Book excerpt: " Follow in the footsteps of one of America's most beloved writers, the immortal Mark Twain, as he circles the globe, performing before dozens of standing-room-only crowds. On July 14, 1895, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, fifty-nine years old and deeply in debt, boarded a night train from Elmira to Cleveland and launched an unprecedented worldwide performance tour. A superb platform entertainer and an international celebrity, Clemens saw the tour as a quick way to make the money he desperately needed to pay his creditors and recoup his fortune, and so he began a journey that took him across North America to Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. One hundred years later, American writer Robert Cooper set out from Elmira in pursuit of Twain, following virtually every step of the legendary writer's itinerary across four continents. In this remarkable feat of biographical recreation, we see Clemens make his way to the smelters, roasting ovens, and smokestacks of Butte, Montana, where pollution was so horrific that not even grass could grow; to Baroda, India, where he examined the gold and silver ornaments of the ruler's elephants and noted their proximity to an utterly destitute village; and to a vermin-infested jail in Pretoria, South Africa, where he lifted the spirits of some of the country's richest men, the imprisoned members of the Reform Committee who had been convicted of treason by the Boer government. We glimpse Clemens the consummate professional, constantly rehearsing his routines so that they would seem completely spontaneous. And we even see Twain the celebrity: railing against late trains and ferries, grumbling about hotel accommodations, and complaining about ill health and the tedium and drudgery of endless one-night stands, all the while basking in the adulation and affection of his audiences, enjoying the all-male camaraderie of club suppers and press conferences, and delighting in meeting the great and powerful of the lands through which he traveled.Drawing upon a wide range of primary sources and first-hand accounts-including Clemens's letters, journal entries, and notes; his comments to local newspapers; the letters of his wife and daughter who accompanied him; and the observations of his tour managers-Robert Cooper has created an utterly absorbing combination of travel writing, social history, character study, and historiography. The first book-length treatment of this heroic journey since Clemens's own century-old narrative, Around the World with Mark Twain is a fascinating account of an extraordinary year in the life of an American icon."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book is a collection of autoethnographies by a diverse group of contributors who describe and theorize about the critical moments in their development as social justice educator/scholars in the face of colonizing forces. Using a rhizomatic approach, the editors' meta-analysis identifies patterns of similarity and differences and theorizes about the exercise of agency in resistance and identity formation. In our increasingly diverse society, Becoming Critical is a wonderful resource for teacher education and sociology of education as it presents an alternative methodological approach for qualitative inquiry. The book contributes to students' understanding of the development of critical theories—especially as they pertain to identities. The contributors make use of the work of critical scholars such as Collins, hooks, Weber, Foucault, and others relevant to the lives of students and educators today.

It documents the tornados, fires, cave-ins, accidents, and explosions that befell the region during that period. Most Clevelanders have heard stories of the Colinwood school fire, the Lorain tornado, the Cleveland Clinic fire, and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey fire; however, over the decades, the true events and the tall tales that followed have become blurred. Some disasters, such as the West 117th Street explosion and the Waterworks Tunnel cave-ins, seem almost completely forgotten. Although tragic, the disasters in this book affected the lives of Clevelanders and often generated changes for the good, which prevented these sorts of tragedies from occurring again. Sadly, in some instances, they did not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In cooperation with Western Reserve Historical Society Euclid Avenue, which runs through the heart of downtown Cleveland, was for 60 years one of the finest residential streets of any city in 19th century America. Showplace of America is the fascinating account of the rise and fall of this elegant promenade, including portrayals of the eminent architects who created its opulent residences and colorful details about the lives of the wealthy people who occupied them. The families who resided within this linear, four-mile neighborhood epitomized Midwestern grandeur in the second half of the 19th century. The 1893 Baedeker's travel guide to the United States labeled it "one of the most beautiful residence-streets in America," as others hailed it "Millionaires' Row," the finest avenue in the west, and the most beautiful street in the world." Modeled after the grand boulevards of Europe, this magnificent neighborhood was distinguished for the prominence of its architects as well as the families who lived there. Local architects Jonathan Goldsmith, Charles W. Heard, Levi T. Scofield, Charles F. Schweinfurth, and Coburn & Barnum and national firms Peabody & Stearns and McKim, Mead & White created houses that were stunning monuments to Cleveland and America's growing prosperity. Ironically, the tremendous success of Cleveland's industry and commerce, which had nurtured the rise of this grand avenue, fostered its fall. Downtown commerce expanded along the avenue at the sacrifice of its leading entrepreneurs' residential have. The houses were demolished as the avenue became what is today--a neglected urban thoroughfare. Photographs and illustrations from the archives of the Western Reserve Historical Society and other repositories are published here for the first time, documenting both the glory and decline of the "showplace of America."
