At their home stations, combat training centers, and other locations, units have focused their limited training time on training for counterinsurgency operations. Prior to deploying, units also conduct a large-scale exercise referred to as a culminating training event. With the drawdown of forces in Iraq, the services have begun to resume training for a fuller range of offensive, defensive, and stability missions. The House report to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011 directed GAO to report on the Army's and Marine Corps' abilities to complete training requirements. GAO assessed the extent to which the services' (1) active component forces are completing training prior to the culminating training event and (2) leaders are positioned to plan and manage training as forces resume training for a fuller range of missions. GAO analyzed training requirements and unit training documentation, and interviewed headquarters and unit personnel during site visits between July 2010 and July 2011. GAO recommends that the services develop results-oriented performance metrics that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of their training management initiatives and support..."

Book excerpt: "The Army and Marine Corps both consider Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) to be a central part of future training and together have a joint MOUT Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) underway. Training facilities for military and law enforcement agencies include firing ranges, mock towns or villages, and shoot houses. Makeshift facilities for dry fire drills include engineer tape staked out on the ground and rooms in any building available. Training in Close Quarter Combat (CQC) is offered in Army and Marine Corps training courses. Training time was mostly allocated to live fire and live simulation. Team dry fire drills were often extensively practiced before team live fire, but considered as a part of the safety training required as a part of live firing. Before team live fire training, Army units usually conduct individual marksmanship training. In many cases, standards were set for individual qualification before soldiers could participate in team live fire. Live simulation was both with the multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) and Simunition. Law enforcement agencies (including Military Police) and Marines were more likely to use Simunition. Those using Simunition who also had experience with MILES preferred Simunition for live simulation training."--DITC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Iliad of the Iraq war" (Tim Weiner)--a gut-wrenching, beautiful memoir of the consequences of war on the psyche of a young man. Eat the Apple is a daring, twisted, and darkly hilarious story of American youth and masculinity in an age of continuous war. Matt Young joined the Marine Corps at age eighteen after a drunken night culminating in wrapping his car around a fire hydrant. The teenage wasteland he fled followed him to the training bases charged with making him a Marine. Matt survived the training and then not one, not two, but three deployments to Iraq, where the testosterone, danger, and stakes for him and his fellow grunts were dialed up a dozen decibels. With its kaleidoscopic array of literary forms, from interior dialogues to infographics to prose passages that read like poetry, Young's narrative powerfully mirrors the multifaceted nature of his experience. Visceral, ironic, self-lacerating, and ultimately redemptive, Young's story drops us unarmed into Marine Corps culture and lays bare the absurdism of 21st-century war, the manned-up vulnerability of those on the front lines, and the true, if often misguided, motivations that drove a young man to a life at war. Searing in its honesty, tender in its vulnerability, and brilliantly written, Eat the Apple is a modern war classic in the making and a powerful coming-of-age story that maps the insane geography of our times.

Book excerpt: " The Army and Marine Corps use live and simulation-based training to meet training goals and objectives. Service officials have noted benefits from the use of simulation-based training-both in terms of training effectiveness and in cost savings or cost avoidance. A House report accompanying the bill for the National Defense Authorization Act for 2012 mandated GAO to review the status of the military services' training programs. This report follows GAO's reports on the Navy and Air Force, and assesses (1) changes in the Army's and Marine Corps' use of simulation-based training, including efforts to integrate live and simulation-based training capabilities; and (2) the factors the Army and Marine Corps consider in determining whether to use live or simulation-based training, including the extent to which they consider performance and cost information. GAO focused on a broad cross-section of occupations (e.g., aviation, armor, artillery), and analyzed service training strategies and other documents; and conducted six site visits and interviewed service officials involved with training and training development for the selected occupations. "

Book excerpt: In conventional warfare, support forces (SF) such as military police, engineers, and medical personnel normally operate behind the front lines of a battlefield. But in Iraq and Afghanistan -- both in U.S. Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility -- there is no clear distinction between front lines and rear areas, and SF are sometimes exposed to hostile fire without help from combat arms units. This report on combat skills training for SF assessed the extent to which: (1) Army and Marine Corps SF are completing required combat skills training; (2) the services and CENTCOM have information to validate completion of required training; and (3) the services have used lessons learned to adjust combat skills training for SF. Book excerpt: Heading off to Basic Combat Training? Or, maybe you call it Boot Camp. Either way, your life is about to change. I went through Army Basic way back in 1972 after being drafted and then enlisted. Spent nine weeks at Fort Knox learning how to be a soldier and then head off to Vietnam to fight. Fortunately, I never saw combat and wound up staying in the US Army and Army Reserves for thirty years. Enjoying my retirement now. Basic can be scary. No one there to help you out except your Drill Sergeant and your Battle Buddy. Mom and Dad are far away. It is time to be a man, or a woman. Cut that safety string. Keep track of your adventures in Boot Camp and then onto Advanced Individual Training, A School or wherever your branch sends you after Basic Training. You will cherish documenting those crazy days learning how to become a soldier, sailor, airman, marine, or coast guardsman for years to come. Handy 6X9 inch, 150 page blank, lined, paperback for you to write down your thoughts, lessons, ideas, and anything else that happened during Boot Camp. Heed my advice - the same that two of my older cousins gave me before I headed out to Basic Combat Training (BCT) - Do what you are told, Be where you are supposed to be, and, Don't volunteer for anything.
