Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Before Armageddon The writer desires first of all to bear personal testimony to the faithfulness of the Great Revealer of truth. Some four years of my life and ministry were spent in the British Isles. A part of this time was passed in Newport, Wales, where an extended series of Sunday night addresses were delivered on the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation. Up to this time the 17th of Revelation was an unsolved enigma. My traditional teaching on this subject, like all others I had read, was utterly unsatisfactory and easily overthrown. Knowing that the addresses would eventually reach this difficult chapter, and that the hearers, who were permitted to ask questions freely, could easily overthrow any teaching on the subject with which I was familiar, I appealed to the Lord definitely for light on this important prophecy. Day after day I went to my room and laying the Bible open at the 17th of Revelation, knelt and read the chapter to the Lord and asked earnestly for light. Again and again was the promise pleaded "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Jas. 1:5. Not only in secret but at the family altar, the Lord was constantly petitioned to open up the mysteries of the prophecy. The matter became the principal theme of the household, among whom were some who were sharing the public labors. For three months persistent prayer was offered in private and with the family, sometimes amid tears, that God would open up these things to our understanding. One evening, with the prayer still unanswered, the writer started to walk for exercise to the historic village of Caerleon and return, before speaking at night. They must, obviously, be young, because their older contemporaries, with a large amount of experience of earlier conditions, will hardly have the courage to deal with the novel data. I take it that, after the conclusion of the present war, there will come an uneasy period of exhaustion and anxiety when we shall be told that those who hold military power in their hands are alone qualified to act as saviours of society. That conclusion, as I understand the matter, young idealists will strenuously oppose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The birds flitting about among the shady maples and sturdy old pines; billing and cooing; poising on some slender twig to pour forth their songs of love, which echoing through the hills, and caught up by the murmuring brooks, float away down the banks of the Ottawa, and on to its flowing, eddying stream, in one grand theme, ever telling of Time and Eternity. In such a locality, a young woman, of not more than twenty years, had thrown herself carelessly upon the grass in the shadow of the tall pines, which studded a long-drawn lawn, that sloped from a large, well-built house, of ancient architecture, to the river below.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armageddon, or the World-Movement For the convenience of w reader I have divided the discussion into chapters, 0. Which the first three treat of the character and course of the struggle, together with the relation of the war. And the last six of the contribution the con ict in Europe is making towards a better state of things. The latter, 'which appeared substantially as a series of papers in the Canadian Courier last year, dealt with the basic elements of improvement and progress discussed in the former. I have a firm belief that the convulsion now shaking the earth will be followed by a period of reconstruction - national, social, industrial, economic, and religious that will be unique in the history of mankind. I be lieve, too, that when those reconstructions are effected the world will be a more delightful realm in which to live and each country a more desirable region in which to work. Among others, from relatives and friends in Canada, whose sons volunteered in 1914, and from a sister stationed at hospitals from France to Mesopotamia. The interest inspired by the letters led to the sugges tion that she give semi-public readings in aid of War Relief. This she did from 1915 until the entry of the United States into the War. Very soon after, she met with a serious motor accident which made it impossible for her to continue her War Relief work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who Is Responsible?: Armageddon and After This little book attempts to trace out how Prussian tradition, starting with Frederick the Great, has succeeded in corrupting the Germany of to-day. At the same time, due credit is given to the collateral policy of increasing the nation's efficiency, even if the final product has been a type of organization that approximates to the orderly servitude of the beehive. The author has attempted an analysis of the character of the Kaiser. William's love of the spectacular is emphasized, and he is described as the Nero in vanity, if not in cruelty, of the twentieth century. The workings of the Mailed Fist are next discussed, and the final results of his twenty-five years of forcible-feeble diplomacy are summed up as having left Germany without a friend in the world and as having reconciled with one another many nations who hitherto had not been on friendly terms.
