Book Synopsis The Resurgence of Central Asia by : Ahmed Rashid
Download or read book The Resurgence of Central Asia written by Ahmed Rashid and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal introduction to the rise of Central Asia, covering Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan The Resurgence of Central Asia is Ahmed Rashid’s seminal study of the states that emerged in the aftermath of the breakup of the Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. All have Muslim majorities and ancient histories but are otherwise very different. Rashid’s book, now with a new introduction by the author examining some of the crucial political developments since its first publication in 1994, provides entrée to this little-known but geopolitically important region. Rashid gives a history of each country, including its incorporation into Tsarist Russia, to the present day, provides basic socioeconomic information, and explains the diverse political situations. He focuses primarily on the underlying issues confronting these societies: the legacy of Soviet rule, ethnic tensions, the position of women, the future of Islam, the question of nuclear proliferation, and the fundamental choices over economic strategy, political system, and external orientation that lie ahead.
Book Synopsis The Decline of Empires in South Asia by : Heather A. Campbell
Download or read book The Decline of Empires in South Asia written by Heather A. Campbell and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-First World War period was pivotal in global history, international relations and geopolitics. And no more than in South Asia. where for decades the 'Great Game' in geopolitical rivalry of the two greatest modern empires - Britain and Russia - had dominated international relations. But with the advent of Communism in Russia and growing nationalism and pan-Islamism in Afghanistan, Persia and India, Britian's imperial standing was under threat. Faced with these problems, some in the British government, such as Lord Curzon, the dominant imperialist in the British Foreign Office, fell back on what they knew - old patterns of rivalry and high-handedness that characterised the Great Game. Not all, however, agreed with Curzon, and with war in Afghanistan, civil unrest in India, and rising tensions in Persia, those who opposed this Great Game mindset advocated a new way forward for British foreign relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charismatic pastors, fast-paced worship sessions, inspirational but shallow theology, and large congregations — these are just some of the associated traits of Pentecostal megachurches. But what lies beneath the veneer of glitz? What are their congregations like? How did they grow so quickly? How have they managed to negotiate local and transnational challenges? This book seeks to understand the growth and popularity of independent Pentecostal megachurches in Southeast Asia. Using an ethnographic approach, the chapters examine Pentecostal megachurches in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Each chapter dwells on the development of the megachurch set against the specific background of the country’s politics and history.

Book Synopsis Charles A. Willoughby and the Anti-Communist Crusade by : John W. Lemza
Download or read book Charles A. Willoughby and the Anti-Communist Crusade written by John W. Lemza and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beware the Red Peril!" was the clarion call of General Charles A. Willoughby at the close of World War II. The refrain echoed from Capitol Hill into American living rooms. For three decades after the war, the Old Right crusaded against global communist expansion, sniffing out internal and external threats to the American way of life. These paleo-conservatives faced resistance from the Left, as well as from an emerging faction on the Right that sought to frame a new identity for conservatism. Despite those obstacles, the Old Right made a lasting imprint on geopolitical thought in the early Cold War period. This book investigates their influence, the roles played by women, minorities and Jewish conservatives, and their legacy in early 20th century ideologies.
