Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said about people who travel, that they go all over the world, and then return and look more closely at their “own back yard” – their own country. That applied to us even though we had lived in many parts of NSW, Tasmania, ACT, Queensland – and Herman in PNG. Our Around Australia’s Coastline adventure included extra bonuses – destinations to Papua New Guinea, Lombok (Indonesia) and Norfolk Island all of which are considered our neighbours. We believe that cruising is the best way to see Australia as most capital and provincial cities are on the coastal fringe. They emerged from a Colonial past of mainly convict settlements that could only then be reached by sea – and which also made it easier to control such settlements. The inland was unknown and potentially hostile until our overland and seafaring explorers ventured further to rediscover that which the indigenous population had known for 40,000 years or more. European settlements then followed inland. And, of course there is the love Australians have for the coast and the beaches and want to live near these. Besides, cruising has additiional benefits. You only unpack once, travel in luxury and wait for the destinations to turn up! (Although we do consider each cruise ship to be a different destination in itself.) It gives you time to talk to others who have visited these areas before, time to listen to on-board presentations about each destination – and a few warnings. Time to learn new things and eventually better appreciate those new experiences. Why is there so little text? We thought it only necessary to identify places and other things, give a brief description of each place, as they are far between and each evolved extremely differently. For those who want to know more detail – there is always the Internet. And Herman’s 725+ photographs say it all! They show the beauty of places, reveal the unusual, that which depicts the unique “character of a place”, strange things, amusing things, things that the tourist brochures don’t usually depict, and those things that other people rush past and miss altogether. At each destination we took bus tours around the area and to specific destinations. We also did a lot of walking until this became more difficult, and then we used mobility scooters to great advantage – and yes, you can use them on-board ship and ride them into public buildings /areas, galleries, museums, acquariums etc. provided you have appropriate permission. (We have never been refused.) So, come with us and enjoy the photo-log of our experiences... Herman and Pamela Odijk P.S. Oh – and if you think we left our “cousins from across the ditch” New Zealanders out , well we covered them in our previous book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coast is one of our most valuable assets but how is it being treated and what is being done to look after it? COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of this important subject. Interesting case studies are used to illustrate human impact on coastal processes as well as demonstrating the global significance of the coast and the international imperative to manage it properly. COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA introduces the background to the various coastal management systems operating in Australia and illustrates these with 'real world' examples from the different states and territories. Since this book was first published yet another parliamentary inquiry has been added to some 30 years of national inquiries into coastal management, with further calls for national co-ordination. In addition, the Australian government has focused attention on the potential risks of climate change for the Australian coast. Both authors have national and international coastal expertise; significant academic teaching experience in coastal processes and coastal management; coastal planning and policy skills; and have extensive government expertise in coastal management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the entire coast and beaches and barrier systems of Australia. It covers the coastal processes and systems that form and impact Australia's 30.000 km coast, 12.000 beaches and 2750 barrier systems. These processes include geology, geomorphology, climate, waves, tides, currents, sediment supply, as well as coastal ecosystems. The coast is divided into tropical northern and southern temperate provinces, within which are seven divisions, 23 regions and 354 coastal sediment compartments each of which is described in detail in the 34 chapters. Within these systems are the full range of wave through tide-dominated beaches and barriers ranging from cheniers to massive transgressive dune systems together with a range of onshore and longshore sand transport systems. This is an up to date reference for the entire coast, its present condition and likely responses to the impacts of climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are dynamic coastal waterways where salt and fresh water mix. Where River Meets Sea describes the value and status of Australia's 974 estuaries and takes readers on a state-by-state tour describing the health, geography, science, management and ecological functions of these unique coastal waterways. It includes profiles of people and their relationships with estuaries. The book's many photographs, maps, case studies and diagrams will help Australians to better understand, appreciate and wisely use these natural areas. Chapters on natural history, coastal science and management give an understanding of our vast network of pristine and heavily modified estuaries – from isolated tide-dominated estuaries in Australia's tropical north to those shaped by waves in southern, temperate waters. Other chapters show how people use and value coastal catchments and waterways, the impacts of human development on natural ecosystems, and how estuaries can be better managed in future. Where River Meets Sea aims to provide Australians with a deeper appreciation of our coastal waterways that are both vital for our economy and precious to our quality of life. This is a re-issued version of the original work published by the CRC for Coastal Zone Estuary and Waterway Management in 2004,

Book excerpt: From the winner of the ACT Book of the year Award for his first book, The River, comes this celebration of the Australian seascape, from its natural grandeur to the quirky individualism of those who live beside it. It is also the heartfelt and pertinent story of the issues facing our coast today and the resilience of communities at a turning point. Chris Hammer travels the length of the east coast of Australia on a journey of discovery and reflection, from the Torres Strait to Tasmania; from an island whose beach has been lost forever to the humbling optimism of the survivors of Cyclone yasi; from the showy beaches of Sydney to a beautiful village that endures despite the loss of its fishing fleet. This is a relevant, satisfying and highly readable book, imbued with a sense of optimism and humour. Even as new economic imperatives emerge and the shift in our climate becomes apparent, we can revel in the heritage and character of our shores, reminding us why the coast is so important to all of us.
