Book excerpt: Reservoir simulation is the most important tool petroleum engineers use to forecast production performance and set production strategies for oil and gas fields. Nonetheless, thorough reservoir simulation is a time consuming process that requires powerful computational capabilities and highly skilled individuals in reservoir engineering, mathematics, and programing. The accuracy of the simulation process is affected by the availability and quality of reservoir characteristics. These characteristics are obtained using different data acquisition methods such as open-hole logging, well testing, and core analysis which is costly and time consuming. Another factor that affects production performance is horizontal and multilateral well configurations. These well completions are used to increases production rate and enhance sweep efficiency. However, the design of horizontal and multilateral wells is a complex task that involves engineering and economic constraints.This thesis demonstrates the development of artificial expert systems that are not only capable of forecasting, but also robust in multilateral well design and reservoir evaluation. The study covers a wide range of well completions and shale gas reservoirs properties. Using artificial neural networks (ANN), the developed approach delivers forward-looking and inverse-looking solutions to relate between reservoir characteristics, well configurations, and production performance. Production Performance Expert System forecasts the gas rate and cumulative gas production of a given well completed in a shale gas reservoir, and thus it is categorized as a forward-looking solution. The average error of the results generated by the first system is 6.5%. The second expert systems provides an inverse-looking solution to propose multilateral well design given a target production of a specific reservoir. Well design parameters are produced within an average error of 5%. The third and final system is capable of predicting shale reservoir properties by analyzing the production performance of a horizontal or multilateral fishbone well completion. The developed system is capable of predicting reservoir characteristics with an average error of 4.5% from the target data. The developed set of expert systems is expected to reduce the long hours required for excessive computations, which are typical in reservoir simulators. In addition, it can reduce costs of reservoir evaluation by working as an auxiliary tool to expensive well tests, logging operations, and core analysis. However, it is worth mentioning that these expert systems do not replace conventional reservoir simulators, rather they help in enhancing the decision making process by making educated estimations of reservoir properties and basic designs of multilateral wells to be used in history matching and field development or infill drilling strategies.A graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed to offer user accessibility to the aforementioned artificial expert systems. It provides easy execution of codes and neural networks without requiring knowledge of the background mechanism. This interface allows the user to provide their own input data to simulate any desired scenario within the dataset limits. The results of each case are shown graphically or numerically.

Well testing has been one of the important tools to estimate reservoir characteristics such as permeability and reservoir thickness. The purpose of this study is to develop an expert system that can estimate reservoir characteristics based on constant flow rate pressure transient data from horizontal wells located in shale gas reservoirs.A commercial compositional reservoir simulator CMG-GEM was used in this study. An isotropic square reservoir model with one lateral well at the center was built. The model utilized stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) approach to represent the fractured zone of the reservoir. The SRV zone was more prolific than the rest of the reservoir due to its higher permeability and smaller fracture spacing. 37 x 37 reservoir blocks configuration was selected to use in the model after performing a grid block sensitivity analysis. Since this study requires training of the expert system, large number of data need to be generated. 15 reservoir and well completion parameters were selected as variables in specified ranges. Several MATLAB scripts were created to randomize the input variables and to build thousands of simulation models. The pressure transient data were collected in a numerical table after each model ran.The expert systems included seven Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The ANNs were all generated by using MATLAB ANN Toolbox. The ANNs were classified into forward ANN and inverse ANN. The forward ANN was able to predict pressure transient data, while the inverse ANN was capable of predicting reservoir properties.During the final stage of this study, five graphical user interfaces (GUI) were developed. The GUIs allow the user to input required parameters, and to view results in numerical and graphical formats.

