Book excerpt: Summary: Atelier Van Lieshout, Boundary Umlimited, DUS Architects, Haas & Hahn, Nicoline van Harskamp, Anne Holtrop and Bas Princen, Wouter Klein Velderman, Krijn de Koning, NIO Architects and Onix: the artists and architects in this catalogue of the eponymous exhibition in the Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato seek a direct relationship with reality, investigating and reproducing it, representing and criticizing it.Their approach is increasingly trans-disciplinary: architects utilize media and supports typical of the arts, while artists investigate urban realities in three-dimensional architectural installations. 0Exhibition: Centro per l'arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato, Italy (16.12.2012-10.3.2013)

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: In the second half of the 18th century, philosophy provided the fundamental characteristics of architechture. The architects of the 19th century then introduced the empirical comparative study of buildings. This phenomenon has usually been regarded exclusively in terms of historicism, but this is to underestimate the fact that they were architects. The problems for which they sought solutions did not belong to the past, but were part of their own age or the future. The architecture of the past was, to the 19th-century architect, significant to a large degree as a silent witness of a bygone era - a representation of beauty. Historical architecture provided study material for their inquiries into the aesthetic "laws" that they hoped would give the 19th century a splendid contemporary architecture. The art of building, as a way of visibly edifying society, was the most important of all the arts, with architectural theory showing the way to this lofty purpose. This book takes this as a starting point. Focusing on place as well as time, the text discusses the Dutch architects who contributed to this idea, discussing several of the most important, but ultimately seeing their activities, not as the cause, but the expression of movements that continuously changed the face of architecture. The particularly "Dutch" nature of architecture took "visual beauty" to result from the visible success of technical intelligence and creativity rather than philosophy and aesthetics. The grand-19th century themes discussed in the book are, the author suggests, somewhat "un-Dutch", originating as they did from an idealist, intellectual tradition.

Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.

Book excerpt: The Netherlands is a relatively small country, but it has a large international impact when it comes to design. This book looks at the decades from 1890 to 1940, when modern Dutch design emerged and crystallized into a number of coherent movements. While designers in the Netherlands during this period were familiar with and influenced by ideas and trends originating outside the country, they created a distinctively Dutch design culture that remains vital in the twenty-first century.Modern Dutch Design includes four essays that examine important, and sometimes overlooked, currents that ran through this half century, as Dutch designers responded to powerful social, economic, and political changes. With more than 250 illustrations, drawn mostly from the collection of The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, it offers compelling visual evidence of the rich diversity of Dutch design in these decades.

Book excerpt: "Auke van der Woud reveals how, caught in the tide of expansion and change sweeping across Europe at the time, Dutch architects, patrons and builders fought to consolidate their country's history and cultural identity through architecture. He shows that rival factions, in an attempt to sequester the mystique of the Dutch Golden Age, advocated various ideas and theories about Gothic, Classical and Dutch Renaissance architecture, but that in the end architectural practice made architectural theory irrelevant. Extensively illustrated with period photographs, many by the pioneer of Dutch photography, Jacob Olie, this book is an excellent introduction to the development of nineteenth-century architecture in The Netherlands."--BOOK JACKET.
