Book excerpt: This study utilized an explanatory mixed method design (quan→QUAL) to investigate the practice of mindfulness in rural secondary schools in the state of Tennessee. This study sought to understand how principals in this context understand the practice of mindfulness and how leadership practices might explain the extent of mindfulness practiced in this setting. This investigation is based on the theoretical construct of organizational mindfulness applied to schools: focus on failure, reluctance to simplify, sensitivity to teaching and learning, commitment to resilience, and deference to expertise. Six rural secondary schools (three high performing and three low performing) participated in the study and were matched according to school size and socioeconomic (SES) percentages. Quantitatively, this study used an independent samples t test to survey teachers (n=94) with Hoy, Gage, and Tarter (2004) M-Scale, that measures teacher perceptions of school mindfulness, the dimensions of principal and faculty mindfulness, and the organizational elements of school mindfulness. Principals in the six participating schools participated in a semistructured interview for the qualitative phase of the investigation. Data from the interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed in a detailed code map. Quantitative results from the survey found that teachers in high performing schools had statistically significantly higher school mindfulness means than teachers in low performing schools. This investigation also discovered that high performing schools had higher mean scores in both dimensions of school mindfulness (principal and faculty), as well has higher mean scores in all organizational elements of mindfulness: focus on failure, reluctance to simplify, sensitivity to teaching and learning, commitment to resilience, and deference to expertise. The qualitative analysis and results found the following themes from the principal interviews: care, collective trust, administrative expertise, social-emotional learning and competencies, enabling formalization and centralization, and situational awareness of the organization. Results from this mixed methods study proposes an expanded school mindfulness organizational model for enhancing the practice of mindfulness in rural secondary schools. Further, results from this investigation suggest avenues for future research and presents implications for rural principals, principal training programs and leadership academies, as well as educational policy.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this inquiry was threefold: first, to conceptualize the construct of mindfulness in public schools; second, to operationalize school mindfulness; and third, to develop and test a path model relating mindfulness to faculty trust, enabling school structure, principal disposition toward mindfulness, and collective efficacy. After successfully accomplishing the first two objectives, a path model was advanced to explain the relationships among variables under study. The model proposed direct relations between school mindfulness and collective efficacy, enabling school structure, and principal's disposition towards mindfulness. Furthermore, it anticipated three positive indirect relations: school mindfulness and faculty trust in the principal, through enabling structure; faculty trust in clients, through collective efficacy; and faculty trust in colleagues, through enabling structure with school mindfulness. The path model was tested with a diverse sample of 75 middle schools in Ohio. The results provided partial support for the model. Significant relationships were found between school mindfulness and both faculty trust in clients and collective efficacy. Further, as anticipated, faculty trust in the principal, enabling school structure and school mindfulness also yielded significant results; however, the paths between the principal's disposition toward mindfulness and school mindfulness and faculty trust in colleagues and enabling structure were not significant. Finally, the practical, research, and theoretical implications of the findings were discussed. The results of the study were encouraging and are seen as a beginning not an end. A more refined and elaborated model of mindfulness that includes student achievement is the next step in the research agenda. Ultimately, the challenge of designing schools to improve student learning is a paramount objective and school mindfulness seems an important piece of that puzzle.

Academic optimism is a construct made of up the tenets of collective efficacy, faculty trust, and academic emphasis. Mindfulness, individual and organizational, joins academic optimism to create meaningful leadership strategies that can be used develop more effective school. It was hypothesized in the study that the greater degree of a school individual and organizational mindfulness, the greater the degree of academic optimism. Additionally, it was hypothesized that the variable of socio-economic status (SES) of the school would have a significant impact on mindfulness and academic optimism of the school. This study examined three school systems located in Northern Alabama with a total of 577 elementary, middle, and high school teachers in 39 schools. Two survey instruments and the SES of each school were used to address these inquiries. Mindfulness was measured using the School Mindfulness Scale (Hoy & Gage, 2003) and academic optimism was measured using the School Academic Optimism Survey (Hoy, 2005). As predicted, the hypotheses addressing mindfulness and academic optimism were supported by the outcomes from this study which demonstrated that the greater the degree of a school (organizational) mindfulness, the greater the degree of the school academic optimism. Significantly, results for socio-economic status (SES) showed that influence of socio-economic status was minimal. The study confirmed much of the literature in regard to the relationships of organizational mindfulness, which is, but not limited to practicing an open, creative, multi-perspective state of being, academic optimism, and SES.
