Book Synopsis Australia's Foreign Economic Policy and ASEAN by : Jiro Okamoto
Download or read book Australia's Foreign Economic Policy and ASEAN written by Jiro Okamoto and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2010 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jiro Okamoto explores the development of Australia's foreign economic policy towards ASEAN. He examines in detail decisive factors such as changes in the international and regional environment and the replacement of a dominant policy coalition with another in Australia's domestic policy process. His analysis shows that the shifts in Australia's ASEAN policy have not only closely reflected changes in Australia's overall foreign economic policy orientation, but that Australia's ASEAN policy strongly drove the change at key junctures. His work also offers important insights into the prospect of an "inclusive" economic integration process in East Asia. Although Australia's foreign economic policy has been an important element in regional economic cooperation, its inclusion in the East Asian integration process still remains ambiguous.

Book Synopsis Australia-New Zealand & Southeast Asia Relations by : Kin Wah Chin
Download or read book Australia-New Zealand & Southeast Asia Relations written by Kin Wah Chin and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that despite past differences and periodic setbacks, the relationship between ANZ and Southeast Asia has become increasingly solid and multi-faceted, as successive Australian, New Zealand and Southeast Asian governments have taken steps since the early 1970s to facilitate mutual ties and interaction in a wide range of areas. What is most striking is that in recent years much of the real substance in the relationship between ANZ and Southeast Asia has developed without the direct assistance or guidance of governments as private business, education and travel have mushroomed. From being largely government-fostered in the 1970s, the links between the two regions have become more broadly based and oriented towards closer contacts between people. This is the "soft power" of the new relationship between ANZ and Southeast Asia.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Migration and Post-industrialising Australia by : Patrick Brownlee
Download or read book The Political Economy of Migration and Post-industrialising Australia written by Patrick Brownlee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s and 1990s, Australia’s migration intake turned rapidly towards recruiting business professionals, managers and entrepreneurs to support the country’s entry into an economic system marked by global value chains. This book analyses the policy idea termed Productive Diversity, introduced by the Australian government as a way of conceptualising the belief that migrants would bring business acumen and a global outlook to help Australia compete as a trading nation. The book examines this germinal period of Australia’s economic reorientation through a close inspection of policy documents, parliamentary hearings, economic and migration statistics, and interviews with the architects of the policy. It provides a comprehensive account of how the policy framework emerged, how it was implemented, and studies the rationale in recruiting self-starters and managers to connect with global trade flows. This work will be of interest to students and researchers of migration studies, especially Australian migration, diversity policies, sociology, multiculturalism, economics, development studies, and Asia-Pacific studies. The methods and data will also be of value to political economists and policy makers.
Book Synopsis States, International Organizations and Strategic Partnerships by : Lucyna Czechowska
Download or read book States, International Organizations and Strategic Partnerships written by Lucyna Czechowska and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In post-Cold War international relations, strategic partnerships are an emerging and distinct analytical and political category critical in understanding the dynamics of contemporary strategic cooperation between states and International Organizations. However, the idea of strategic partnerships has remained under-theorized and overshadowed by the alliance theory. Addressing this clear-cut gap in the International Relations/Foreign Policy Analysis literature, this book originally endeavors to theorize and empirically test the analytical model of strategic partnerships as a new form of sustainable international cooperation in times of globalized interdependence and turbulence.

Book Synopsis Australia's Foreign Aid Dilemma by : Jack Corbett
Download or read book Australia's Foreign Aid Dilemma written by Jack Corbett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian aid program faces a fundamental dilemma: how, in the absence of deep popular support, should it generate the political legitimacy required to safeguard its budget and administering institution? Australia’s Foreign Aid Dilemma tells the story of the actors who have grappled with this question over 40 years. It draws on extensive interviews and archival material to uncover how 'court politics' shapes both aid policy and administration. The lesson for scholars and practitioners is that any holistic understanding of the development enterprise must account for the complex relationship between the aid program of individual governments and the domestic political and bureaucratic contexts in which it is embedded. If the way funding is administered shapes development outcomes, then understanding the 'court politics' of aid matters. This comprehensive text will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of politics and foreign policy as well as development professionals in Australia and across the world.
