Book excerpt: I have great pleasure in placing the report of One Day National Seminar on Forgotten Heroes: Stories of Unsung Heroes, Freedom Fighters”. The background of this National Seminar , undertaken with the financial assistance of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. The Seminar attempted to recall and remember forgotten Heroes of our freedom movement, many of whom might be renowed yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recalling and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we atke our unsung heroes along this journey of grwoth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and respected. Thanks are primarily due to financial support by Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and their constant support during the whole process. I am also highly thankful to Convener, Debates and Seminar Committee of Government Degree College Tral who provided all kind of support in organising this national seminar. I am also highly thankful to other colleagues who supported me during this event. Dr. M.Shafi Bhat

The preface serves as a gateway to the uncelebrated heroes whose deeds, though buried beneath the sands of time, are deserving of acknowledgment. It is an exploration into the lives of those who, with unyielding determination, stood shoulder to shoulder with the more recognized figures of the Indian freedom movement. The narratives encapsulated herein delve into the untold sacrifices made by these unsung heroes. Their stories echo the sentiment that the fight for freedom was a collective endeavor, shaped not only by the luminaries but also by countless individuals who believed in the dream of a free and united India. In resurrecting their spirit of sacrifice, we pay homage to the essence of selflessness that fueled the struggle.

Book excerpt: It was a cold morning, the Nineteenth day of December, in the year 1927, when a well-built young man, barely Thirty, walked to the gallows, with the chants of Vande Mataram on his lips in Gorakhpur prison. This death will be mourned by the patriots who would follow him in the struggle for Independence. This death will be forgotten by many in the years after independence. As the youth of today follows false heroes from the foreign lands, why do we know so little about our own revolutionaries and heroes like Ram Prasad Bismil? It is mostly because their truth, their story was pushed away from the public view to the dark corners. His memoirs and writings suffered the same fate as his memories. This book is an attempt to revive his memories because they hold answers to many questions of the future. “It is my sincere wish that this memoir of the great son of Mother India be read by as many people as possible, so that we are able to appreciate the value of freedom we enjoy today (and often take for granted) and do not repeat the mistakes of the past which had once placed us under the dark shadows of slavery and kept us under curse of a foreign rule for a long time.” - Umashri Bharti, Ex Minister, Government of India. "Ramprasad Bismil, in his being, represents the quintessential Indian. Grew up through adversity, still kept the flame of nationalism burning in his heart. Often let down, often betrayed, he never lost hope for the India that he believed was ripe not only for a revolution, rather also for a renaissance. I would urge every nationalist Indian to read this autobiography." - Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Ex- Chief Minister and Senior BJP leader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a readable history of India from 712 A.D. to August 1947. Quotable opinions about Hindu Civilization are followed by six collections of the verses of the HOLY QURAN for the readers to determine whether Muslims are a separate nation; whether the structure of a typical Muslim society is owing to class struggle as defined by Marx; why Communism failed to make a dent in Islamic societies and whether it is possible to live peaceably with Muslims. By the beginning of the eighth century A.D. Mussalmans ventured effective thrusts into Indian Sub-continent. Hindus were ruthlessly converted to Islam and within two centuries Hindu Civilization was wiped out of the entire region of Sindh. The Arabs learned from HINDUS the decimal system of writing numbers, logic, astronomy, architecture, medicine, and fine arts. Arabs made incursions into India for plundering and destroying places of worship of kafirs and collecting lawful war booty consisting of unimaginable wealth, prized women, and slaves. The events are presented without any emotional muck or pre-conceived notions. Muslim rule was characterized by compulsions, carnages, vandalism, and cataclysmic upheavals for the subject race, not for days or months, or years but from century to century. Muslim conquerors dashed from one corner to the other of the sub-continent. The natives dispossessed of nationality were under constant persecution scourged by calamities, epidemics, famines, and large-scale slaughters. As the attrition between Shia principalities of the south and Delhi Sultanates was taking different aspects Europeans came prowling through various sides for trade and foothold and Christian proselytism. Mughal emperors, Farruk Siyar and Shah Alam II transferred de jure sovereignty of India to the English. How Indian slaves were treated as “Jungli” wretches by the British is a tantalizing story. An English civil servant A.O.Humes laid the foundation of the Indian National Congress with the blessings of Lord Dufferin. Varied and mosaic political activities of the party accentuated communal fault lines which pulled apart appreciable chunks of land in the East and West as a separate homeland for Muslims. There are separate chapters on Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose. I desired to write a book for Hindus. Though I wrote some books and poetry but could not find time to write this book. In 2002 I suffered a serious accident and had to be hospitalized for a head injury and later for prostrate resection. It took a long time to recover. I am really indebted to my wife who made it possible for me to write this book and complete it. I am thankful to my daughter Dr. Raj Shree Dhar, Professor of Mathematics, for her creative suggestions in publishing the manuscript. T.N. Dhar

Book excerpt: Identity conflicts, a prominent feature of our times, a phenomenon of belonging somewhere yet belonging nowhere, are increasingly finding their way into cinema. This book looks at the representations of identity conflicts in India on the canvas of Indian cinema, connecting them with broader socio-political developments in contemporary India. Starting with the historical background of how political developments in Europe like the emergence of Nation states, secularism, modernity influenced socio-political developments in India in the past century, the book looks at how those developments have shaped modern India. While looking at the cinematic representations of a variety of identity conflicts through the lens of cultural and political analysis, it provides insights into how the construct of an Identity and the inherent conflicts associated with it evolve and manifest themselves through the medium of a film.
