Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggregate loss in asphalt surface treatments has been a major problem in Alaska. A study completed in 1982 entitled "Performance of Bituminous Surface Treatments" recommended specification changes. Most important of these was the adoption of the McLeod design method and limiting the construction season. The project reviewed these recommendations by constructing test sections. The McLeod design method provides an excellant starting point for asphalt and aggregate spread rates. It is further recommended that the percent passing the No. 200 sieve be reduced to 0.5 percent. A survey of seal coating practices and philosophies was also made. Most states feel that surface sealing is economically desirable. Maintenance funds are normally used.

Download or read book Evaluation of Modified Single Seal Surface Treatments written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a field study of a multicourse asphalt emulsion chip seal, designated as a modified single seal. The treatment, already used in North Carolina, consists of an application of emulsion and coarse aggregate followed by another application of emulsion and a final layer of fine aggregate. Sixty sections were placed in three districts in 1986-88, totaling approximately 400 lane-km of surfacing. These sections were evaluated periodically by a team of local operations personnel and research staff. The operations personnel also provided estimates of service life. for conventional single chip seals, used for a cost-benefit analysis. The modified seals performed better and were more cost-effective than conventional surface treatments. Also, the hazard of broken windshields caused by loose aggregate was virtually eliminated on the modified seal treatments. The report includes recommendations for ensuring that the final product is of high quality. The recommendations include using a pilot vehicle, limiting the speed of construction traffic, using clean dry blot aggregate, applying the coarse aggregate not more than one stone thick, and using the proper nozzles on the asphalt distributor.

Book Synopsis State of the Art: Surface Treatments; Summary of Existing Literature by : Moreland Herrin
Download or read book State of the Art: Surface Treatments; Summary of Existing Literature written by Moreland Herrin and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pertinent information relating to surface treatment design and construction is summarized. Surface treatment as defined in this publication refers to a class of treatments that range from a very light application of liquid asphalt with fine cover aggregate to a more substantial two-shot screening seal type of construction. Good and bad performance of constructed surface treatments are discussed. A number of factors influence the performance of surface treatments. Primarily they are related to the bituminous binder or to the cover aggregate. Several known, current methods of design are discussed and the limitations of each noted. A bibliography on seal coats and surface treatments is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typical maintenance activities by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for existing asphalt pavements involving a periodic placement of a 1.5-in to 2-in layer of asphalt concrete are becoming increasingly costly. When applied at the right time, pavement preservation treatments can restore a smooth, safe driving surface while saving money on future rehabilitation costs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of three preventive maintenance treatments applied to US 301 in Sussex County, Virginia, to extend pavement life. This report documents the installation of a cape seal application of FiberMat (i.e., FiberMat with microsurfacing on top) over an existing asphalt pavement. FiberMat is designed to act as a crack-resistant membrane and incorporates two applications of polymer-modified asphalt emulsion with a layer of fiberglass strands between them. The study also included a performance comparison with more conventional VDOT surface treatment options: regular cape seal (chip seal with microsurfacing), and microsurfacing without a chip seal. Three years after the treatment application, a visual survey complemented by automated distress data from VDOT’s Pavement Management System showed that the section with FiberMat and microsurfacing performed well with very little reflective cracking. The chip seal with microsurfacing (i.e., regular cape seal) also performed well, but reflective cracking was higher compared to the fiber-reinforced section. The control section (microsurfacing only) showed extensive cracking after 3 years. This study showed that pavement preservation activities such as the use of fiber-reinforced chip seal with microsurfacing and modified single seal with microsurfacing improved both the pavement condition and the surface characteristics in a very cost-effective manner. Based on this study, the unit cost of fiber-reinforced cape seal was 5 .95 dollars/yd2 and that of conventional cape seal was 3 .99 dollars/yd2. In comparison, the average cost of a 2-in mill and fill corrective maintenance treatment with a conventional asphalt plant mixture in VDOT’s Hampton Roads District was 1 0.35 dollars/yd2.