Book excerpt: Multi-stage hydraulically fractured horizontal wells (MFHWs) are currently a popular method of developing shale gas and oil reservoirs. The performance of MFHWs can be analyzed by an approach called Rate transient analysis (RTA). However, the predicted outcomes are often inaccurate and provide non-unique results. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to couple Bayesian Algorithms with a current production analysis method, that is, rate transient analysis, to generate probabilistic credible interval ranges for key reservoir and completion variables. To show the legitimacy of the RTA-Bayesian method, synthetic production data from a multistage hydraulically fractured horizontal completion in a reservoir modeled after Marcellus shale reservoir was generated using a reservoir (CMG) model. The synthetic production data was analyzed using a combination of rate transient analysis with Bayesian techniques. Firstly, the traditional log-log plot was produced to identify the linear flow production regime, which is usually the dominant regime in shale reservoirs. Using the linear flow production data and traditional rate transient analysis equations, Bayesian inversion was carried out using likelihood-based and likelihood-free Bayesian methods. The rjags and EasyABC packages in statistical software R were used for the likelihood-based and likelihood-free inversion respectively. Model priors were based (1) on information available about the Marcellus shale from technical literature and (2) hydraulic fracture design parameters. Posterior distributions and prediction intervals were developed for the fracture length, matrix permeability, and skin factor. These predicted credible intervals were then compared with actual synthetic reservoir and hydraulic fracture data. The methodology was also repeated for an actual case in the Barnett shale for a validation. The most substantial finding was that for all the investigated cases, including complicated scenarios (such as finite fracture conductivity, fracturing fluid flowback, heterogeneity of fracture length, and pressure-dependent reservoir), the combined RTA-Bayesian model provided a reasonable prediction interval that encompassed the actual/observed values of the reservoir/hydraulic fracture variables. The R-squared value of predicted values over true values was more than 0.5 in all cases. For the base case in this study, the choice of the prior distribution did not affect the posterior distribution/prediction interval in a significant manner in as much as the prior distribution was partially informative. However, the use of noninformative priors resulted in a loss of precision. Also, a comparison of the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) and the traditional Bayesian algorithms showed that the ABC algorithm reduced computational time with minimal loss of accuracy by at least an order of magnitude by bypassing the complicated step of having to compute the likelihood function. In addition, the production time, number of iterations and tolerance of fitting had a minimal impact on the posterior distribution after an optimum point--which was at least one-year production, 10,000 iterations and 0.001 respectively. In summary, the RTA-Bayesian production analysis method implemented in relatively easy computational platforms, like R and Excel, provided good characterization of all key variables such as matrix permeability, fracture length and skin when compared to results obtained from analytical methods. This probabilistic characterization has the potential to enable better understanding of well performance, improved identification of optimization opportunities and ultimately improved ultimate recovery from shale gas resources.

Since conventional history matching involves manual input, most guidelines suggest a simplified model be used, and only the parameters that influence the outcome and those with the highest uncertainty be changed (Carlson, 2003). However, even with this simplification, the process of history matching still consumes a considerable amount of time. Moreover, as the complexity of the reservoir increases, the time required to perform a successful history match increases as well. After achieving a satisfactory history match, one is set to perform forecasting studies. Forecasting is the ultimate objective of a simulation study. In later times, if the prediction is not in agreement with the observed data, history matching parameters need to be re-tuned. After this tune-up process, predictions should be close enough to the observed data. When observed data deviates from predictions, reservoir engineers then have the daunting task of identifying the causes of such deviation in a rather short period of time to ensure that necessary preventive measures can be implemented promptly.Expert systems can be used to assist reservoir engineers with refining and re-evaluating their history matching parameters. In this proposed study, an artificial expert system is developed, which in turn provides the reservoir engineer with a good set of starting points to pick the history matching parameters for a newly created reservoir simulation model. The same expert system can also help in fine-tuning the parameters if the model is already history matched. For complex models, the expert system can use new production data to improve the history matching parameters. Once the prediction process is under way, the expert system can be expanded into a suit of diagnostic tools to detect changes in reservoir responses that might occur over time. These problematic changes in responses can be caused by the alteration of the area around the well or from other geomechanical changes that take place within the reservoir. These developed tools are triggered when the well production profile behaves unexpectedly. The first tool looks into the possibility of a developed skin around the well may have caused the decline in production. Another tool evaluates whether a set of perforations have been plugged. If the reservoir has hydraulically fractured wells, an expert tool is used to analyze the fracture effective permeability and length to see if they match the specifications of the fracture job. Two more tools are used to assess two geomechanical features of the reservoir. The first one can help figure out if the production changes are caused by the reservoir compaction and the second looks into the possibility of tarmat breakage at the base of the hydrocarbon column. The last tool looks to identify areas of the reservoir where there is a possibility of having natural fractures. Coupled with the engineer's expertise, the expert system can be extended to more complex scenarios. It is worth noting that each expert system is explicitly developed for a specific reservoir and is not interchangeable with other reservoirs.The last part of this research involves developing graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that provide user-friendly interfaces for the engineers to input and edit the data and generate numerical and graphical results. It will also enable the engineers to validate the results with the numerical reservoir simulator.In this research, the assisted history matching expert system has shown its ability to bring the reservoir properties used by the reservoir simulation model closer to their original values. In addition, it has helped in reducing the uncertainty ranges for the different parameters used in the history matching process. The diagnostic expert systems have also shown the strength of the artificial intelligence protocol applied in these systems. For the forward solution part, all diagnostic expert systems show excellent results and thus can be safely utilized as proxies to the reservoir simulator. The backward solution part is more difficult to achieve. However, except the tarmat breakdown expert system, all diagnostic expert systems have shown satisfactory accuracy as identified by the user. The tarmat breakdown expert system, performed very well when only one area of the tarmat layer is broken whereas it struggled when another area of the tarmat broke at a later time.

