Book excerpt: An extremely rich Belgian collection of Art Nouveau articles is behind the adventure leading to the conceiving of this book. Michel Draguet, in eight reference-filled chapters, guides the reader through the period between the end of the last century and the beginning of the present one, the herald of deep changes inspiring an art which, stemming from the symbolist and decadent instances, unfolds like a page of literature. The articles of applied arts figuring in the book have the flavor of the poetry of Baudelaire and Mallarme, recall the microcosm of Proustian interiors and take us back to an atmosphere steeped in the contributions of several arts, from dance to painting and sculpture, wherein the search for new techniques clearly does not play merely a minor role. Between literature and industry, a portent of the new century striding in, "Treasures of Art Nouveau" gives us back the savor of a world fully aware of the winds of change. Michel Draguet, Doctor in Philosophy and Literature and Agrege in Philosophy and Literature. Professor at the Universite libre of Brussels and qualified researcher at the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique. Expert in the history of turn-of-the-century painting. Curator of several exhibitions and author and co-author of books, among which: "Bruxelles fin de siecle" (Paris, Flammarion, 1994); "Khnopff ou l'ambigu poetique" (Paris, Flammarion, 1995 - The 1996 Arthur Merghelynck Award of the Royal Academy of Belgium); "Mendelson "(Brussels, 1995); "Chronologie de l'art du XXe siecle" (Paris, Flammarion, 1997) and "Rops Cabinet de dessins" (Paris, 1998). Editor of the writings on art by Baudelaire and Mallarme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The set owned by Sir George Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery. Scharf has annotated and interleaved these pages with manuscripts and letters received, newspaper clippings, and printed pamphlets, in effect producing an unpublished corrected and enlarged second edition. In a fair copy of a letter to John Murray (1855 March 16), Scharf cites numerous errata and inaccuracies in Waagen. Scharf had access to the great historic homes and private collections of art in England and based his revisions on first-hand knowledge. Newspaper clippings record the loss, dispersal or sale of the collections originally surveyed by Waagen. Letters received from connoisseurs, collectors, and artists include Lord Cowper, Lady Louisa Egerton, Frederic George Stephens, W.A. Scott Robertson, George Redford, the Earl of Ellesmere, R.S. Holford, and Sir Charles Lock Eastlake. Printed materials include "A Catalogue of the Orleans' Italian pictures ..." (London, 1798) and the text of Scharf's paper on the paintings in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1862 Nov. 20). The first volume of the set contains a dedication to Scharf from the translator, Lady Eastlake.

This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Odyssey of China's Imperial Art Treasures traces the three-thousand-year history of the emperor's imperial collection, from the Bronze Age to the present. The tortuous story of these treasures involves a succession of dynasties, invasion and conquest, and civil war, resulting in valiant attempts to rescue and preserve the collection. Throughout history, different Chinese regimes used the imperial collection to bolster their own political legitimacy, domestically and internationally. The narrative follows the gradual formation of the Peking Palace Museum in 1925, then its hasty fragmentation as large parts of the collection were moved perilously over long distances to escape wartime destruction, and finally its formal division into what are today two Palace Museums-one in Beijing, the other in Taipei. Enlivened by the personalities of those who cared for the collection, this textured account of the imperial treasures highlights magnificent artworks and their arduous transit through politics, war, and diplomatic reconciliations. Over the years, control of the collections has been fiercely contested, from early dynasties through Mongol and Japanese invaders to Nationalist and Communist rivals- a saga that continues today. This first book-length investigation of the imperial collections will be of great interest to China scholars, historians, and Chinese art specialists. Its tales of palace intrigue will fascinate a wide variety of readers.
