Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the entomologist all insects have six legs; the layman tends to use the term "insect" to include the eight-legged spiders and mites. All these creatures are correctly classified as arthropods. Many thousands of the hundreds of thousands of recognised species of arthropods are found in the human environment-domestic, occupational and rec reational. Those species which are obligate parasites of man, the human scabies mite and the head and body lice, produce familiar clinical syndromes. They remain important in medical practice and have been the subject of a great deal of recent research. This is beginning to throw much light on the immunological mechanisms which largely determine the reactions of the host. Dr. Alexander has provided a detailed survey of this work. The wasps, bees, ants and other Hymenoptera which may sting man in self-defence can cause painful, even fatal reactions. The recent work on this important subject has also been thoroughly reviewed. Every dermatologist of experience will admit that he sees many patients in whom he makes a diagnosis of "insect bites", if he has the confidence to do so, or of "papular urticaria" or "prurigo" when he lacks such confidence, mainly because he is at a loss to know which arthropod is likely to be implicated. In his survey of the enormous literature in the entomological, public health and dermatology journals Dr. Alexander has provided an invaluable guide in which the solutions to these clinical mysteries can be sought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthropods as pests in crops, vectors of diseases, pollinators, and natural enemies of pests are of huge economic importance. They affect livestock, human health and food supplies around the world. This unique book examines and reviews how light and colour can be used to enhance pest management in agricultural and medical applications by manipulating the optical responses of arthropods. Arthropods use optical cues to find food, oviposition sites and to navigate. Light also regulates their diurnal and seasonal activities. Plants use optical cues to attract or deter various species of arthropod. In this book, an international team of experts show how light can be used successfully to attract, arrest, confuse and deter arthropods as well as to disrupt their biological clocks.

This major reference examines the biology, classification and control of arthropods that cause disease in animals and humans. The morphology, taxonomy and phylogeny of fleas, flies, lice, mites, midges, mosquitoes and ticks are described, with descriptions of their medical and veterinary significance, diseases they cause, insect distribution and global disease spread. Updated, developed and reworked from Doug Kettle's seminal Medical and Veterinary Entomology, this major new reference presents vital information in encyclopedia format, with alphabetical entries and an extensive index to make key facts easy to find. This new treatment of the subject provides accessible content and up-to-date research, illustrated by line drawings and color photographs.

Book excerpt: The current book takes a unique integrated approach combining both ectoparasite biology and veterinary dermatology. As to the latter concept, ectoparasitic infestations of domestic animals have overt clinical consequences requiring a distinct approach for diagnosis and treatment. Thus, the diagnostic techniques of skin disorders in domestic animals have been presented here. Since the book is directed primarily at the non-entomologists, to improve its logical structure and comprehensibility, it has been deemed appropriate to abridge some of the more involved entomological databases, particularly in relation to arthropod classification and phylogenetics and ecology of arthropod ectoparasites. The book aims to introduce the phylogeny, ecology, biology, epidemiology, dermatology, pathology, diagnosis, and control of arthropod ectoparasites of domestic animals. In addition, a brief morphological description of these parasites is also presented. This book is of importance for the students and practitioners of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, and applied animal sciences.
