It's a brisk, clearly stated survey, from cave painting to conceptual art, that doesn't talk down to its reader and doesn't assume a prior art education. Dynamic design, page-length essays, frequent sidebars, and abundant illustrations make this compendium a browser's delight. 300 illustrations, one third in color.

Book excerpt: As ludic and non-authoritarian as John Baldessari's art, this new monograph on the "father of Conceptual art" is dedicated to his practice as an artist and a teacher, and the many ways in which both practices intertwine in his life.Having been trained as an arts educator, John Baldessari is today renowned for his work as much as for his innovative post studio class at CalArts, Los Angeles, where he has formed many generations of artists and participated in shaping the West Coast art scene.Visually organized in alphabetical order, Learning to Read from John Baldessari -- which accompanies a retrospective of his work at Museo Jumex, Mexico City, a comprehensive essay on the artist's approaches to art making and teaching, a biography of the artist as a teacher, artworks reproduced thematically, and many stories and anecdotes told by former students such as Liz Craft, Ed Henderson, Matt Mullican, Tony Oursler, David Salle, about their years at CalArts, and the uniqueness and serious playfulness of their formation.Emphasizing Baldessari's works in which language, task making, and learning processes are tackled, this publication highlights what the artist describes as the central function of art making: to communicate in a way that people can understand.Published with Museo Jumex, Mexico City.Accompanies the exhibition, Learning to Read from John Baldessari at Museo Jumex, Mexico City (11 November 2017 - 08 April 2018).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drawings and watercolors handsomely illustrated in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of Fernando Botero's work in this media, which has seldom been reproduced. An introductory essay by Prof. Edward J. Sullivan of New York University, and biographical notes complete the catalogue and provide a framework for these superb but less well-known works by Botero. With consummate technical ability, this important twentieth century artist has revived the use of ancient materials: sanguine, charcoal, sepia pencil, wash and ink. Most of his drawings are executed on paper, sometimes on canvas, with great attention paid to the quality of the support. Botero uses a variety of drawing techniques. Some pieces are preparatory drawings for entire compositions - usually quick sketches of a drawing or sculpture - but the majority are independent works of art that rarely, if ever, repeat a composition the artist has executed in oils. Botero draws with affection. Each stroke of the pen or brush is applied with the knowledge that it will create another small but important part of the rich world populated by sensuous figures that has evolved throughout the years in the imagination of the artist. These drawings compel us to confront Botero's art and personality even more directly than in his paintings. In examining them with care, we are privileged to receive a glimpse into the creative mind and fertile imagination of this master. Looking at his drawings we can almost follow the genesis of the artist's ideas. It is as if we were seated at his side in intimate dialogue with him, watching his hand create the simulacra of his inner imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious study explores how important darkness--artificial darkness--was, as an actual technology, in producing not just photographs but visual novelties and experiments in cinema in the nineteenth century. The study plays out against a backdrop of urban history, where most scholars have focused on the growth of artificial light and the electrification of cities. Elcott’s study challenges that approach. In considering zones of darkness, it ranges from the sites of production (darkrooms, studios) to those of reception (theaters/cinemas/arcades) that shaped modern media and perceptions. He argues that, in the nineteenth century, the avant-garde was often less interested in the filmed image than in everything surrounding it: the screen, the projected light, the darkness, the experience of disembodiment. He argues that darkness has a history separate from night, evil, or the color black, and has a specifically modern manifestation as a media technology. We are all aware of the "velvet light trap” in photography, but at the heart of this book are technologies of darkness crucial to cinema that were commonly known as "the black screen,” but have, over time, faded from the storied discourse.

Book excerpt: The work of contemporary Colombian artist Fernando Botero is well known throughout the world. His exaggerated rendering of fleshy human, animal, and still-life figures has become an unmistakable characteristic of his style. This beautifully illustrated volume is one of the few to focus solely on Botero's sculpture, which provides an ideal medium for his exploration of space and volume. The book showcases works in small and medium format as well as the famous monumental works that have made Botero the leading sculptor of the 20th century.
