Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the aim of this edited volume to take a hard look at gender and visual culture. Gender and visual culture traverse in quite unique and often fascinating ways. On the one hand, gender functions as an interdisciplinary approach and critical tool to analyse and investigate several subject fields. As such, gender contributes to establishing a much-needed theoretical and functional platform spanning across many fields of enquiry from where gender practices can effectively be critiqued and ideally changed. On the other hand, the growing popularity and ubiquity of visual culture in a global context create the increasing need to reflect on and interrogate this phenomenon in an academic manner. Although Visual Culture Studies is an established subject at many Northern institutions, it is fairly new and relatively under-theorised in the South. In response to the growing need to investigate issues dealing with gender and visual culture and particularly how they creatively intersect, this selection of chapters (first presented as papers at the Taking a Hard Look: Gender and Visual Culture international conference, 20-21 June 2007, Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Pretoria, South Africa) are collected here in the hope to make a purposeful contribution to the burgeoning discourse. However, by addressing the creative intersection between gender and visual culture this edited volume is no novelty. In fact, the topic of gender and visual culture has been addressed over the past decade in several edited volumes. It is in this proud tradition that this book aims to take its place and to create a dialogue with international theory on gender and visual culture studies from a South perspective. Key questions that are explored in the volume: What type of gendered visual culture is being presented and created in the South particularly (but not exclusively)? How is visual culture gendered? Can one refer to a move beyond gender in terms of a trans-gendered visual culture or are we still caught up in the same debilitating role models? How does one address the ever-increasing alienation between gender studies and the younger generation of students and scholars moving into higher education? What is the role of gender as interdisciplinary tool in the academic analysis of visual culture as it spans across several subjects, such as science, social work, technology, psychology, medicine, philosophy, sociology, engineering, communication, economics, religious studies, business management, anthropology, geography, historical studies, cultural and media studies, visual studies, art history and literature studies?

Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the literature of 21st century international visual arts education by providing a structured approach to understanding the benefits of Philosophical Realism in art education, an approach that has received little international attention until now. The framework as presented provides a powerful interface between research and practical reconceptualisations of critical issues and practice in the domains of art, design, and education that involve implications for curriculum in visual arts, teaching and learning, cognitive development, and creativity. The book extends understanding of Philosophical Realism in its practical application to teaching practice in visual arts in the way it relates to the fields of art, design, and education. Researchers, teacher educators and specialist art teachers are informed about how Philosophical Realism provides insights into art, design, and education. These insights vary from clearer knowledge about art to the examination of beliefs and assumptions about the art object. Readers learn how cognitive reflection, and social and practical reasoning in the classroom help cultivate students’ artistic performances, and understand how constraints function in students’ reasoning at different ages/stages of education.

Book excerpt: Charles Reid is one of watercolor's best-loved teachers, a master painter whose signature style captures bright floral still-lifes with a loose spontaneity that adds immeasurably to the whole composition. Portraying the glory of nature in a highly individual way is the ultimate challenge for all painters, and with this book, Charles Reid shares with you the instruction and advice you need to paint fruits, vegetables and flowers that glow. Special "assignments" and step-by-step demonstrations help you master techniques for superior brushwork, edge control, and composition. You'll learn to paint wild daffodils, roses, mums, sunflowers, lilacs, tomatoes, avocados, oranges, strawberries, jars, coffeepots, wine bottles and more. Reid also shows you how to paint flowers in any environment, from the tranquility of a warm kitchen to a windswept beach in Bermuda. You'll create a garden of floral glories--compositions that burst with light, color and realism. Best of all, as your proficiency for capturing the essence of flowers builds, so too will your personal style. Soon your paintings will depict the beauty of nature in your own individual fashion. Let Charles Reid show you how to create beautiful watercolor florals from start to finish!

Book excerpt: What are soul groups? What is the reality of the spirit world? What lies at the mysterious realm of life between lives? Do our past lives really catch up with us in the present? Past Lives Unveiled takes a fresh, new look at past lives and reincarnation. It features some highly unusual case studies, including two intriguing hypnotic regressions by eminent psychologist, author and past life expert Dr Michael Newton. Two sisters were regressed independently by Dr Newton and went back to life in a Stone Age tribe, details of which have until now been limited to members of the Newton Institute. The author, Barry Eaton, was regressed by Peter Smith, a past-life expert and international president of the Newton Institute. Graphic visitations to ancient Greece and also the US at the time of the Civil War make absorbing reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the paradox of creativity in art education and proposes a possible resolution. Based on the findings of a longitudinal ethnographic study as a particular case of creative practice in art education, this book is underpinned by Bourdieu’s concepts of the habitus, symbolic capital and misrecognition. The author offers an insightful account of social reasoning within creative practice in the senior school art classroom, examining ongoing exchanges between students and their teacher. Ultimately, these exchanges culminate in actions, beliefs and desires about what is creatively conceivable in the making of art, while providing confirmation without corruption of the pedagogical role of the art teacher. Allowing the context of creative agency to emerge afresh, this book will be of interest and value to art educators and teachers committed to fostering the creative performances of students in any field.
