To present the most important works of art in the most natural arrangement and let them work their own results, is the purpose of art history. To this end there is only one thing more important than abundant illustration in the hand-book itself, viz., faithful study of all the originals, casts, photographs, and copies which can be made accessible outside of it. The specific aim of the present book has been to present such an amount and choice of illustration as have never been previously attempted in similar works, and as a class-book to present the sub ject in such a way that the use of still further illustration for the combined class will be easy and desirable. The Soule Photograph Company of Boston have made it their mission to supply, at very cheap cost, complete sets of photographic illustrations in all depart ments of art history, and a choice from their catalogue, suggested by the unillustrated notices of this book, will greatly add to its usefulness. For the definitions of technical terms and for the pronunciation of foreign words, attention is called to the Index. Pronunciation and definition have generally been entered in the text once, but without subsequent repetition. The recent increase in college enrollment. One of the most out standing and significant recent educational tendencies in this country is the notable increase in school enrollment. It is true that this tendency has existed and grown steadily during the whole history of our coun try, but it has become much more marked during the past generation. Especially since the World War. So that it has been a major factor in creating what many consider our outstanding educational problem Of today. Although this increase has occurred in all the major divisions of our educational system, it has been unusually rapid in high school and college.1 The figures in the most recent statistical summary of education issued by the United States Bureau of Education2 reveal this fact very clearly. At present there are in round numbers four million students in our secondary schools and one million in our institutions of higher learning. In both cases. The five years beginning in 1920 Show a greater increase, both absolute and relative, than any previous period of similar length. The number of students in secondary schools in pro portion to our population is now about six times as great as in 1890 and the number of those in colleges more than three times as great. Ex pressing the same facts otherwise, in 1890 approximately one-fourth of 1 per cent of the whole population or 1 per cent Of the total school en rollment consisted of college students, whereas in 1924 more than three fourths of 1 per cent Of the whole population or about per cent of the total school enrollment was in college.
