Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "In this report we discuss in detail pragmatic problems posed by the integration of AI with conventional software engineering, and within the framework of current Ada technology. A major objective of this work has been to begin to bridge the gap between the Ada and AI software cultures. The report summarizes survey results from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group for ADA (SIGAda) AI Working Group (AIWG), highlighting lessons learned and sample applications. An interesting observation is that a large percentage of AI code is procedural by nature and that better productivity rates are achieved by using Ada; also, efficiency is much better when compared to traditional AI languages. Although we show favorable results on the use of Ada technology for the implementation of AI software, a total integration remains difficult at the conceptual level. There are some impediments to a completely satisfactory solution, but only a few restrictions are more intrinsically related to the current Ada standard (Ada83); these, however, are being dealt with in the next revision known as Ada9X."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author examines the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence systems as they integrate and replace traditional social structures in new sociocognitive-technological environments. She discusses issues related to the integrity of researchers, technologists, and manufacturers as they design, construct, use, and manage artificially intelligent systems; formalisms for reasoning about moral decisions as part of the behavior of artificial autonomous systems such as agents and robots; and design methodologies for social agents based on societal, moral, and legal values. Throughout the book the author discusses related work, conscious of both classical, philosophical treatments of ethical issues and the implications in modern, algorithmic systems, and she combines regular references and footnotes with suggestions for further reading. This short overview is suitable for undergraduate students, in both technical and non-technical courses, and for interested and concerned researchers, practitioners, and citizens.

Driven mostly by Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods (one of the most difficult, but also the most promising modern AI algorithms), autonomous systems help create self-learning and self-optimising systems, ranging from simple game-playing agents to robots able to efficiently act in completely new environments. Based on in-depth study of more than 100 projects, Andrzej Wodecki explores RL as a key component of modern digital technologies, its real-life applications to activities in a value chain and the ways in which it impacts different industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of our analysis of the suitability of the Department of Defense (DOD) programming language Ada for Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. As ada is expected to become a major programming language in the 1980's with widespread usage in both the military and commercial sectors, a reasonable question to be asked is whether Ada could benefit the efforts of AI system development or transfer. A large store of language and environment support tools are expected to appear within the next several years. The ability for the AI community to avail themselves of such technology would serve the needs of both AI systems developers and the ultimate recipients of the developed technology. In this report, we consider the suitability of the Preliminary Ada Language Specification either as a language for the development of AI systems or as a language for the transfer of already-developed AI technology. We focus our attention on the language capabilities required to support AI paradigms and their realization in Ada. (Author).

Book excerpt: Understand the real power of AI and and its ability to shape the future for the better. AI For Social Good: Using Artificial Intelligence to Save the World bridges the gap between the current state of reality and the incredible potential of AI to change the world. From humanitarian and environmental concerns to advances in art and science, every area of life stands poised to make a quantum leap into the future. The problem? Too few of us really understand how AI works and how to integrate it into our policies and projects. In this book, Rahul Dodhia, Deputy Director of Microsoft’s AI for Good Research Lab, offers a nontechnical exploration of artificial intelligence tools—how they’re built, what they can and can’t do, and the raw material that teaches them what they “know.” Readers will also find an inventory of common challenges they might face when integrating AI into their work. You'll also read more on: The potential for AI to solve longstanding issues and improve lives Learn how you can tap into the power of AI, regardless of the size of your organization Gain an understanding of how AI works and how to communicate with AI scientists to create new solutions Understand the real risks of implementing AI and how to avoid potential pitfalls Real-life examples and stories that demonstrate how teams of AI specialists, project managers, and subject matter experts can achieve remarkable products. Written for anyone who is curious about AI, and especially useful for policymakers, project managers, and leaders who work alongside AI, AI For Social Good provides discussions of how AI scientists create artificially intelligent systems, and how AI can be used ethically (or unethically) to transform society. You’ll also find a discussion of how governments can become more flexible, helping regulations keep up with the fast pace of change in technology.
