This throws him into a world of violence and horror that challenges his own humanity and his personal moral limits. Two questions lie at the heart of Sammi’s story. How does a world full of ways to end our species keep turning with us on it? When life hides purpose from you, what are you willing to do to find one?

Book excerpt: The West Bank Barrier is expected to be completed in 2010. Declared illegal by the United Nations International Court of Justice, this network of concrete walls, trenches, and barbed-wire fences could permanently redraw one of the most disputed property lines in the Middle East--the Green Line that separates Israel and the West Bank. To Israel the "security fence" is intended to keep Palestinian terrorists from entering its territory. But to Palestinians the "apartheid wall" that sliced through orchards and houses, and cuts off family members from one another, is a land grab. In this comprehensive book, Backmann not only addresses the barrier's impact on ordinary citizens, but how it will shape the future of the Middle East. Though it promises security to an Israeli population weary of terrorism, it also is responsible for the widespread destruction of Palestinian homes and farmland; with its Byzantine checkpoint regulations, it has also severely crippled the Palestinian economy; and, most urgent, the barrier often deviates from the Green Line, appropriating thousands of acres of land, effectively redrawing the boundary between the West Bank and Israel. Backmann interviews Israeli policy makers, politicians, and military personnel, as well as Palestinians living throughout the West Bank, telling the stories not only of the barrier's architects, but also of those who must reckon with it on a day-to-day basis on the ground. With bold, brilliant, and often impassioned reportage, A Wall in Palestine renders the West Bank Barrier--its purpose, its efficacy, its consequences--as no book before.

Book excerpt: Heidi Davis had a loving husband and five beautiful children, but also she loved to drink. She justified her alcohol dependency until it was too late, and she woke up to find herself lost and full of despair and loneliness. Then a light shone in the darkness. It was her teenage daughter Ariel, who pulled her back from the ledge and inspired Heidi to be the mother she had always wanted to be. But just seven months into her sobriety, tragedy struck and the unthinkable happened. Ariel's Light is the true story of Heidi's road to redemption amidst a mother's unimaginable heartbreak. This is not just another story about alcoholism, not just a testimonial, but an inspirational testament to the fact that truly anything is possible when you are willing to listen to the quiet yet powerful voice from within.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Red Island House, Andrea Lee’s brilliant, outrageous collection of short stories confronts identity, desire, colliding cultures, and self-discovery. In vivid prose infused with wicked irony, award-winning author Andrea Lee takes us on a dazzling international journey into the hearts and minds of a number of extraordinary women—intelligent, cosmopolitan, and fiercely independent—who, with wit and style, grapple with questions of identity in an increasingly connected world where everyone has become, in some way, a foreigner. In “The Birthday Present,” a seemingly conventional American wife explores the wilder shores of marital devotion by giving her Italian husband an outrageous gift. “Winter Barley” is the account, alternately lyrical and perverse, of the brief love affair in Scotland between an elderly European prince and a thoroughly modern New England beauty half his age. And in the collection’s title story, “Interesting Women,” a woman on vacation in Thailand reflects with wry detachment on the confessional relationships that spring up between women (“another day, another soul laid bare”), before falling into one herself, which culminates in a hilarious and absurd odyssey through the jungle. Lee’s beautifully crafted stories offer a rare combination: a sensual evocation of the moment, and profound insight into the underlying struggles—of gender, race, and class—that continue to shape our world. Critically acclaimed when it was first published, this collection is ready to be embraced by a new generation of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens if we abandon the assumption that a person is a discrete, world-making agent who acts on and creates place? This, Monique Allewaert contends, is precisely what occurred on eighteenth-century American plantations, where labor practices and ecological particularities threatened the literal and conceptual boundaries that separated persons from the natural world. Integrating political philosophy and ecocriticism with literary analysis, Ariel’s Ecology explores the forms of personhood that developed out of New World plantations, from Georgia and Florida through Jamaica to Haiti and extending into colonial metropoles such as Philadelphia. Allewaert’s examination of the writings of naturalists, novelists, and poets; the oral stories of Africans in the diaspora; and Afro-American fetish artifacts shows that persons in American plantation spaces were pulled into a web of environmental stresses, ranging from humidity to the demand for sugar. This in turn gave rise to modes of personhood explicitly attuned to human beings’ interrelation with nonhuman forces in a process we might call ecological. Certainly the possibility that colonial life revokes human agency haunts works from Shakespeare’s Tempest and Montesquieu’s Spirit of the Laws to Spivak’s theories of subalternity. In Allewaert’s interpretation, the transformation of colonial subjectivity into ecological personhood is not a nightmare; it is, rather, a mode of existence until now only glimmering in Che Guevara’s dictum that postcolonial resistance is synonymous with “perfect knowledge of the ground.”

Book excerpt: After Pilot Babel's unexpected death, his brother, Porter Babel, and Ariel Murmade, Pilot's mistress, use the experience as a catalyst to their spiritual awakening. Not knowing where to turn for comfort, they rely on each other for laughter, and turn to look inside themselves for the first time. Both Porter and Ariel were raised in turbulent homes, causing much of their emotional and psychological anguish as adults. After Pilot's suicide, they realize for the first time that they must take care of themselves instead of relying on a sibling or lover for fulfillment. Porter struggles to overcome his vicious and domineering mother's influence over his adult life. Ariel struggles to suppress the sense of worthlessness created by being disowned as an infant by her drug-dependent mother. In the end, they find out through careful thinking and hard work that all things desired are already in place-long before they are ever sought out. Affluence is a thought-provoking examination of the struggle to overpower the negative influences from the past to realize the richness that is buried within.

Book excerpt: “A fascinating book about how platform internet companies (Amazon, Facebook, and so on) are changing the norms of economic competition.” —Fast Company Shoppers with a bargain-hunting impulse and internet access can find a universe of products at their fingertips. But is there a dark side to internet commerce? This thought-provoking exposé invites us to explore how sophisticated algorithms and data-crunching are changing the nature of market competition, and not always for the better. Introducing into the policy lexicon terms such as algorithmic collusion, behavioral discrimination, and super-platforms, Ariel Ezrachi and Maurice E. Stucke explore the resulting impact on competition, our democratic ideals, our wallets, and our well-being. “We owe the authors our deep gratitude for anticipating and explaining the consequences of living in a world in which black boxes collude and leave no trails behind. They make it clear that in a world of big data and algorithmic pricing, consumers are outgunned and antitrust laws are outdated, especially in the United States.” —Science “A convincing argument that there can be a darker side to the growth of digital commerce. The replacement of the invisible hand of competition by the digitized hand of internet commerce can give rise to anticompetitive behavior that the competition authorities are ill equipped to deal with.” —Burton G. Malkiel, Wall Street Journal “A convincing case for the need to rethink competition law to cope with algorithmic capitalism’s potential for malfeasance.” —John Naughton, The Observer

Book excerpt: In the year 1264 three young people come into information that the Earth will be destroyed by collision with an interstellar planet in a thousand years. They also learn that in the next year a leading reformer, the father of one of the three, will die in battle, setting back the progress of human history by 400-500 years, a margin great enough to enable people a thousand years later to save Earth. They must cause the battle to go the other way, and use that to launch still greater reforms that will set history on a fast course to planetary defense. Two of the three have superior abilities, but not superpowers. They have revelations, but must work out the details for themselves. They have opportunities that existed in their time and never before or since. In this book the reader will meet many interesting characters, many from history, although as history takes a different course, it also changes the characters and the roles they play.
