Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant neurobiology is a newly emerging field of plant sciences. It covers signalling and communication at all levels of biological organization – from molecules up to ecological communities. In this book, plants are presented as intelligent and social organisms with complex forms of communication and information processing. Authors from diverse backgrounds such as molecular and cellular biology, electrophysiology, as well as ecology treat the most important aspects of plant communication, including the plant immune system, abilities of plants to recognize self, signal transduction, receptors, plant neurotransmitters and plant neurophysiology. Further, plants are able to recognize the identity of herbivores and organize the defence responses accordingly. The similarities in animal and plant neuronal/immune systems are discussed too. All these hidden aspects of plant life and behaviour will stimulate further intense investigations in order to understand the communicative plants in their whole complexity.

Book excerpt: Demonstrates how advances in plant chemical biology can translate to field applications With contributions from a team of leading researchers and pioneers in the field, this book explains how chemical biology is used as a tool to enhance our understanding of plant biology. Readers are introduced to a variety of chemical biology studies that have provided novel insights into plant physiology and plant cellular processes. Moreover, they will discover that chemical biology not only leads to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of plant biology, but also the development of practical applications. For example, the authors discuss small molecules that can be used to identify targets of herbicides and develop new herbicides and plant growth regulators. The book begins with a historical perspective on plant chemical biology. Next, the authors introduce the chemical biology toolbox needed to perform successful studies, with chapters covering: Sources of small molecules Identification of new chemical tools by high-throughput screening (HTS) Use of chemical biology to study plant physiology Use of chemical biology to study plant cellular processes Target identification Translation of plant chemical biology from the lab to the field Based on the latest findings and extensively referenced, the book explores available compound collections, principles of assay design, and the use of new research tools for the development of new applications. Plant Chemical Biology is recommended for students and professionals in all facets of plant biology, including molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, agriculture, horticulture, and agronomy. All readers will discover new approaches that can lead to the development of a healthier and more plentiful global food supply.

Book excerpt: Molecular Aspects of Plant Beneficial Microbes in Agriculture explores their diverse interactions, including the pathogenic and symbiotic relationship which leads to either a decrease or increase in crop productivity. Focusing on these environmentally-friendly approaches, the book explores their potential in changing climatic conditions. It presents the exploration and regulation of beneficial microbes in offering sustainable and alternative solutions to the use of chemicals in agriculture. The beneficial microbes presented here are capable of contributing to nutrient balance, growth regulators, suppressing pathogens, orchestrating immune response and improving crop performance. The book also offers insights into the advancements in DNA technology and bioinformatic approaches which have provided in-depth knowledge about the molecular arsenal involved in mineral uptake, nitrogen fixation, growth promotion and biocontrol attributes.

Book excerpt: Latest figures suggest that approximately 20% of the world's population of six billion is malnourished because of food shortages and inadequate distrib ution systems. To make matters worse, it is estimated that some 75 billion metric tons of soil are removed annually from the land by wind and soil ero sion, much of it from agricultural land, which is thereby rendered unsuitable for agricultural purposes. Moreover, out of a total land area under cultivation 9 6 of approximately 1. 5 x 10 ha, some 12 x 10 ha of arable land are destroyed and abandoned worldwide each year because of unsustainable agricultural practices. Add to this the fact that the world population is increasing at the rate of a quarter of a million per day, and the enormity of the task ahead becomes apparent. To quote the eminent wheat breeder E. R. Sears, It seems clear that plant geneticists can look forward to an expanded role in the 21st century, particularly in relation to plant improvement. The suc cess of these efforts may go a long way towards determining whether the world's increasing billions of humans will be adequately fed. Food for an ever-increasing population will have to be produced not only from an ever-diminishing, but from what will become an ever-deteriorating land resource unless justifiable environmental concerns are taken into account.

The content included in the papers is contributed by different authors; it is mostly original and supplemented by the works of other workers published in India and elsewhere. The contributions include phenological and ecological aspects of reproduction in tree taxa in the scrub vegetation, reproductive ecology of Acacia farnesiana, A. sinuata and Semecarpus anacardium, Rauvolfia tetraphylla, R. micrantha, ornithophily, ornithochory, wasp-flower relationships in sustaining biodiversity, conservation status of chelonian fauna, information about thelypteroid ferns, marine woodborer fauna, floristics and ethnobotany of mangroves, bee flora, honeybee pollination in Matricaria chamomilla, Cucurbita pepo, Luffa acutangula, enhancing the seed yield of sunflower, biochemical profiles of floral rewards for honeybees, importance of organic farming for sustainable agriculture, inventorization and prioritization of wetlands of Orissa using remote sensing and GIS, biodiversity assessment and spatial modeling for biological richness analysis, etc. All these aspects were discussed at length. The information provided is of prime importance for the conservation and management of ecological interactions taking place at different stages of plant and animal life. The information provided on mangroves is a good contribution to the existing knowledge on mangroves of India. The information on ornithophily and ornithochory in the plants of Eastern Ghats is highly useful for taking steps for the effective conservation of habitats and at the same time for the promotion of ecotourism prospects. The reproductive biology information on certain plants in the Eastern Ghats is highly valuable for understanding the relationships between plants and insects at flowering stage. Honey bee flora for certain areas and honey bees role in enhancing pollination and seed production rate were also well explained for consideration in bee-keeping practices. Further, this book also provides certain important information about biodiversity assessment using remote sensing and geographical information systems. Therefore, this book is a collection of information on different aspects of plants and animals at species level, ecosystem level and finally the interactions between them for sustaining biodiversity. This book is an important dictionary for those working in the subjects of conservation biology of terrestrial and mangrove forests and apiculture; in ornithology and remote sensing and geographical information systems.

The book discusses the extent, causes, and impacts of flooding; the effects of flooding on soils and on the growth and metabolism of herbaceous plants; and the responses of woody plants to flooding. The text also describes the effect of flooding on water, carbohydrate, and mineral relations, as well as the effects of flooding on hormone relations and on plant disease. The adaptations to flooding with fresh water and the adaptations of plants to flooding with salt water are also encompassed. Agronomists, biochemists, plant ecologists, engineers, foresters, horticulturists, plant anatomists, meteorologists, geneticists, plant breeders, plant physiologists, and landscape architects will find the book invaluable.
