Book excerpt: Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 1 augments Chapter 2 of Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 1, The Army. This ADRP defines and describes the Army Profession and the Army Ethic. It expands the discussion on the Army Profession's dual character as a military department of the United States Government and, more importantly, a military profession. It identifies two mutually supportive communities of practice of the profession: the Profession of Arms (Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve forces) and the Army Civilian Corps. It establishes the five essential characteristics that legitimize the Army as a profession: trust, military expertise, honorable service, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession. This ADRP defines membership and certification of Army professionals in competence, character, and commitment. It describes Army culture, describes the Army Ethic, and lays the groundwork for developing the moral identity of the Army Profession and its professionals. This publication provides the foundation for Army training and education system curricula on the Army Profession, the Army Ethic, and character development of Army professionals. The principal audience for ADRP 1 is all members of the Army Profession. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. All photographs in this publication are from Department of Defense photographic archives available online at DefenseImagery.mil and associated Army Web pages. ADRP 1 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), United States Army Reserve (USAR), and Army Civilians unless otherwise stated. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure their decisions and actions comply with applicable United States, international, and, in some cases, host-nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See Field Manual 27-10.) Terms for which ADRP 1 is the proponent publication (the authority) are marked with an asterisk (*) in the glossary. Definitions for which ADRP 1 is the proponent publication are boldfaced in the text. The proponent of ADRP 1 is the United States Army Combined Arms Center. The preparing agency is the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE), United States Army Combined Arms Center.

Book excerpt: This publication, Army Doctrine Reference Publication ADRP 1, The Army Profession, includes seven chapters and two appendixes. Chapter 1 discusses the nature of professions, explains why the Army is a profession, and introduces the essential characteristics of the Army Profession (trust, honorable service, military expertise, stewardship and esprit de corps). Chapter 2 provides the doctrine on the Army Ethic, including our shared identity as Trusted Army Professionals and our supporting roles as honorable servants, Army experts, and stewards of the Army Profession. The chapter includes discussion of the moral-principles that guide our decisions and actions in conduct of the mission, performance of duty, and all aspects of life. Chapter 3 describes trust as the foundation of our relationship with the American people who rely on the Army to ethically, effectively, and efficiently serve the Nation. Within the Army Profession, trust is the organizing principle that supports cohesive teamwork. The Army Profession develops Soldiers and Army Civilians to exercise mission command in honorable service in defense of the Nation. Chapter 4 discusses honorable service, an essential characteristic of the Army Profession, as support and defense of the Constitution, the American people, and the national interest in a manner consistent with the Army Ethic. Chapter 5 describes military expertise as an essential characteristic that provides ethical design, generation, support, and application of landpower, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission, in the right way, in defense of the American people. Chapter 6 recognizes that stewardship, an essential characteristic, is the responsibility of Army Professionals to strengthen the Army as a profession and to care for the people and resources entrusted to us by the American people. Stewardship provides for the long-term readiness and resilience of our people and organizations. Chapter 7 provides a discussion of esprit de corps, an essential characteristic of our profession that denotes our collective ethos of camaraderie within cohesive teams. Esprit de corps is embedded in the Army culture of trust and is carried on through customs, courtesies, and traditions. Appendix A expands on the discussion of the Army culture. Appendix B restates the oaths, creeds, and norms of conduct. As trusted Army professionals-Soldiers and Army Civilians-we are honorable servants of the Nation, Army experts, and faithful stewards of the people, other resources, and profession entrusted to our care. By our oath, we are morally committed to support and defend the Constitution. This duty requires a foundation of trust with the American people, reinforced as the Army Profession contributes honorable service, military expertise, and stewardship with courageous esprit de corps. Within the Army Profession, Army professionals earn and sustain trust by demonstrating character, competence, and commitment. We make right decisions and take right actions that are ethical, effective, and efficient.

"Batteries last hours, books last decades. Get the print edition!" The central idea of an army is known as its doctrine, which to be sound must be based on the principles of war, and which to be effective must be elastic enough to admit of mutation in accordance with change in circumstances. In its ultimate relationship to the human understanding this central idea or doctrine is nothing else than common sense-that is, action adapted to circumstances. J. F. C. Fuller The Foundations of the Science of War Every profession develops a unique body of knowledge. For the Army Profession, this body of professional knowledge is doctrine. United States Army doctrine is about the conduct of operations by Army forces in the field (and to a limited extent the guidelines for training for operations). Doctrine is the body of professional knowledge that guides how Soldiers perform tasks related to the Army's role: the employment of landpower in a distinctly American context. Doctrine establishes the language of the profession. Just as physicians must remain proficient and current regarding the body of medical knowledge, Army professionals must remain proficient and current in doctrine. The lives of the men and women who make up the Army-not to mention the security of the state-rely on all Soldiers and leaders to be proficient in the Army's body of professional knowledge: doctrine. Doctrine is dynamic and changing based on lessons learned in current operations and training, adaptive enemies, and changes in force structure, technology, and social values. This publication provides the basic information necessary to understand Army doctrine and the ways it changes. It clarifies why various constructs exist and how they all fit together. It is a guide for professionals about the language of the profession. Soldiers, leaders, and anyone wishing to understand the functionality of the U.S. Army must understand what Army doctrine is, what its purpose is, how it is organized, and why the information in doctrine is important. The precursor to this understanding is a definitive text on the why of Army doctrine - a doctrine primer. Chapter 6 STEWARDSHIP OF THE ARMY PROFESSION Chapter 7 ESPRIT DE CORPS--OUR WINNING SPIRIT Appendix A THE ARMY CULTURE AND THE ARMY ETHIC Appendix B OATHS, CREEDS, AND NORMS OF CONDUCT Foreword Our Nation's founders created a republic in which citizens of character work together to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty. As a result of their vision, decisions, and actions our Nation is a model of freedom and democracy throughout the world. Protection of our way of life requires constant vigilance. Each generation inherits not only the rights and privileges of being an American, but also the responsibility to defend the Constitution, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Since 1775, our Army's vital, enduring role has been to fight and win our Nation's wars. By design, our Army has a dual nature. It is both a military department of government and a military profession. Both are essential to accomplish the mission. However, it is the Army Profession that forges the special bond of Trust and confidence with the American people. The Army Profession is defined by its essential characteristics: Trust, Honorable Service, Military Expertise, Stewardship, and Esprit de Corps. The members of the Army Profession, Soldiers and Army Civilians, create and strengthen the Army culture of Trust. We pursue a noble calling and contribute Honorable Service as a partner within the joint community and other government services that dedicate themselves to defending the Nation. At the same time, we are citizens whose Character, Competence, and Commitment exemplify the ideals espoused by the Army Ethic. In living by and upholding the Army Ethic, we are Trusted Army Professionals.

