Book excerpt: "Army Boys on German Soil: Our Doughboys Quelling the Mobs" by Homer Randall is a gripping tale set in the aftermath of World War I, as American soldiers find themselves stationed in Germany to restore order and stability after the armistice. The story follows a group of young American soldiers, known as the Army Boys, as they navigate the challenges of occupying a defeated nation and quelling civil unrest. Against the backdrop of a war-torn and economically devastated Germany, the Army Boys face a daunting task: maintaining peace and preventing further chaos. As they interact with the local population and witness the harsh realities of post-war life, they must demonstrate not only their military training but also their diplomacy and understanding. The novel delves into the complexities of the soldiers' experiences as they strive to fulfill their mission. It explores themes of resilience, camaraderie, and the moral dilemmas that arise when confronting a population grappling with defeat and despair. The soldiers' interactions with German civilians offer a nuanced portrayal of empathy and the human connections that transcend national boundaries. Homer Randall's storytelling vividly portrays the challenges and tensions of the post-war period, painting a realistic picture of a nation in turmoil. The narrative is filled with action, suspense, and moments of introspection as the Army Boys navigate their roles as peacekeepers and bridge-builders. "Army Boys on German Soil" is not only a gripping adventure but also a thought-provoking exploration of the aftermath of war and the complexities of occupation. Randall's narrative captures the spirit of the era and provides readers with a deeper understanding of the experiences of soldiers and civilians alike in the wake of a global conflict.

There was a sudden tightening of the military regulations, which the boys attributed in part at least to the revelations that had followed the examination of their prisoners. A rigorous system of drill and training was put in force and the Army Boys' hours of liberty were greatly curtailed in consequence. They were kept more closely to their barracks, and their visits to the town except in the line of duty became few and far between.

Download or read book Boy Soldier written by Gerhardt B. Thamm and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a 15-year-old boy I fought briefly in a war. My fight was neither noble nor heroic. I saw the horrors that no 15-year-old boy should ever see. I came into war purely by happenstance, and survived it purely by luck." Gerhardt B. Thamm grew up on his grandfather's farm in Lower Silesia, the hinterlands of Germany. In early 1945 this land, near the Czechoslovakian and Polish borders, became a battleground. The Soviets captured Lower Silesia in February, and Thamm, like many of his Hitler Youth high school classmates, was conscripted to fight on the Eastern Front until the last few days of World War II, experiencing firsthand fearsome barbarity and atrocity. Thamm's family was deported from Silesia in 1946 to West Germany. Gerhardt Thamm arrived in the United States in 1948. The 17-year-old Thamm joined the U.S. Army the same year and served more than 20 years as an enlisted man. "Maybe, just maybe, I fought in this war to escape the barbarity. Maybe I wrote this book to still the memories."

Book excerpt: This is the story of Sepp Scheibenzuber, a simple man. For most of his early life, Sepp didn’t make choices. Choices were made for him. At 13, he wanted to continue his schooling, but his parents had other ideas and soon he was toiling on the farms of Bavaria. Thereafter, he knew nothing else and so continued working on the land until he was drafted into the German Army. There was no question that he would go. He had never heard of anyone even contemplating avoiding the draft. And so within months he was fighting a war against Frenchman, a people whom he knew little about other than the Nazi’s said they were evil. And in the following years, he fought the Russians and suffered almost unendurable depravation. But somehow Sepp endured. He obeyed. He did what he was told along with millions of other Germans. It never even entered his mind that he had an alternative. All the choices were made for him, except one. He wanted to survive.
