This test was conducted to confirm the results of the feasibility tests with the proposed final configuration for this modification and also to evaluate both the performance in hover and level flight and the handling qualities throughout the flight envelope. This modification provides an increase in the usable in-ground-effect (IGE) operating envelope and improves the directional control characteristics while maneuvering. The test showed good agreement with the results of the earlier feasibility tests. The maximum safe IGE maneuvering envelope for the tractor tail rotor AH-1G was determined and defined by those conditions of gross weight and density altitude where a 10-percent directional control margin was available in the critical azimuth in a 15-knot wind. Using the same criteria for the standard AH-1G configuration, the difference due to the improved directional control with the tractor tail rotor is equivalent to an additional 1500 pounds payload at the same density altitude.

Book Synopsis Feasibility Test of Tractor Tail Rotor Modification on the Ah-1g Helicopter by : John R. Melton
Download or read book Feasibility Test of Tractor Tail Rotor Modification on the Ah-1g Helicopter written by John R. Melton and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feasibility test of the tractor tail rotor modification of the AH-1G helicopter was conducted near Fort Worth, Texas (550-feet elevation), and Alamosa, Colorado (7535-feet elevation), during the period 7 October to 19 October 1967. This test was conducted to obtain quantitative flight test data to serve as a basis for determining if the tractor tail rotor modification proposed by the contractor for the AH-1G helicopter would correct the directional control problems which currently exist on the AH-1G helicopter with the standard tail rotor configuration. This test revealed that in-ground-effect (IGE) low speed directional control and IGE low speed dynamic directional stability were greatly improved by installation of the tractor tail rotor, . IGE directional control limitations with the standard tail rotor installed were encountered at approximately 8100 pounds gross weight near sea level in previous tests. This test with the tractor tail rotor did not reveal any IGE directional control limitations at approximately 8940 pounds gross weight and near sea level. The test results indicate that additional directional control could be obtained with the tractor tail rotor, if the geometry of the directional control system were changed to negate the adverse effects of the stability and control augmentation system (SCAS) on the ability to obtain full left tail rotor pitch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early stages of helicopter development, when helicopters were able to lift just slightly more than their own weight, the military services were eagerly seeking to obtain a variety of larger, more useful helicopters. The youthful helicopter industry expressed optimism, although at times unrealistic, in its ability to meet the military requirements. The development of the helicopter program within the Marine Corps was sparked by the foresight and imagination of the officers of the period. While early helicopters provided stepping stones for an orderly progression of the program, the slowness of the technical advances and the periods of financial austerity after World War II and Korea prevented the Marine Corps from developing the vertical envelopment concept as rapidly as desired. The program gained interest and momentum, however, as a result of the success of helicopters in Korea. As Lieutenant General Gerald C. Thomas stated: "Indeed, the helicopter gave clear evidence, from its first tactical employment, that a major advance in combat was at hand." This history, which traces the development of helicopters in the Marine Corps from 1946 to 1962, offers a tribute to the creative vision and planning of a handful of Marine officers who conceived of the vertical assault concept in amphibious operations at a time when suitable aircraft to make it work did not exist. The story of the subsequent struggle to procure and develop those aircraft, to refine a doctrine for their employment, and to familiarize the Marine Corps with their use is an interesting and vital part of modern Marine Corps history. The documentary basis for this monograph was primarily the official records of the Marine Corps and Navy Department, but considerable use was made of interviews and correspondence with key individuals involved in all phases of helicopter development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history traces the development of helicopters in the Marine Corps from 1962 to 1973 and is the second in a series of two volumes which between them cover the story of Marines and helicopters from 1946 to the present. In the period covered by this volume, the Marines at last acquired helicopters fully capable of carrying out an amphibious vertical assault, and they further elaborated their helicopter doctrines and tactics. In the Vietnam war, pilots and machines met and surmounted the test of actual combat. The documentary basis for this monograph was primarily the official records of the Marine Corps and Navy Department, but considerable use was made of interviews and correspondence with key individuals involved in all phases of helicopter development. One of the most pervasive characteristics of man is hindsight. It masquerades under many guises: MonĀ day morning quarterbacking, second guessing, and historical writing. When viewed through time, the past becomes distorted. Problems seem simpler, the choices more clear, and the conditions less complex than those of the present. The men who played a part become more heroic or more villainous than they were in life. This volume is an attempt to portray accurately the difficulties faced and the obstacles conquered by the men who developed helicopters in the Marine Corps, so that the Marines of today and the future may meet the challenges of their own times with the same dedication as their predecessors. The men who developed helicopters in the Marine Corps had nothing more to rely on than their knowledge of what had preceded them, intelligence liberally used, and both mental and physical courage. The present-day Marine will be well served if he applies nothing more.
