Book excerpt: That Indonesia’s ongoing occupation of West Papua continues to be largely ignored by world governments is one of the great moral and political failures of our time. West Papuans have struggled for more than fifty years to find a way through the long night of Indonesian colonization. However, united in their pursuit of merdeka (freedom) in its many forms, what holds West Papuans together is greater than what divides them. Today, the Morning Star glimmers on the horizon, the supreme symbol of merdeka and a cherished sign of hope for the imminent arrival of peace and justice to West Papua. Morning Star Rising: The Politics of Decolonization in West Papua is an ethnographically framed account of the long, bitter fight for freedom that challenges the dominant international narrative that West Papuans' quest for political independence is fractured and futile. Camellia Webb-Gannon’s extensive interviews with the decolonization movement’s original architects and its more recent champions shed light on complex diasporic and intergenerational politics as well as social and cultural resurgence. In foregrounding West Papuans’ perspectives, the author shows that it is the body politic’s unflagging determination and hope, rather than military might or influential allies, that form the movement’s most unifying and powerful force for independence. This book examines the many intertwining strands of decolonization in Melanesia. Differences in cultural performance and political diversity throughout the region are generating new, fruitful trajectories. Simultaneously, Black and Indigenous solidarity and a shared Melanesian identity have forged a transnational grassroots power-base from which the movement is gaining momentum. Relevant beyond its West Papua focus, this book is essential reading for those interested in Pacific studies, Native and Indigenous studies, development studies, activism, and decolonization.

Included in the book are free verse and short form poetry, consisting of haiku, tanka, haiga, tankart, tanka prose and tanka sequences. I've used my own photography, some of which I've digitally edited. Morning Star is the title given to our Blessed Mother in the Litany of Loreto. Just as the morning star announces the coming of the day, appearing in the sky and reflecting the light of the sun, our Blessed Mother, so strong and bright, shows us the way to her Son. Mary Davila is one of those rare talents who writes both haiku and tanka, and is also an excellent photographer. Her haiga and tanka art are exquisite. I also love that she is not afraid to write about her faith. Her faith shines through in poetry that is uplifting, spiritual and full of empathy. Ken Slaughter former vice president Tanka Society of America Davila shares her spiritual journey in Morning Star by employing images and words that effectively play off one another. She helps us to see beautiful stained glass windows, to hear the toll of a church bell, to feel the ambience of stars, and to ponder Life's questions and search for answers. A charming collection. Susan Constable, Tanka Editor for cattails from the balcony I touch the moon... my prayers just an arm's length from heaven Mary Davila, Ribbons, Fall 2015 Mary Davila is the embodiment of kindness and joy, which is perfectly captured in her writing. I am so proud and excited that through her hard work and effort, she pushed forward to her goal: to share her beautiful literary talent with the world. I am blessed and grateful to call her my friend. Congratulations...which are so well deserved!! Peggee Templeton Creative guide/organizer of the former Creative Expression Writers Group

Book excerpt: It's a typical summer night in August. Literature professor Arne and artist Tove are with their children at a summer house in southern Norway. Their friend Egil is staying nearby. Kathrine, a priest, is on her way home from a seminar, journalist Jostein is out on the town, and his wife, Turid, an assistant nurse, is on the night shift. Above them all, a huge star suddenly appears blazing in the sky. No one knows what this phenomenon might be. Is it a star burning itself out? But why, then, has no one seen it before? Is it a brand new star? Life goes on, but not quite as before, as strange things start to happen on the fringes of human existence. 'The Morning Star' is a novel about what we do not understand, about great drama seen through the ordinary lens of life. But first and foremost, it is about what happens when the dark forces in the world are set free.

Book excerpt: In the second Maidels of Morning Star novel by fan-favorite author Charlotte Hubbard, the five friends who have teamed up to transform an abandoned barn into an Amish marketplace are enjoying the success of their fledgling enterprise. What's even more remarkable is the gift the business bestows upon each of these unmarried women--the unexpected blessing of love as the new school teacher and the bishop find strength in their growing bond. Leaving Flaud's Furniture to teach at the community's new school is a joy for Lydianne Christner. Old Order Amish, but new to Morning Star, she's grateful that the congregation trusts her with the position--but she panics when handsome Bishop Jeremiah Shetler asks about the life she left behind. If anyone discovers the secret she's hiding, she would, quite rightly, be shunned. A widower, Bishop Jeremiah admires young Lydianne's youthful energy and skill with the children. He's also curious about her past, and the burden he senses on her heart. When his request to court her is refused, he's stung, and lonelier than ever. It isn't until a crisis prompts a tearful Lydianne to confess to him that Jeremiah is faced with a choice that requires all of his faith--and teaches them both that love and forgiveness go hand in hand.
