Una profesional tan entregada a su tarea de trabajar y pulir la piedra hasta extraer de ella la forma que llevaba dentro, según el concepto, el pensamiento y la reflexión interior de la autora, desde el mismo momento en que tenía el material pétreo ante sus ojos. “No necesito boceto previo para empezar a trabajar”, decía María Antonia con frecuencia, “lo llevo dentro o lo veo nada más tener el mármol ante mí”. Efectivamente, ella se dejaba guiar por una u otra veta de la piedra, más clara o más oscura y según su consistencia, y, como diría Michelangelo Buonarroti, extraía de ella la escultura sepultada o secreta. Ella sabía lo que había dentro. (...) Le escuché en más de una ocasión que ella era la representante o continuadora del arte taino de Puerto Rico, su país natal, si bien lo hacía de manera libre, abierta y siguiendo la estética del tiempo que le había tocado vivir. Sentía una gran admiración y devoción por el arte taíno al que dedicó su tesis doctoral, que finalmente no pudo leer ante tribunal público universitario, porque le sorprendió la muerte. María Antonia Román Prado era una artista visual perfeccionista, exigente consigo misma y dotaba de una espiritualidad a su obra que se observa en el recorrido pausado de la misma. Su escultura no es abrupta en su ejecución, se revela suave y sin aristas, por lo que invita a un tacto silencioso. Una de sus mayores satisfacciones estuvo cuando pudo mostrar buena parte de sus esculturas juntas en el Centro Washington Irving de Madrid, dependiente de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos de América en 1992. El arte puertorriqueño y la cultura taína es un libro fruto del estudio e indagación para la tesis doctoral, que María Antonia no pudo llegar a leer, porque su fallecimiento en 2017 lo impidió. Celebremos hoy sus reflexiones sobre el arte puertorriqueño y la cultura taína, que ella tanto amó.
