Book excerpt: This antiquarian volume contains a concise yet comprehensive guide to the various enemies of the orchard, with information on how to prevent and eradicate them. Written in clear, plain language and profusely illustrated, this informative guide will be of considerable utility to the orchard-owner or agriculturalist, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Although old, much of the information contained herein is still very much relevant today, making this both a great addition to collections of antiquarian literature of this ilk and a useful, practical handbook. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this text now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned new introduction.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Season's Work on Arsenical Poisoning of Fruit Trees Summary of Orchard Investigations: It will be seen from the above descriptions that in the regions like the Pajaro Valley, the Rogue River and Hood River Valleys, where little or no irrigation water is used, and where if anything the orchards suffer from lack of water, and the soils are comparatively free from alkali, the troubles under consideration are entirely unknown. That in every district in which the alkali is present in sufficient amounts to appear on the surface and where water is sufficiently abundant to cause seepage in the lower districts, that more or less of these root rot or collar rot conditions occur. In bad cases of seep age whole orchards are stricken within a year or two, oftentimes after they have borne a number of heavy crops. This may be due to a gradual rise of the ground water, or to the gradual extension down ward of the roots of the trees. In milder cases, only here and there a tree is affected and these often linger along for a number of years, sometimes in a dry year, partially recovering, only to be stricken again in a wet one. If there is any perceptible slope to the ground the trouble will usually be more marked on the lower end of the irrigation furrows. Where alkali is evidently the cause of the death of the trees, no variety seems to be exempt, all being equally afiected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arsenic is likely the most talked-about metalloid in the modern world because of its toxic effects on both animal and plants. Further, arsenic pollution is now producing negative impacts on food security, especially in many south Asian countries. Since plants are a major food source, their adaptation to As-rich environments is essential, as is being informed about recent findings on multifarious aspects of the mechanisms of arsenic toxicity and tolerance in plants. Although numerous research works and review articles have been published in journals, annual reviews and as book chapters, to date there has been no comprehensive book on this topic. This book contains 19 informative chapters on arsenic chemistry, plant uptake, toxicity and tolerance mechanisms, as well as approaches to mitigation. Readers will be introduced to the latest findings on plant responses to arsenic toxicity, various tolerance mechanisms, and remediation techniques. As such, the book offers a timely and valuable resource for a broad audience, including plant scientists, soil scientists, environmental scientists, agronomists, botanists and molecular biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigators have long recognized the importance of certain elements, commonly called "minerals," in the diet of humans and animals and in the soil that supports plants, in that these elements are essential for the life or optimum health of the organisms. Deficiencies of 20 to 24 elements in animals and man and of 13 to 18 elements in plants have been recognized. At the same time, an understanding of the responses of these organisms to the insult of toxic concentrations of these and other elements also has been of interest. More recently, concern has arisen regarding the effects of an organism's exposure to the more subtle chronic and subchronic concentrations of certain elements that industrial and other human activities are releasing into the environment.
