Book excerpt: Hugged and hated by Hitler, cheered by Churchill, traumatized by Tracy and Turner, loved and wounded by luscious women--Paul Kuttner's life can only be described as an accumulation of sky-high adventurous summits and, on the other side of the human scale, an endless row of diabolically hard times. An early life of goo fortune turned when Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. Two meetings with the Gestapo, and an internment by the English on the Isle of Man for suspected spying later, and Mr. Kuttner made his way to the United States where he worked as a Hollywood reporter. This thrilling and poignant memoir recounts a sensational life filled with personal struggles and lingering memories of extraordinary encounters with Hollywood legends, a few saintly people, and some of the most heinous war criminals of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers have discussed art – or artistic practices such as poetry – since ancient times. But systems of art and entertainment appeared only in the modern era – in the West, during the 18th and 19th centuries. And philosophers have largely neglected the concept of entertainment. In this book Andy Hamilton explores art and entertainment from a philosophical standpoint. He argues, against modernist theory, that art and entertainment are not opposites, but form a loosely connected conceptual system. Against postmodernism, however, he insists on their vital differences. Hamilton begins by questioning the received modernist view, examining artist-entertainers including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. Entertainment, he argues, is by nature audience-centred – but so is art, in a different way. Thus while art should pass the test of time, entertainment must pass the test of its own time – it has to entertain at the time it is produced. Art and entertainment are inter-dependent concepts, and must be understood together with other aesthetic concepts including criticism, genius, canons and design. These concepts form the subject of later chapters of this book, where Hamilton develops a meritocratic position that is neither elitist nor populist. He also addresses the contemporary charge of cultural appropriation, and qualifies it. An innovative feature of the book is the inclusion of dialogues with artists, critics and academics that help to recast or reformulate the debate. Art and Entertainment: A Philosophical Exploration is essential reading for those working in art and aesthetics, and will also be of interest to those in related disciplines such as cultural studies, music and film studies, with an interest in entertainment.

Book excerpt: The book is composed of statements made by deniers, and Kuttner's rebuttals based on historical documents and testimonies. Presents the main arguments put forward by Holocaust deniers. Some of them allege that the Holocaust did not take place at all; others try to diminish its scope or relativize it. Some revisionists, although they do not deny the fact of the mass murder of Jews, challenge the existence of killing centers and gas chambers, or try to absolve perpetrators or collaborator groups of responsibility. Many allegations attack the Jews in one way or another, and border on justification of the Nazi genocide.

Book excerpt: A special, première release of this groundbreaking book on the art of advertising and brand management to coincide with the 2018 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.A collection of essays from jurors on the 2017 Lions Entertainment award. Drawing on years of experience and expertise, working for brands such as Mini, Coca-Cola, Lego, Google, Skype and Intel and for media and advertising giants such as Bartle Bogle Hegarty and MediaCom, the contributors provide a fun and far-reaching study of the evolution of branding and the future of advertising.Live television viewing is decreasing as audiences choose to stream television shows and films via catch-up, YouTube, Netflix, iTunes and other digital platforms. With that shift, intrusive commercial advertising breaks are quickly losing their power as the leading way in which brands communicate with viewers. For the past five years the Cannes Lions international Festival of Creativity has been grappling with how the entertainment and marketing worlds can collaborate in fresh and innovative ways, rather than unsophisticated product placement. In 2017 twenty specialist jurors considered a wide range of ideas submitted in the relatively uncharted category of branded entertainment, regarded by many as the future of advertising. For days they deliberated on what made an entry more or less successful. This book conveys their comprehensively debated conclusions in a series of stimulating essays authored by each juror.Contributors to The Art of Branded Entertainment: Monica Chun, President of PMK.BNC; Jules Daly, president of RSA Films; Ricardo Dias, CMO of Anheuser-Busch InBev's Grupo Modelo in Mexico; Samantha Glynne, Global Vice President of Branded Entertainment at TV production giant FremantleMedia; Carol Goll, ICM Partners Global Head of Branded Entertainment; Gabor Harrach, the New York-based film and TV producer and former Head of Entertainment Content at Red Bull Media House; Marissa Nance, Managing Director for Multicultural Content Marketing & Strategic Partnerships at Media Superpower OMD; Toan Nguyen, partner at Jung von Matt/SPORTS; Luciana Olivares, CCO of Latina Media in Peru; Marcelo Páscoa, Head of Global Brand Marketing at Burger King; PJ Pereira, Founder and Creative Chairman of Pereira O'Dell; Misha Sher, Vice-President at MediaCom Worldwide; Pelle Sjoenell, Bartle Bogle Hegarty's Global Chief Creative Officer; Tomoya Suzuki, CEO of Stories International; Jason Xenopoulos, Chief Vision Officer and Chief Creative Officer of VML.
