Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of early childhood education has been emphasized by a large body of research that has demonstrated that children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development is significantly influenced by the quality of the education and care received from their families and in preschool. Consequently, it is important to investigate factors that pertain to the provision of a high-quality education and high-quality care for young children. This book addresses several important issues that are currently under discussion with respect to this topic. In particular, the book focuses on three topics presently under debate: the professionalization of pedagogues working in the field of early childhood education; the quality of education and care provided by families and preschools; and the promotion of children from socio-economically disadvantaged families. Providing an excellent overview of current research in Germany, this book will be useful to readers who are interested in international perspectives on early childhood education and who want to gain insight into relevant topics discussed in other countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyberbullying and online victimisation in general are high on the public agenda. As cyber technology continues to evolve, we must consider how best we can support our children and young people in enjoying the benefits that come with the online world, whilst also protecting them from harm. This book provides a timely review and analyses of the international literature on cyberbullying. Beginning with an overview of the evolution of international research to date, the chapters deal with some of the fundamental issues facing researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The authors deal with issues such as how best to define cyberbullying, what we currently know about the prevalence of the behaviour, the role of gender in cyberbullying, and alternative theoretical perspectives. Cross-national research is reviewed with the objective of highlighting the similarities across different nations whilst also emphasising the uniqueness and importance of cultural context when attempting to intervene effectively. Due to the research-evident potential for harm as a consequence of cyberbullying, it is important that we move towards appropriate coping and intervention strategies. Therefore, this book also focuses on effective coping strategies at an individual level and at a societal level, examining issues such as education and legislation in relation to cyberbullying. Furthermore, the contemporary knowledge regarding prevention and intervention is explored, with a number perspectives provided. Ultimately, this book presents a state-of-the-art review of cyberbullying knowledge in 2016 and looks to the future with recommendations for development of theory, research, practice, and policy.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1990s, new strategies concerning the role and shape of welfare states have been formulated, many of which are guided by a logic of social investment. This book maps out this new perspective and assesses both its achievements and shortcomings. In doing so, it provides a critical analysis of social investment ideas and policies and opens up for discussion many of Europe's most pressing concerns--such as an aging population, the current economic crisis, and environmental issues-- and whether social investment can provide adequate responses to these challenges.
