Rückblickend auf die letzten 30 Jahre der deutschen Gesellschaft lässt sich feststellen, dass Armut im langfristigen Trend zunimmt und sich dabei verfestigt. Das Vorhandensein von Armut und sozialer Ausgrenzung ist nicht kompatibel mit dem Selbstbild Deutschlands, welches sich als Wohlstandsgesellschaft versteht. Vorgefunden werden soziale Sicherungssysteme, Bildung für alle und Grundsicherungen. Doch im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte hat sich die Wahrnehmung von Armut und sozialer Ausgrenzung in Deutschland deutlich in den Medien wie auch in den Diskussionen und Maßnahmen der Politik widergespiegelt. Probleme, die sich in Deutschland beim Übergang von der Agrar- zur Industriegesellschaft zeigten, werden deshalb unter dem Begriff – soziale Frage – subsummiert. Um was es sich dabei genau handelt, wurde im Seminar „Die Sozialpädagogik und die soziale(n) Fragen der Gegenwart“ ausgiebig beleuchtet. Aus diesem Grund wird im Folgenden eine Einordnung der Thematik – Armut – in diesen Seminarkontext erfolgen (Kapitel 2). Außerdem wird das Thema in das Modul „Sozialpädagogik/Sozialmanagement I: Theorien und Methoden“ eingeordnet, für diese Verortung werden die sozialpädagogischen Dimensionen: gesellschaftlicher Kontext, Institutionen, sozialpädagogisch-professionelles Handeln und Lebenswelt der AdressatInnen, hinzugezogen. Eben diese Dimensionen sind kennzeichnend für eine Theorie der Sozialpädagogik, deshalb werden sie im dritten Kapitel zunächst genauer beschrieben, bevor die Einordnung erfolgen kann. Die darauffolgenden beiden Kapitel befassen sich mit dem Lebenslagenansatz (Kapitel 4) und dem professionalisierungstheoretischen Ansatz (Kapitel 5). Beide Theorien sind als Maßnahmen anzusehen, die sozialen Ungleichheiten entgegenwirken und Besserung bringen sollen. Im sechsten Kapitel erfolgt der Vergleich beider Theorien. Das siebte Kapitel beinhaltet das Resümee sowie einen Ausblick. Da es sich bei dieser Ausarbeitung um einen kurzen Überblick handelt, kann nicht alles, in aller Genauigkeit diskutiert werden.

Der Schwerpunkt wird hierbei auf die Soziale Arbeit sowie auf die Betrachtung und Überprüfung der Existenz von Interdisziplinarität und Netzwerkarbeit zwischen den verschiedenen zuständigen Disziplinen im Bereich der Kinder und Jugendarmut gelegt.

Die Neuformierung der Arbeitslosenhilfe und der Sozialhilfe zum so genannten „Arbeitslosengeld II“, bedeutet u. a. auch, dass verstärkte Kontrollinstanzen der Bundesagentur für Arbeit über die Annahme von den zugeteilten Arbeitsplätzen wachen. Zudem besteht die Gefahr dass eine Arbeit im Niedriglohnsektor nicht genug Geld abwirft, um eine Familie ernähren zu können. Wenn ein zugeteilter Arbeitsplatz seitens des Leistungsbeziehers nicht wahrgenommen wird, so drohen ihm wiederum Kürzungen der Leistungsbezüge und die Hilfe sinkt dann unter das Sozialhilfeniveau. Somit werden in Zukunft mehr Familien und Kinder von Armut betroffen sein und dadurch zu einem wichtigen Aspekt bei der Auseinandersetzung in der Sozialpolitik und der Sozialen Arbeit werden. Die Kinderarmut ist in erster Linie auf die Erwachsenenarmut zurückzuführen. Die Soziale Arbeit darf die Kinderarmut somit nie isoliert betrachten, sondern muss sie immer im familiären Kontext, sowie in ihrer sozialräumlichen und milieugebundenen Ausprägung sehen. Nach Margherita Zander ist es wichtig, dass sich bei der Bekämpfung der Armut in Deutschland unterschiedliche Interventionsinstanzen gegenseitig beeinflussen und bedingen. Somit sollte es eine wissenschaftliche, eine (sozial)politische und eine (sozial)pädagogische Ebene für die Bekämpfung der Armutsproblematik geben.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. Book excerpt: In September 2018 the criminal law section of the 72nd Deutscher Juristentag (DJT, “German Assembly of Jurists”) debated the question “Sentencing Guidelines vs. Free Judicial Discretion – Is German Sentencing Law in Need of Reform?” Despite the expert opinion provided by Johannes Kaspar and the accompanying scholarly commentaries, ensuing proposals for fundamental reform met with rejection. The comparative perspective was limited to the US Federal sentencing guidelines. The intention of this volume is therefore, on the one hand, to draw a more nuanced picture of Anglo-American sentencing law focusing on three legal systems (England/Wales, USA and Canada) accompanied by commentaries from a German perspective; on the other hand, we want to make the German perspective (better) known within the Anglo-American legal world by reproducing important DJT documents in English language. To ensure the widest possible distribution we opted for a bilingual open access publication.

