Its availability and sanitary safety is highly connected with the health and economy status of population. Burden of disease due to polluted water is a major public health problem throughout the world. Many pollutants in water streams have been identified as toxic and harmful to the environment and human health, and among them arsenic, mercury and cadmium are considered as high priority ones. Providing population with safe drinking water became the priority and at the same time a big challenge for the modern society. Many funding agencies in various countries have assigned a high priority to the envir- mental security and pollution prevention. UN, being one of them, launched the “International Decade for Action: Water for life 2005–2015. ” Therefore, today’s political and social climate presents an important opportunity to implement principles of sustainable development and to preserve resources essential for future life. This process requires interdisciplinary approach; it is critically important to stimulate interactions between medical doctors, chemists, physicist, materials scientists, engineers and policy makers, which are already experienced in their specific areas. It is also our ethical obligation to preserve existing water resources and existing eco systems enhancing their biodiversity. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop “Water Treatment Te- nologies for the Removal of High-Toxicity Pollutants” took place on September 13–17, 2008 in Košice, Slovak Republic.

Book excerpt: Coagulation and Flocculation in Water and Wastewater Treatment provides a comprehensive account of coagulation and flocculation techniques and technologies in a single volume covering theoretical principles to practical applications. Thoroughly revised and updated since the 1st Edition it has been progressively modified and increased in scope to cater for the requirements of practitioners involved with water and wastewater treatment. A thorough gamut of treatment scenarios is attempted, including turbidity, color and organics removal, including the technical aspects of enhanced coagulation. The effects of temperature and ionic content are described as well as the removal of specific substances such as arsenic and phosphorus. Chemical phosphorus removal is dealt with in detail, Rapid mixing for efficient coagulant utilization, and flocculation are dealt with in specific chapters. Water treatment plant waste sludge disposal is dealt with in considerable detail, in an Appendix devoted to this subject. Invaluble for water scientists, engineers and students of this field, Coagulation and Flocculation in Water and Wastewater Treatment is a convenient reference handbook in the form of numerous examples and appended information.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is one of the most essential requirements for living being to survive because 70,Äì80% of the mass of most living bodies consists of water and various mineral and organic salts. Water is also most important component of our environment. Large amount of water is used in various industries or commercial level or domestic level and finally effluent water is loaded with large amount of pollutants such as organic chemicals (surfactants, dyes, phenols etc.), inorganic hazardous heavy metals (As in present case) microbes (bacteria, fungi etc.) pollutants particulate etc. Arsenic is a natural metalloid chemical that may be present in groundwater and surface water gets polluted, hence, aquatic life of plants and animals is disturbed and cause abnormal growth and various diseases, hence, short term or long term changes occurs in ecosystem. Hence, treatment of wastewater is essentially required before discharge effluent wastewater into ponds or lagoons, drains and rivers. Arsenic is one such element that contaminates the environment as reported in several countries. The largest population at risk is in Bangladesh followed by India (West Bengal). Arsenic is familiar as silent killer because dissolved in water, it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, yet consumption of relatively small doses of this element in its most toxic forms can cause rapid and violent death. It is a human carcinogen in water over a wide range of pH values, having harmful effects on both human health and environment, even at low concentration. Because of this effect, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) set the arsenic standard for drinking water at .010¬†ppm to protect consumers served by public water systems. Ingestion only poses health problems if a dangerous amount of arsenic enters the body. Then, it can lead to cancer, liver disease, coma, and death. There is no effective treatment for arsenic toxicity. Only the removal of arsenic from aqueous system can prevent the toxicity. A great deal of research over recent decades has been done to lower the concentration of arsenic in drinking water and still there is a need to develop ecofriendly techniques. Existing major arsenic removal technologies include oxidation, adsorption, precipitation, coagulation and membrane separation. This book chapter presents a systematic description of current status of research in the area of arsenic removal from contaminated water and comparison of all technologies available with more emphasis on adsorption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present book on Arsenic has painted a small portion of the vast canvas of water pollution by focusing on the specified areas of the Gangetic plain. In India, the firstcase of arsenic contamination came to light in 1980 in West Bengal. Subsequently many chemists and biologists started examining arsenic content in water in various parts of Bihar and my team started work in some new areas of Gangetic plain in Bhagalpur district. Switching to groundwater for potable water resulted in decrease of bacterial contamination on one hand and on the other this resulted in the vast population being affected by arsenic contaminated water. This book deals with some safer techniques of arsenic removal. The arsenic removal technologies are based on solar oxidation, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, adsorption, ion exchange and biological processes. In coagulation micro-filtration Fe(III) and Al(III) salts are added to form arsenic-sorbing flocs which is removed by membrane filtration. This method increases Fe(III) and Al(III) in water. Adsorbents like activated alumina, ferric hydroxides, iron oxide coated sand and activated carbon have been used in columns to remove arsenic from aqueous medium. Thus many methods of arsenic removal have been discussed. The search for low-cost technologies has directed towards bentonite deposits of Rajmahal hills. Bentonite minerals are smectite group of mineral having 2:1 dioctahedral structure. Though these minerals are abundant inmost of the countries of the world, Rajmahal hill bentonites have not been studied for many of its important properties as yet. Our research team have collected bentonite minerals from different parts of the hill and worked on removal of heavy metals, dyes and arsenic from aqueous medium. Efforts have been made to use different derivatives of bentonite minerals for remediation of heavy metals including arsenic. A comparative study of remediation potential has been done. All the useful experimental data have been incorporated in the book to have a clear understanding of the subject. Apart from this, the ability of agricultural solid wastes e.g maize stem powder, rice husk have also been tested for removal of arsenic inaqueous medium. In addition, researches have focused on the ability of biological materials to accumulate the toxicants. The major advantages of biosorption are low-cost, high efficiency and minimum use of chemicals. Latest techniques of analyses of arsenic both qualitative and quantitative have been discussed in the book. Analysis of arsenic has also been done by I.C.P and A.A.S. Possible causes of arsenic contamination in ground water, geochemistry and mechanism of entry in the Gangetic plain have also been discussed to make readers understand in the simplest manner. General chemistry of arsenic and its compounds have been discussed in chapter 1 and arsenic binding to DNA causing cancer with possible mechanisms have been incorporated in to the book after a careful and thorough review of journals. Arsenicosis problems, photographs of affected regions and hills have been added with a view to have a glimpse of the worsening situation at the ground level. I hope this book will be valuable for teachers, students and researchers pursuing advanced research on arsenic mitigation. The suggestions from any corner are most welcome and would be incorporated in the book for further improvement."
