Book Synopsis Curating at the Edge by : Kate Bonansinga
Download or read book Curating at the Edge written by Kate Bonansinga and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located less than a mile from Juárez, the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for Visual Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso is a non-collecting institution that serves the Paso del Norte region. In Curating at the Edge, Kate Bonansinga brings to life her experiences as the Rubin’s founding director, giving voice to a curatorial approach that reaches far beyond the limited scope of “border art” or Chicano art. Instead, Bonansinga captures the creative climate of 2004–2011, when contemporary art addressed broad notions of destruction and transformation, irony and subversion, gender and identity, and the impact of location on politics. The Rubin’s location in the Chihuahuan desert on the U.S./Mexican border is meaningful and intriguing to many artists, and, consequently, Curating at the Edge describes the multiple artistic perspectives conveyed in the place-based exhibitions Bonansinga oversaw. Exciting mid-career artists featured in this collection of case studies include Margarita Cabrera, Liz Cohen, Marcos Ramírez ERRE, and many others. Recalling her experiences in vivid, first-person scenes, Bonansinga reveals the processes a contemporary art curator undertakes and the challenges she faces by describing a few of the more than sixty exhibitions that she organized during her tenure at the Rubin. She also explores the artists’ working methods and the relationship between their work and their personal and professional histories (some are Mexican citizens, some are U.S. citizens of Mexican descent, and some have ancestral ties to Europe). Timely and illuminating, Curating at the Edge sheds light on the work of the interlocutors who connect artists and their audiences.

Download or read book Latinx Art written by Arlene Dávila and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Latinx Art Arlene Dávila draws on numerous interviews with artists, dealers, and curators to explore the problem of visualizing Latinx art and artists. Providing an inside and critical look of the global contemporary art market, Dávila's book is at once an introduction to contemporary Latinx art and a call to decolonize the art worlds and practices that erase and whitewash Latinx artists. Dávila shows the importance of race, class, and nationalism in shaping contemporary art markets while providing a path for scrutinizing art and culture institutions and for diversifying the art world.

Download or read book Serial No. 381713 written by and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At an age when social, sexual, and educational explorations are at their highest point, the lives of Israeli teenage girls are interrupted. Trained to become soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces, a rigorous institution where individuality comes second to nationalism, these new recruits pledge, "I hereby swear...to devote all my strength, and even sacrifice my life, to the defense of the country and the freedom of Israel." They then enter a two-year period in which they will change from girls to women, from adolescents to adults under a militaristic, masculine environment engaged in daily war and conflict. Photographer Rachel Papo, who was Serial No. 3817131 during her service in the Israeli Air Force from 1988-1990, reveals these young girls caught in transient moments of self-reflection and uncertainty, as if stuck in a state of contradiction. Rather than portraying the soldier as heroic, confident, or proud, Papo's photographs reveal the soldier and the teenage girl in constant negotiation, caught between two extremes: a soldier who lives on an army base surrounded by hundreds just like her, but underneath her uniform, there is an individual who wishes to be noticed. Serial No. 3817131, Papo's first book, explores the personal, complex, and delicate spectrum of emotions inherent in all adolescents, showing the vulnerable side of the righteous solider.

Download or read book Exile written by Moe Zoyari and published by . This book was released on 2012-06-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note by Pulitzer Prize Winner, Kim Komenich, 2012: " In editing the photos for this book I had to continually remind myself that Mohammad is 26 years old and that this amazing set of images is only his first dispatch from the planet earth. When I talk to students about the world's great photojournalists and documentary photographers I tell them that often there is personal experience that has redefined the photographer's vision. There is a moment when a new set of tools becomes available. There are the learned mechanical skills-- composition, sensitivity to light and color and moment-- techniques that can be sharpened through practice and perseverance. Then there are the almost mystical, poetic skills that have their home in the heart. "Moe" began taking newspaper and wire service photos in Iran in his teens and like most photojournalists, he covered events and celebrities on deadline for a living. Moe's "defining experience" came after photos he took in 2007 of a public flogging in Iran were published around the world. Upon learning of his imminent arrest he fled into exile. And in exile he has remained. He has worked hard. Rarely does the skill set of a young photographer combine the poetic ability to capture a moment of intimacy in a grand vista with the people skills necessary to strike up an intimate photographic relationship with a room full of strangers. There are a few of Moe's early wire agency images here, but they serve to help define the photographer he has become. Where before he photographed big events and sought to capture "their" experience, his images are now about "our" experience, as witnessed by a compassionate, empathetic fellow traveler."

Book Synopsis 100 Painters of Tomorrow by : Kurt Beers
Download or read book 100 Painters of Tomorrow written by Kurt Beers and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting new global survey of largely unknown talent, selected by an international jury Painting is enjoying a remarkable creative renaissance in the twenty-first century, with many of the world’s leading artists now working in this most enduring and seductive of media. 100 Painters of Tomorrow is the culmination of a new project, initiated by curator Kurt Beers and Thames & Hudson, to find the 100 most exciting painters at work today. This major publication introduces and presents the work from a global cast of painters selected by an international panel featuring some of the most prominent names in contemporary art. The resulting volume offers an intelligent snapshot of the best new talent in painting from across the world, gathered through an open call for submissions that drew over 4,300 applications. Open to any artist using paint as their primary medium, the submissions guidelines specified no age limit, but each of the selected artists has gained professional recognition in the last five years through their education, gallery representation, or in the production of a significant body of work. In addition, more than 100 of the world’s leading art schools were directly invited to participate, nominating recent graduates to submit their applications. The book presents high-quality images of the rising stars’ work, along with essential biographic information and quotations from the artists.
