Book excerpt: Automatic style characterization is the process of measuring, extracting, and analysing different formal elements. Brushstroke technique, in conjunction with other formal elements such as colour and texture, play a vital role in defining an artistic style. This thesis explores the stroke-based style analysis of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, who is well-known for his use of wide and repetitive brushstrokes. Novel brushstroke extraction techniques are used to segment and analyse Van Gogh’s brushstrokes. The extracted features can then be compiled into a feature set which represents the quantified brushstrokes’ properties and tested using several classification based tests. The most contributing factor for detecting visible brushstroke is the brushstroke’s texture, due to the fact that the texture-based segmentation methods give more satisfactory results in extracting visible brushstrokes with their average classification accuracy and F-measure being 98.30% and 0.973 respectively.

Typically, artistic movements are characterized by a single style but the Arts and Crafts produced both organic and geometric forms. Examining two Arts and Crafts retrospective exhibitions, I find that organic aesthetics predominated in Great Britain, Scandinavian countries, and Hungary and that geometric aesthetics were more prevalent in the United States, Germany, and Austria. This finding is largely consistent with previous sociological research on artistic form, which has found that stronger political-economies are more likely to produce geometric work while weaker political-economies are more likely to produce organic work. Austria, however, is a contradictory case and here the Arts and Crafts movement was more geometric than the political-economic model would predict. Through a comparative-historical study, I determine that the cause of aesthetic diversity of the Arts and Crafts movement was not per se a region's political-economic situation. Rather--and in contradiction to existing sociological theories of artistic style--the aesthetic variation of the Arts and Crafts was a function of whether, in a given country, the movement was backward-looking or forward-looking which, in turn, was function of which Arts and Crafts principles particular regions privileged. In regions where the members of the movement emphasized the value of labor (Great Britain) or regionalism (Scandinavia and Hungary), the movement was backward-looking and characterized by an organic aesthetic. In contrast, in regions that emphasized the democratization of the arts (the United States and Germany) or artistic unity (Austria), the movement was forward-looking and characterized by a geometric aesthetic. I further argue that in order to make sense of the ideological diversity of the movement, we must appreciate that the Arts and Crafts was a cultural manifestation of a period of political and economic turbulence characterized by the emergence of the first great world-wide depression, the decline of British hegemony, and the rise of American hegemony. The Arts and Crafts movement served to buffer the disruptive effects of this period and, in doing so, helped to usher in the modern age.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known across the world simply by the name Raphael, stands as one of the main pillars of the High Renaissance, an iconic example of the balance between spirituality and Humanistic inquiry that characterized the time period. Although he lived just 37 years, his career produced an amazingly rich output, and he completed more works than many artists do over careers spanning twice the length. At the same time, Raphael's art combined central tropes associated with the Renaissance while remaining remarkably original. Vincent van Gogh is undoubtedly one of the most famous artists of all time, and though the critical establishment may not consider him the greatest artist who ever lived, there may be no artist with whom the public has a greater familiarity. Unfortunately, a great deal of that familiarity comes from the circumstances leading up to his death, and the manner in which they have been linked to his painting career. In 1882, Vincent would hauntingly and somewhat prophetically write to his brother Theo, "What am I in the eyes of most people - a nonentity, an eccentric, or an unpleasant person - somebody who has no position in society and will never have; in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then - even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart." In their biography of Pablo Picasso, Hans Ludwig and Chris Jaffe note that "for him, art was always adventure: 'To find is the thing.'" Indeed, there is perhaps no artist who produced more art than Picasso, whose enormous oeuvre (which spanned most of his 91-year life) contained a countless number of paintings and drawings. Picasso also worked in other mediums as well, notably sculpture and lithography, and his constant experimentation with form makes him a useful case study through which to chart the growth of Modernism as an artistic movement and many of the artistic trends that would dominate the 20th century.

To this day, it is difficult to think of Raphael without considering his artistic rivals, and comparing the artwork between Raphael and his contemporaries illuminates Raphael's artistic style and the reception surrounding his work. In many ways, his art synthesized the styles of other artists; Raphael's artwork was not produced in a vacuum, and his career reflects the rise of the artist as a culturally significant figure while also preserving the grandeur of the church. Even if he lacked the innovation of Leonardo or Michelangelo, Raphael was every bit as renowned during the time period, and an analysis of his life explains his mass appeal and cultural significance.

However, the artistic style of post-war stained glass design was a radical departure from stained glass design of previous eras. Mid-twentieth century stained glass reflected the modern architectural and artistic styles then prevalent. This thesis outlines the life and art of Robert A. Leader (1924-2006), an artist who designed stained glass windows and other liturgical art from the 1950s through the 1990s. His work is located in over fifty sites throughout the Midwest United States, mostly Roman Catholic churches and chapels. This thesis also examines the influences for Mr. Leader's stained glass designs, including the Roman Catholic liturgical reform movement and the modern art movements of the twentieth century. Although Mr. Leader experienced the horrors of the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II (he was part of the original forty-man Marine patrol that planted the United States flag on Mount Suribachi), his World War II experiences strengthened his religious faith and further sharpened his appreciation for art. After the War, he pursued a career in Roman Catholic liturgical art and design. He also taught art and design at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Mr. Leader's designs are characterized by his use of abstract artistic styles, an optimization and masterful manipulation of light and color to convey mood and the use of various techniques to evoke movement both within individual windows and among an ensemble of windows. Mr. Leader rejected realism and naturalism in art. His art exhibits influences ranging from medieval art, Beuronese art of the nineteenth century and art of twentieth century modernist artists, such as Johan Thorn Prikker, Theo van Doesburg and Georges Rouault.Mr. Leader's life and artistic works illustrate the effect of the upheaval of the mid-twentieth century on art and design. Leader's talent for the artistic combination of light and color and his extensive knowledge of art history resulted in unique mid-twentieth century liturgical spaces. An examination of Mr. Leader's work can lead to an increased appreciation for mid-twentieth century stained glass design. This, in turn, will help to facilitate the sensitive preservation of mid-twentieth century stained glass.