Scholarly discussions on economic development in history, specifically those linked to industrialization or modern economic growth, have paid great attention to the formation and development of the market economy as a set of institutions able to augment people’s welfare. The role of specific nonmarket practices for promoting the economic development and welfare has been a distinct concern, typically involving discussion of the state’s economic policies. How have societies tackled those issues that the market did not? To what extent did those solutions reflect the structure of an economy? Public Goods Provision in the Early Modern Economy explores these questions by investigating efforts made for the provision of "public goods" in early modern economies from the perspective of Japanese socioeconomic history during Tokugawa era (1603–1868), and by comparing those cases with others from Europe and China’s economic history. The contributors focus on three areas of inquiry—early modern era welfare policies for the poor, infrastructure, and forest management—to provide both a unique perspective on Japanese public finance at local levels and a vantage point outside of Europe to encourage a more global view of early modern political economies that shaped subsequent modern transformations.

Book excerpt: Our usual representations of the opposition between the "civilized" and the "primitive" derive from willfully ignoring the relationship of distance our social science sets up between the observer and the observed. In fact, the author argues, the relationship between the anthropologist and his object of study is a particular instance of the relationship between knowing and doing, interpreting and using, symbolic mastery and practical masteryor between logical logic, armed with all the accumulated instruments of objectification, and the universally pre-logical logic of practice. In this, his fullest statement of a theory of practice, Bourdieu both sets out what might be involved in incorporating one's own standpoint into an investigation and develops his understanding of the powers inherent in the second member of many oppositional pairsthat is, he explicates how the practical concerns of daily life condition the transmission and functioning of social or cultural forms. The first part of the book, "Critique of Theoretical Reason," covers more general questions, such as the objectivization of the generic relationship between social scientific observers and their objects of study, the need to overcome the gulf between subjectivism and objectivism, the interplay between structure and practice (a phenomenon Bourdieu describes via his concept of the habitus), the place of the body, the manipulation of time, varieties of symbolic capital, and modes of domination. The second part of the book, "Practical Logics," develops detailed case studies based on Bourdieu's ethnographic fieldwork in Algeria. These examples touch on kinship patterns, the social construction of domestic space, social categories of perception and classification, and ritualized actions and exchanges. This book develops in full detail the theoretical positions sketched in Bourdieu's Outline of a Theory of Practice. It will be especially useful to readers seeking to grasp the subtle concepts central to Bourdieu's theory, to theorists interested in his points of departure from structuralism (especially fom Lévi-Strauss), and to critics eager to understand what role his theory gives to human agency. It also reveals Bourdieu to be an anthropological theorist of considerable originality and power.

How much do we really understand this new Germany, and how do its people understand themselves? Neil MacGregor argues that, uniquely for any European country, no coherent, overarching narrative of Germany's history can be constructed, for in Germany both geography and history have always been unstable. Its frontiers have constantly shifted. Königsberg, home to the greatest German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, is now Kaliningrad, Russia; Strasbourg, in whose cathedral Wolfgang von Geothe, Germany's greatest writer, discovered the distinctiveness of his country's art and history, now lies within the borders of France.
