Book Synopsis Ghost of the Ozarks by : Brooks Blevins
Download or read book Ghost of the Ozarks written by Brooks Blevins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929, in a remote county of the Arkansas Ozarks, the gruesome murder of harmonica-playing drifter Connie Franklin and the brutal rape of his teenaged fiancée captured the attention of a nation on the cusp of the Great Depression. National press from coast to coast ran stories of the sensational exploits of night-riding moonshiners, powerful "Barons of the Hills," and a world of feudal oppression in the isolation of the rugged Ozarks. The ensuing arrest of five local men for both crimes and the confusion and superstition surrounding the trial and conviction gave Stone County a dubious and short-lived notoriety. Closely examining how the story and its regional setting were interpreted by the media, Brooks Blevins recounts the gripping events of the murder investigation and trial, where a man claiming to be the murder victim--the "Ghost" of the Ozarks--appeared to testify. Local conditions in Stone County, which had no electricity and only one long-distance telephone line, frustrated the dozen or more reporters who found their way to the rural Ozarks, and the developments following the arrests often prompted reporters' caricatures of the region: accusations of imposture and insanity, revelations of hidden pasts and assumed names, and threats of widespread violence. Locating the past squarely within the major currents of American history, Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South paints a convincing backdrop to a story that, more than 80 years later, remains riddled with mystery.

Download or read book Places of Our People written by Freda Cruse Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first 50 years of settlement in the White River Valley, between 1797 when John Lafferty first played the river waters in a keelboat to 1847 when the yellow fever, small pox and other illnesses drove many settlers out of West Tennessee saw the birth of the Ozark culture. Not unlike Jamestown, Virginia, the blending of the blacks, whites and Native Americans created a unique culture that is seen and heard in the dance, speech, music and the way the people of the Ozarks live their lives. While completing the 2009 Voices of Our People, the rich history of the people whose histories lay primarily in that first 50 years began revealing itself in the richness of Civil War stories told by the men who fought to their grandchildren to Mountain Meadows Massace in Utah. Phillips takes us on an exploration of history linking each story to someone who was born, raised or currently lives in the White River Valley.

Book Synopsis When Scotland Was Jewish by : Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman
Download or read book When Scotland Was Jewish written by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Download or read book The Armistead Family written by Virginia Armistead Garber and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search of data and incidents, relating to the Armistead family, has necessitated a great deal of reading, besides literal digging into the records of various counties and the Land Office, disciphering old tombstones, and visiting the sites of old homes and original grants. The drudgery, the weariness of it all, is forgotten, but the charm and romance of those early days linger with us, like some tender, bewitching dream, that we would fane keep fresh in the memory of those of the family, who may not have the same opportunity for the study of Virginia's Colonial history. -- Foreword.
