Book Synopsis Globalization, Culture and Inequality in Asia by : Timothy J. Scrase
Download or read book Globalization, Culture and Inequality in Asia written by Timothy J. Scrase and published by Trans Pacific Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplating globalization from a sociological perspective, it is without doubt that a major site for social, political, economic and cultural change in the new millennium lies in the Asian region. The chapters in this book seek to describe and analyze a number of key aspects of social and cultural change wrought by globalization in the Asian region. The underlying theme in the book is the multi-dimensional way in which globalization - in the form of ideas, practices and technology - have introduced social inequalities in specific contexts. In particular, the book examines how inequality has been reproduced, challenged and theorized in Asia by the advent of globalizing culture. Written by experienced and established scholars, the study provides both theoretical explanation, and discussion and analysis of empirical data, from a range of social, cultural and political-economic perspectives and draws on studies from several countries in the region.
Book Synopsis Artisans and Cooperatives by : Kimberly M. Grimes
Download or read book Artisans and Cooperatives written by Kimberly M. Grimes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With new markets opening up for goods produced by artisans from all parts of the world, craft commercialization and craft industries have become key components of local economies. Now with the emergence of the Fair Trade movement and public opposition to sweatshop labor, many people are demanding that artisans in third world countries not be exploited for their labor. Bringing together case studies from the Americas and Asia, this timely collection of articles addresses the interplay among subsistence activities, craft production, and the global market. It contributes to current debates on economic inequality by offering practical examples of the political, economic, and cultural issues surrounding artisan production as an expressive vehicle of ethnic and gender identity. Striking a balance between economic and ethnographic analyses, the contributors observe what has worked and what hasn't in a range of craft cooperatives and show how some artisans have expanded their entrepreneurial role by marketing crafts in addition to producing them. Among the topics discussed are the accommodation of craft traditions in the global market, fair trade issues, and the emerging role of the anthropologist as a proactive agent for artisan groups. As the gap between rich and poor widens, the fate of subsistence economies seems more and more uncertain. The artisans in this book show that people can and do employ innovative opportunities to develop their talents, and in the process strengthen their ethnic identities. Download or read book Tourism in South-East Asia written by Michael Hitchcock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South-East Asia has developed rapidly as a tourist destination, but what are the effects of this growth upon the peoples of the region? How far is it possible to control the impact of tourism whilst also supporting the industry's role in the region's development? This book, first published in 1993, attempts to answer these questions by providing a critical analysis of the nature of tourism as it has developed in the area. It questions commonly held assumptions about tourism both from a western perspective and from the point of view of policy makers in the region. It explores central issues such as the impact of tourism on the environment, culture and the economy, placing it within an historical and political context in order to assess the implications of current developments. The contributors use case studies from a variety of countries on such aspects as the sex industry, dream holidays and rural handicrafts, assessing tourist perceptions, both domestic and international, and policy decisions. By taking a long-term perspective it should provoke thought on the ways to develop sustainable tourism for the future.