However, they can also be biased and misleading the engineer to the wrong diagnosis and eventually to the wrong analysis. Since the superposition time functions involve rate as essential constituent, the superposition time is affected greatly with rate issues. Production data of shale gas wells are usually subjected to operating issues that yield noise and outliers. Whenever the rate data is noisy or contains outliers, it will be hard to distinguish their effects from common regime if the superposition time functions are used as plotting time function on log-log plots. Such deceiving presence of these flow regimes will define erroneous well and reservoir parameters. Based on these results and with the upsurge of energy needs there might be some costly decisions will be taken such as refracting or re-stimulating the well especially in tight formations. In this work, a simple technique is presented in order to rapidly check whether there is data bias on the superposition-time specialized plots or not. The technique is based on evaluating the kernel of the superposition time function of each flow regime for the maximum production time. Whatever beyond the Kernel-Equivalent Maximum Production Time (KEMPT) it is considered as biased data. The hypothesis of this technique is that there is no way to see in the reservoir more than what has been seen. A workflow involving different diagnostic and filtering techniques has been proposed to verify proposed notion. Different synthetic and field examples were used in this study. Once the all problematic issues have been detected and filtered out, it was clear that whatever went beyond the KEMPT is a consequence of these issues. Thus, the proposed KEMPT technique can be relied on in order to detect and filter out the biased data points on superposition-time log-log plots. Both raw and filtered data were analyzed using type-curve matching of linear flow type-curves for calculating the original gas in-place (OGIP). It has been found that biased data yield noticeable reduced OGIP. Such reduction is attributed to the early fictitious onset of boundary dominated flow, where early false detection of the drainage boundaries defines less gas in-place occupied in these boundaries.

It can also be a textbook for students in petroleum and chemical engineering curricula and in training departments for a large group of companies.

Reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively assigning reservoir properties, recognizing geologic information and uncertainties in spatial variability. This book contains 19 chapters, and begins with the geological characterization of sandstone reservoir, followed by the geological prediction of shale distribution within the Prudhoe Bay field. The subsequent chapters are devoted to determination of reservoir properties, such as porosity, mineral occurrence, and permeability variation estimation. The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. This topic is followed by papers concerning reservoir simulation, parameter assignment, and method of calculation of wetting phase relative permeability. This text also deals with the role of discontinuous vertical flow barriers in reservoir engineering. The last chapters focus on the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on oil reservoir. Petroleum engineers, scientists, and researchers will find this book of great value.

Book excerpt: Energy markets are already undergoing considerable transitions to accommodate new (renewable) energy forms, new (decentral) energy players, and new system requirements, e.g. flexibility and resilience. Traditional energy markets for fossil fuels are therefore under pressure, while not-yet-mature (renewable) energy markets are emerging. As a consequence, investments in large-scale and capital intensive (traditional) energy production projects are surrounded by high uncertainty, and are difficult to hedge by private entities. Traditional energy production companies are transforming into energy service suppliers and companies aggregating numerous potential market players are emerging, while regulation and system management are playing an increasing role. To address these increasing uncertainties and complexities, economic analysis, forecasting, modeling and investment assessment require fresh approaches and views. Novel research is thus required to simulate multiple actor interplays and idiosyncratic behavior. The required approaches cannot deal only with energy supply, but need to include active demand and cover systemic aspects. Energy market transitions challenge policy-making. Market coordination failure, the removal of barriers hindering restructuring and the combination of market signals with command-and-control policy measures are some of the new aims of policies. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect research papers that address the above issues using novel methods from any adequate perspective, including economic analysis, modeling of systems, behavioral forecasting, and policy assessment.
