Examining the extent and sources of knowledge of Spanish art in the British Isles during an age of increasing contact, particularly in theaftermath of the Peninsular War, it contains contributions by leading scholars, including reprints of three essays by Enriqueta Harris Frankfort, to whose memory this book is dedicated. Focusing on Spanish art from the Golden Age to Goya, these studies chart the growth in understanding and appreciation of the Spanish School, and its punctuation by controversies and continuing distrust of religious images in Protestant Britain, as well as by the successive `discoveries' of individual artists - Murillo, Velázquez, Ribera, Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya. The book publishes important new research on art importation, collecting and dealing, and discusses the increase in access to andscholarship on works of art, including their reproduction through both traditional prints and copies and the newly invented photographic methods. So far, the research on British art in the 20th century – in comparison to the research on modern French, German, Russian, Italian and American art – has been taken up only sporadically. The greatest number of Polish publications have concernedpost-war British art, while there is almost no publication devoted to interwar art. No research on Irish art has been conducted so far. Thus, the studies on modern Irish art seem to be an important novelty. The widest range of previous interests has concerned the art of the Polish emigration circle since World War II. Like Polish artistic colonies in Rome in the 19th century, in Munich in the second half of the 19th century, and in Paris since the late 19th century, the Polish emigration colony in London with numerous organizations, galleries and magazines has drawn attention as an important element of Polish art and Polish artistic tradition. Particular attention should be paid to a group of studies devoted to works by Jewish artists or artists of Jewish origin from Poland. The volume is divided into Introduction and 6 sections: (1) Polish–British Art Relations before 1945, (2) Contemporary British Art, (3) Polish Émigré Art in Great Britain after 1945, (4) Contemporary Polish–British Art Relations, (5) Irish Art,(6) British Art and the World. Thus, a certain image of British art of the 20th century is outlined, as seen from afar. The book is structured chronologically, with focus on selected issues. Subsequent parts present phenomena of British art, sometimes followed by the account of Polish reactions.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to study the revival of cottage crafts that accompanied the growing interest in an arts and crafts movement in Britain and Ireland. It focuses upon three regional craft associations, organised, sponsored, and promoted by British women: the Donegal Industrial Fund (founded 1883 by Londoner Alice Rowland Hart); the Irish Industries Association (founded 1886 by Ishbel, Countess of Aberdeen and supported by a number of Irish and British aristocrats); and Highland Home Industries (revived in 1886 by the Marchioness of Stafford, later Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland). The three examples have been selected because although like many of their counterparts, the patrons endorsed a relationship between work and morality, they also recognised the significance of consumption and market. Their patrons understood the value of spectacle, the usefulness of advertising, and the efficacy of exhibition. The emphasis is upon how and why they adopted these strategies to promote and sell cottage crafts for the benefit of rural workers. The introduction provides an overview of home arts and industries in Britain as part of the late-nineteenth century craft revival and examines the difference between the large English-based Home Arts and Industries Association and other home arts organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Book excerpt: London-born and reared, Art O'Brien's journey from wealthy electrical engineer to leader of Irish militant nationalism in London was, by any measure, quite extraordinary. This book uses the life of O'Brien (1872-1949) as a central axis on which to construct an analysis of Irish nationalism in London from 1900 to 1925. O'Brien was a member of the Gaelic League, Sinn Féin, the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and the Irish Self-Determination League of Great Britain. He also established a prisoner relief organization and had significant involvement in gun-running for the 1916 rising and the War of Independence. Appointed London envoy of Dáil Éireann in 1919, he was a close confidant of Michael Collins, Arthur Griffith, and Éamon de Valera, and was a mediator in various peace initiatives between the British and Sinn Féin during 1920 and 1921. Yet, despite his extensive contribution to the Irish revolution, little is known of O'Brien's activities. Based on rigorous research in British and Irish archives, this book recounts the vital contribution O'Brien made to the prosecution of the Irish revolution. It also recounts the hitherto little-known story of Irish cultural, political, and militant nationalism in London between 1900 and 1925.
