Book excerpt: Automated floodplain modeling commonly requires Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) to represent the topography. As a raster representation of the Earth surface, changing a DEMs resolution (data cell size) has a profound impact on the floodplain delineation. Since 1995 DEM resolution has increased from 100- to 1-meter resolution. This thesis addresses how different DEM resolutions, and different DEM data sources, affect the outcome of modeled floodplain boundaries in the Camp Creek Watershed, a predominately agricultural watershed in Missouri. Two data sets are analyzed: a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) terrain model re-sampled to 1-, 3-, 5-, 10-, 15-, and 30-meter resolutions and existing United States Geological Survey (USGS) 5-, 10-, and 30-meter DEMs. The floodplain delineation process includes hydrologic modeling, hydraulic modeling, and floodplain delineation. Each process includes various input parameters and outputs. Resultant stream networks, watershed boundaries, and floodplains are examined to evaluate the effects of different resolutions. Using 3- or 5- meter LiDAR DEMs produces data that agree with the 1-m data greater than the 90th percentile. The agreement also includes the 10-m DEM data when analyses remove the floodplain modeling cumulative discrepancy effects. Similar trends were not found when using the USGS counterparts; possibly due to the use of the same underlying source material to create the DEMs. When removing the cumulative distortion effect of resolution on the entire modeling process, LiDAR DEM floodplains displayed a 1-4% increase in goodness of fit. Analyzing the results of two separate hydraulic models (HEC-RAS and CARES) finds little difference between their calculated flood surface elevations. Additionally, the thesis analyzes the data storage needs and processing time for modeling different resolutions, finding substantial savings in both as the underlying DEM resolution is decreased. The thesis begins to analyze how models are affected by input variables but many additional studies are needed. Further study of these variables is needed to determine if a single most appropriate model and DEM resolution exists, or what combination of models are appropriate for various types of automated floodplain modeling.

Book excerpt: Stream flowline delineation from high-resolution digital elevation models (HRDEMs) can be problematic due to the fine representation of terrain features as well as anthropogenic drainage structures (e.g., bridges, culverts) within the grid surface. The anthropogenic drainage structures (ADS) may create digital dams while delineating stream flowlines from HRDEMs. The study assessed the effects of ADS locations, spatial resolution (ranged from 1m to 10m), depression processing methods, and flow direction algorithms (D8, D-Infinity, and MFD-md) on hydrologic connectivity through digital dams using HRDEMs in Nebraska. The assessment was conducted based on the offset distances between modeled stream flowlines and original ADS locations using kernel density estimation (KDE) and calculated frequency of ADS samples within offset distances. Three major depression processing techniques (i.e., depression filling, stream breaching, and stream burning) were considered for this study. Finally, an automated method, constrained burning was proposed for HRDEMs which utilizes ancillary datasets to create underneath stream crossings at possible ADS locations and perform DEM reconditioning. The results suggest that coarser resolution DEMs with depression filling and breaching can produce better hydrologic connectivity through ADS compared with finer resolution DEMs with different flow direction algorithms. It was also found that stream burning with known stream crossings at ADS locations outperformed depression filling and breaching techniques for HRDEMs in terms of hydrologic connectivity. The flow direction algorithms combining with depression filling and breaching techniques do not have significant effects on the hydrologic connectivity of modeled stream flowlines. However, for stream burning methods, D8 was found as the best performing flow direction algorithm in HRDEMs with statistical significance. The stream flowlines delineated using the proposed constrained burning method from the HRDEM was found better than depression filling and breaching techniques. This method has an overall accuracy of 78.82% in detecting possible ADS locations within the study area.

Book excerpt: Riparian zones are dynamic, transitional ecosystems between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems with well defined vegetation and soil characteristics. Development of an all-encompassing definition for riparian ecotones, because of their high variability, is challenging. However, there are two primary factors that all riparian ecotones are dependent on: the watercourse and its associated floodplain. Previous approaches to riparian boundary delineation have utilized fixed width buffers, but this methodology has proven to be inadequate as it only takes the watercourse into consideration and ignores critical geomorphology, associated vegetation and soil characteristics. Our approach offers advantages over other previously used methods by utilizing: the geospatial modeling capabilities of ArcMap GIS; a better sampling technique along the water course that can distinguish the 50-year flood plain, which is the optimal hydrologic descriptor of riparian ecotones; the Soil Survey Database (SSURGO) and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) databases to distinguish contiguous areas beyond the 50-year plain; and land use/cover characteristics associated with the delineated riparian zones. The model utilizes spatial data readily available from Federal and State agencies and geospatial clearinghouses. An accuracy assessment was performed to assess the impact of varying the 50-year flood height, changing the DEM spatial resolution (1, 3, 5 and 10m), and positional inaccuracies with the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) streams layer on the boundary placement of the delineated variable width riparian ecotones area. The result of this study is a robust and automated GIS based model attached to ESRI ArcMap software to delineate and classify variable-width riparian ecotones.
