Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the people in the Netherlands with an active interest in cultural heritage and the performing arts, and who prefer to leave these forms of culture alone? Have the size and composition of the groups of 'culture-lovers' and 'culture-leavers' changed since the end of the 1970s? These are the central questions in this concise descriptive study. It considers not only visits to cultural institutions such as museums and concert halls, but also the consumption of culture via the media and active cultural participation through the amateur arts. Trends in total participation are presented against the background of continuity and change in cultural output. More women than men have an interest in cultural activity, and more better-educated than less well-educated people. The level of cultural interest among the better-educated has declined, but thanks to the rising education level this has not (yet?) been translated into a lower overall level of cultural interest. Among middle-aged people, the main growth area has been in their interest in popular culture. At the end of this report a number of scenarios from earlier studies on the position of culture in the midst of increasing competition for people's leisure time are subjected to scrutiny.

Book excerpt: This edited volume offers an in-depth exploration of Dutch media art from 1985 onwards from many different perspectives. Through early access to the Internet, state subsidies and dedicated institutions and festivals, a vivid counter-cultural environment and a cosmopolitan artistic and intellectual scene the Netherlands hold a unique position in regards to the development of media art. 0Introduced by four chapters that retrace the main events and actors (governmental institutions, festivals and other art venues, artists and curators) of media art over the past 30-plus years, the volume is divided into five parts that examine different aspects of the media art scene. The inception and subsequent developments of video and digital art, as well as their critical and institutional reception, the hacker/squatter/maker scene in all its different guises, activist stances (particularly in regards to mass media), combined with the material, cultural and infrastructural conditions that allowed the expansion of these art forms, explorations and expressions, are all thoroughly examined in generously illustrated essays, written by artists, scholars, curators and critics. Attention is also given to CD-ROM and net art, VJing, sonic arts, television, robotics and live cinema, mapping a complex and fascinating artistic geography at the borders of technology, politics and counter-cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together, for the first time, twenty-two chapters on arts marketing and audience development. Edited and curated to be accessible to both academics and those working in the cultural sector, the book provides an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the traditions, philosophies and approaches which underpin our ideas about increasing audiences for the arts. Covering a range of topics and international perspectives, it tells the story of how arts marketing and audience development came to be such an important management practice in the cultural sector. This edited volume discusses the relationship of audience development to arts management and cultural policy and outlines the foundational arguments which have led to contemporary debates around everyday creativity and cultural democracy. By providing vital insights from both the theory and practice of arts marketing and audience development, the book will serve as an excellent reference work for researchers. Simultaneously, this book will also be an invaluable read for those working in cultural leadership and arts management roles. The chapters in this book were originally published in various Routledge journals.
