Book excerpt: Study of economic development on American Indian Reservations has been historically shallow despite the deep and wide ranging issues plaguing Indian Country. The aim of this thesis is (1) to test for education's continued significance in explaining growth across reservations within a general model of development, and then (2) to focus on the gaming industry's impact on economic development and on investment in education. Most research has focused on casinos' effects on earnings and poverty and while this thesis will address those issues, it will also examine how an expanding entertainment industry on reservations has impacted educational attainment, which has historically been a predictor of growth and shown to be significant for a diversified economy. This thesis finds that (1) education still plays an important role in explaining economic growth across reservations, and (2) while casinos have been an important source of revenue for many reservations in the past few decades, they may also be acting as a resource curse, discouraging economic diversification and educational attainment.

Book excerpt: The American Indian is known today as the poorest segment within the population of the United States. Although the Indian tribes have a land base unlike any other ethnic groups, their annual incomes are far below and their unemployment rates are far above any other group of citizens of this country. Beginning in 1967, the Economic Development Administration developed a program with special emphasis on economic development on Indian reservations and trust lands.

Book excerpt: The article presents the first major update of the international $1 a day poverty line, proposed in World Development Report 1990: Poverty for measuring absolute poverty by the standards of the world's poorest countries. In a new and more representative data set of national poverty lines, a marked economic gradient emerges only when consumption per person is above about $2.00 a day at 2005 purchasing power parity. Below this, the average poverty line is $1.25, which is proposed as the new international poverty line. The article tests the robustness of this line to alternative estimation methods and explains how it differs from the old $1 a day line.

Book excerpt: With a long history and deep connection to the Earth’s resources, indigenous peoples have an intimate understanding and ability to observe the impacts linked to climate change. Traditional ecological knowledge and tribal experience play a key role in developing future scientific solutions for adaptation to the impacts. The book explores climate-related issues for indigenous communities in the United States, including loss of traditional knowledge, forests and ecosystems, food security and traditional foods, as well as water, Arctic sea ice loss, permafrost thaw and relocation. The book also highlights how tribal communities and programs are responding to the changing environments. Fifty authors from tribal communities, academia, government agencies and NGOs contributed to the book. Previously published in Climatic Change, Volume 120, Issue 3, 2013.
