Book excerpt: The city of Konya (ancient Iconium) has long been one of the most important Anatolian centres. In the late first century BC it was refounded as a Roman colony, and the centuries of the Roman Empire were among the most prosperous for the region. This volume provides texts and commentaries for the 231 Greek and ten Latin inscriptions now housed in the city's archaeological museum. The collection comprises 92 inscriptions from Konya itself and 149 from the surrounding region, nearly two thirds of them previously unpublished. Almost two hundred further inscriptions from Konya are listed and indexed at the end of the volume, so that for the first time there is a complete index of all people known from the ancient city of Iconium. The texts here shed an irreplaceable light on city and country society around a major centre from the early Roman to the Byzantine period, and the photographs at the end of the volume illustrate most of the characteristic inscribed monuments for the first time.

Yet critical analysts also describe it as an ad hoc blend of Green and Jewish elements. In this study, Clare K. Rothschild examines how the nexus of popular second-century traditions crystallizing around the Cretan prophet Epimenides explains these seemingly miscellaneous and impromptu aspects of the text. Her investigation exposes correspondences between Epimenidea and the Lukan Paul, not limited to the altar "to an unknown god" and the saying, "In him, we live, and move, and have our being" (17:28a), concluding that in addition to popular philosophical ideals, the episode of Paul in Athens utilizes popular 'religious' topoi to reinforce a central narrative aim.

Jones’s selection of Gifford lectures includes excerpts from the writings of over ninety scholars who occupied a Gifford Chair between 1888 and 1968. Lord Gifford had asked his lecturers to be ‘honest to God’, insisting that they should be ‘earnest enquirers after truth’ and had always envisaged the lectures being published. Dr Jones’s anthology is arranged under headings suggested by phrases from Lord Gifford’s will. The selection, which includes names such as William James, A.N. Whitehead, Temple, Barth, Brunner, Bultmann, Niebuhr and Tillich, was made in such a way that the reader would be able to really grasp what natural theology is about. Bernard Ewart Jones served as a Methodist minister, before being appointed to the Lewins Chair of Philosophy at his old college, Hartley Victoria, Manchester. He was awarded a doctorate by the University of Leeds in 1966 for his thesis on ‘The Concept of Natural Theology in Gifford Lectures’.
