The objective is to design processes using Aspen simulation to establish optimum operating conditions by performing various simulation runs which are challenging to execute at lab scale. Increasing energy needs and decline of global oil prices has shifted our focus on commercially developing unconventional and renewable resources. Commercialization of any process relies on developing a process model that identifies different process parameters by performing a steady state mass and heat balance. Aspen simulation is considered an effective process modeling tool which can predict system behavior and optimize the overall process. This thesis showcases an Aspen process model of Ex-Situ Oil Shale process and Biomass Gasification process. General approach towards design for these processes are not much different as they are thermochemical processes. This work identified the critical impact of bed temperature on crude production for oil shale process, while the impact of oxygen flow rate on temperature profile of the system and composition of syngas produced was established in biomass gasification model. A multi-zonal kinetic based model was developed for both processes. These recommended models were designed to simulate a real system which can be modified for different operating settings and facilities. Aspen predicted values were further validated with experimental results from real systems and published data"--Abstract, page iv.

Every developed and developing economy requires access to advanced sources of energy to support its growth and prosperity. Declining worldwide crude oil reserves and increasing energy needs has focused attention on developing existing unconventional fossil fuels like oil shale and renewable resources such as biomass. Sustainable, renewable and reliable resources of domestically produced biomass comparing to wind and solar energy is a sensible motivation to establish a small-scale power plant using biomass as feed to supply electricity demand and heat for rural development. The work in Paper I focuses on the possibility of water pollution from spent oil shale which should be studied before any significant commercial production is attempted. In Paper II, the proposed Aspen models for oil shale pyrolysis is to identify the key process parameters for the reactor and optimize the rate of production of syncrude from oil shale. The work in Paper III focuses on 1. Design and operation of a vertical downdraft reactor, 2. Establishing an optimum operating methodology and parameters to maximize syngas production through process testing. Finally in Paper IV, a proposed Aspen model for biomass gasification simulates a real biomass gasification system discussed in Paper III"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: This study was done to support the research anddevelopment program of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in thethermochemical conversion of biomass to liquid transportation fuels using currentstate-of-the-art technology. The Mitretek study investigated the use of two biomassgasifiers; the RENUGAS gasifier being developed by the Institute of GasTechnology, and the indirectly heated gasifier being developed by BattelleColumbus. The Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus, Ohio indirectly heatedbiomass gasifier was selected for this model development because the syngasproduced by it is better suited for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with an iron-basedcatalyst for which a large amount of experimental data are available. Bechtel with Amocoas a subcontractor developed a conceptual baseline design and several alternativedesigns for indirect coal liquefaction facilities. In addition, ASPEN Plus processflowsheet simulation models were developed for each of designs. These modelswere used to perform several parametric studies to investigate various alternativesfor improving the economics of indirect coal liquefaction.

Book excerpt: "Biomass field liquefaction is a concept where green biomass is chemically treated to produce organic liquids using small-scale equipment in the field. If liquefaction occurs as the crop is harvested, the energy requirements for growing the biomass can be charged to the crop as if the biomass were left in the field. The energy in the organic liquid product is available at the expense of the energy required by the process. A simplified process was simulated using ASPEN to assess the energy production feasibility. Acid catalyzed liquefaction of cellulose and hemicellulose solids produces furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The simulation assumed furfural from xylans and HMF from hexosans were the only organic products. Reaction rate was regressed from published data. Complete physical properties were estimated for HMF using group contribution methods (Marrero-Pardillo, critical properties; Benson, ideal gas heat capacity and standard heat of formation; UNIFAC, vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium). Two figures of merit were determined over a range of process temperatures, residence times, and feed compositions (xylan, hexosan, and a mixture representative of corn stover). Maximum energy recovery ratio was nearly 2/3 and represents the ratio of combustion energy in the organic liquid product minus energy required for the reactor to biomass feed combustion energy. This value occurred at short residence time, desirable for field liquefaction. The product to process energy ratio is the ratio of the combustion energy in the organic liquid product to the process energy requirements. The 9:1 maximum occurred with low temperature and high conversion (long residence time). The value was greater than 7:1 for high temperature and conversion (short residence time), which compares favorably with the enzymatic ethanol biomass reported value of 2.61:1"--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the theory and practice of the simulation and optimization of the petroleum refining processes Petroleum Refinery Process Modeling offers a thorough review of how to quantitatively model key refinery reaction and fractionation processes. The text introduces the basics of dealing with the thermodynamics and physical property predictions of hydrocarbon components in the context of process modeling. The authors - three experts on the topic - outline the procedures and include the key data required for building reaction and fractionation models with commercial software. The text shows how to filter through the extensive data available at the refinery and using plant data to begin calibrating available models and extend the models to include key fractionation sub-models. It provides a sound and informed basis to understand and exploit plant phenomena to improve yield, consistency, and performance. In addition, the authors offer information on applying models in an overall refinery context through refinery planning based on linear programming. This important resource: -Offers the basic information of thermodynamics and physical property predictions of hydrocarbon components in the context of process modeling -Uses the key concepts of fractionation lumps and physical properties to develop detailed models and workflows for atmospheric (CDU) and vacuum (VDU) distillation units -Discusses modeling FCC, catalytic reforming and hydroprocessing units Written for chemical engineers, process engineers, and engineers for measurement and control, this resource explores the advanced simulation tools and techniques that are available to support experienced and aid new operators and engineers.

Book excerpt: During the last six years one of the most productive of the International Energy Agency (IEA) networks on renewable energy, has been the network entitled "Biotechnology for the conversion of Lignocellulosics". One of the reasons for the success of the network has been the interaction of molecular biologists, microbiologists, chemists, engineers, etc., all working together on the technical and economic aspects of biomass conversion of ethanol. The authors of the various chapters in this book are part of this network and were selected for their familiarity with either a specific step of a bioconversion process or for their ability to assess the technical and economic aspects of the overall process. The chapters describe the technical advances that have been made in the various process steps, and also indicate the probable configuration of a biomass to ethanol plant. This book will interest researchers, engineers and industrialists.
