removal efficiencies were determined using a mass balance method. Pollutants measured were total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and zinc. The results suggest that, if properly designed, these types of facilities can be effective tools for removing stormwater pollution from highway runoff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this manual is to gather and to synthesize the results of past documentation and research on highway stormwater runoff into a single-volume user's manual on water quality impact assessment and mitigation. The manual will be useful to highway designers and environmental professionals by presenting the available and appropriate impact prediction and mitigation tools for use during highway project planning and development activities. The development of this document had three components: a literature search on existing research results and operational findings on highway stormwater runoff that identifies existing water quality impact assessment and mitigation techniques; interviews with highway practitioners concerning the use of research results including maintenance of mitigation measures; and synthesis of the accumulated information into this single-volume, practical guidance manual. This manual is intended to be a self-contained desk reference for highway practitioners. An extensive bibliography is included, and the mathematical nomenclature is unified among the sections.