These principles reflect decades of experience and validated scientific knowledge. An ideal Army leader serves as a role model through strong intellect, physical presence, professional competence, and moral character. An Army leader is able and willing to act decisively, within superior leaders' intent and purpose, and in the organization's best interests. Army leaders recognize that organizations, built on mutual trust and confidence, accomplish missions. Every member of the Army, military or civilian, is part of a team and functions in the role of leader and subordinate. Being a good subordinate is part of being an effective leader. Leaders do not just lead subordinates-they also lead other leaders. Leaders are not limited to just those designated by position, rank, or authority.

This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Manual (FM) 3-90 Volume 1 Change 1 contributes to the Army and joint community by providing guidance on the conduct of the offense and defense. It describes both combat-tested tactics and procedures that have been modified to exploit emerging Army and joint offensive and defensive capabilities. FM 3-90-1 expounds on the doctrinal fundamentals established in Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 3-90. ADRP 3-90 must be read before reading FM 3-90-1, since that is where doctrine for the conduct of offensive and defensive tasks and the art and science of tactics is found. FM 3-90-1 addresses the basic tactics associated with the conduct of offensive and defensive tasks. The principal audience for FM 3-90-1 is all members of the profession of arms. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as a joint task force or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. FM 3-90-1 focuses on the organization of forces, minimum essential control measures, and general planning, preparation, and execution considerations for each primary offensive and defensive task. It is the common reference for all students of the art and science of tactics, both in the field and the Army school system. The offensive and defensive considerations in this publication apply to small tactical units, such as companies and battalions, even though most of the figures in this publication use the division and the brigade combat team (BCT) echelons to illustrate points in the text. Echelon-specific field manuals and Army techniques publications address the specifics of how each tactical echelon employs these tactical concepts. FM 3-90-1 implements standardization agreement (STANAG) Allied Tactical Publication-3.2.1. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure their decisions and actions comply with applicable U.S., international, and, in some cases, host-nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See FM 27-10.) FM 3-90-1 uses joint terms where applicable. Most terms with joint or Army definitions are in both the glossary and the text. Terms for which FM 3-90-1 is the proponent publication (the authority) are marked with an asterisk (*) in the glossary. Definitions for which FM 3-90-1 is the proponent publication are boldfaced in the text. For other definitions shown in the text, the term is italicized and the number of the proponent publication follows the definition. FM 3-90-1 applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/the Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. The United States Army Combined Arms Center is the proponent for this publication. The preparing agency is the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, United States Army Combined Arms Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has changed in warfare in recent years, with America now dominant on the international scene and terrorism the new enemy. In light of these changes, the need for moral grounding in military actions is a more pressing concern than ever. When it was originally published, Moral Issues in Military Decision Making reflected the concerns posed by nuclear stalemate and the lessons of Vietnam. In that highly-praised work. Anthony Hartle outlined the essential elements of the Professional Military Ethic created for American military forces. In this new edition, he reexamines the moral foundations for America's military leadership in the post-9/11 era. Considering world affairs since the first edition - the Gulf War, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, 9/11, and the emergence of the United States as an unrivaled military power - Hartle explains how these events have raised ethical issues that differ dramatically from those of the Cold War. by the war on terrorism, homeland defense, asymmetric warfare, the proliferation of American military interventions, and the UN's role in peacekeeping operations. Using meticulously analyzed case studies - twice as many as in the first edition - he considers such moral dilemmas as torture, challenging superior officers, use of overwhelming force, and responding to fire in the presence of civilian shields. In this revision, Hartle examines further the status of professional military ethics in light of current affairs, changes in the articulation of military values, and recent research. In a new chapter on human rights, he relates moral principles directly to values embedded in the Constitution and argues that overwhelming American military power cannot succeed unless it is accompanied by the moral force of the values it seeks to protect. difficulties of applying conventional laws of war and human rights doctrine in military operations. Hartle convincingly shows that national security is as much about the preservation of moral principles as it is about the protection of America's citizens and borders. His book demonstrates that the American military must continue to observe those principles in order to be effective in its primary mission.
