Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2 In the autumn of 1867 Mr. Grote undertook to write a short account of Aristotle's striking recognition of the physical aspect of mental phenomena, to be appended to the third edition of the senior editor's work, The Senses and the Intellect'; but, on following out the indications relative to that point, he was gra dually led by his interest in the subject to elaborate a full abstract of the De Anima and the other psycho logical treatises. Several months were spent On this task, and at the end he declared that it had greatly deepened his insight into Aristotle's philosophy as a whole. He also expressed his satisfaction at having thus completed an exposition of the Psychology, fitted to stand as his contribution to that part Of Aristotle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated With Essays and Notes; Containing Essays on the Ethics of Aristotle These lectures I listened to ten years ago in Balliol College; they were the first introduction into Oxford of the study of the history of philosophy. Those who have had the privilege of hearing them Will feel, what I cannot h0pe here to convey, the sense of their great excellence and importance. I must also thank the kindness of my friend, Mr. Edward Poste, Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, whose Aristotelian learning has been of the greatest service to me, especially at the beginning of my labours; and I must conclude by Offering my thanks to my friend, Mr. James Ferrier, Professor of Moral Philosophy in the Uni versity of St. Andrews, for the profound metaphysical point of view, which in many a conversation on phi losophy, he has shown me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Aristotle, Vol. 2: Physica; De Caelo; De Generatione Et Corruptione The translation of the first two books of the P/rysr'cr for this series was originally entrusted to Mr. C. D. Robertson, Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and he had, before his untimely death, prepared a draft translation of these books, which was placed at the disposal of Mr. Hardie and freely used by him. The present translation of the first four books is, however, in the main by Mr. Hardie himself. He has received valuable help from Professors Joachim and J. A. Smith, and from Dr. J. C. Smith and Mr. Henry Barker. The last four books were translated by Mr. Gaye, who also died before his time, regretted by all students of Greek philosophy. Where the word I occurs in notes on these books, the writer is Mr. Gaye. To me has fallen the task of securing comparative uniformity - I have not tried to produce complete uniformity - between the two halves of the translation. In this I have been much helped by Mr. George Brown, m.a Lecturer in Logic in the University of Glasgow, who has kindly read the proofs throughout. At the same time I have on the basis of a study of the reported manuscript readings and of the Greek commentators adopted a good many changes of reading in the Greek text and altered the translation to suit them. All divergences from Bekker's text are men tioned in the notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Aristotle, Vol. 12: Select Fragments A translation of the whole of the fragments included by Rose would not be of much general interest, and' I have thought it best to limit this selection to three of the sections in his editions - the dialogues, the logical works, and the philosophical works. The references in the notes to this trans lation are to the page and line of Rose's Teubner edition. At the same time I have included many other passages which have been with probability assigned to Aristotle by the scholars named above and others. I must in particular express my indebtedness to Dr. R. Walzer, who has not only published a useful edition of some of the fragments, but has called my attention to others which would otherwise have escaped my notice, and has lent me some useful books and articles. It is not intended to make any further addition to the Oxford Translation of Aristotle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
